Yeah Fanning has on makeup but not 50 pounds of it. Just because Mary Jan is goregous in the comics, she doesn't have to be gorgeous in the film. I'm sure MJ's looks were not the only thing Stan Lee and the other writers were trying to make define MJ's character in the comics.
And also, whether or not Robbie resembles certain features from various versions of Watson, that doesn't mean she's an eligible choice. I know it's just a suggestion, but you guys can at least think a little bit past looks. It's obvious with Emma Stone and Shailene Woodley they're going for the young, cute type of girls for Pete's love interests in this franchise. Simple as that...which is why I picked Fanning. No offense once again, but the choices you guys are picking look like 40 year old models and have gallons of make up on.

Agreed, A is better for this franchise. B is too similar to both Gwen Stacy and Dunst from the Raimi films (despite her occupation). There needs to be more contrast. Sweet "girl next door" has already been done too many times.

Wow, you guys are making a big deal out of having a super model for MJ. Whether or not the girl next door has been used so many times or not, it's obvious that's what Marc Webb and Co are looking for. I choose cute but also confident MJ > super model who is 5 inches taller than Garfield. MJ doesn't have to be smart, she can be confident like in TSSM, but I can see Garfield's Pete having better chemistry with a girl next door MJ rather than a runway model.

I'm not even going to defend myself against one of the previous posts. Completely offensive.

If Shailene does come back, I hope they take more of a 616 route with the character. Hot, sassy, sarcastic, vivacious, tough party girl with a (later revealed) heart of gold, rather than the wholesome, intelligent, 'wears her heart on her sleeve' ultimate version of the character. 616 offers more contrast from Gwen Stacy (who clearly already has some Ultimate MJ in her) and more room for character development with the death of Gwen Stacy arc.

Even some of her close friends: Flash Thompson- has the looks and the brawn. Harry Osborn- Filthy rich and of a high social stature. But for some inexplicable reason, the girl who can have everything chose to be with Peter Parker. A slightly above average looking geek struggling to make ends meet, who can be quite cold and secretive, and who constantly disappears and blows everyone off because he feels as though he has this strong moral obligation. The mystery behind why this goddess is so drawn to Peter Parker (who quite frankly to the rest of the world is nothing special) is one of the better aspects of their relationship, and actually adds to the character’s complexity.

I think I'm a little tired of the 'girl next door' thing as well. I mean if there's one thing that I'm tired of is the girl who consantly needs to be saved. And unfortunatly that seems to be the ingenue cute type of girl. When it comes to heroes so often the girl is helpless, or needs to be saved in some way. I want to see why MJ is Peter's equal, not why she is the helpless girl next door.

I loved when Erica Durance turned up on Smallville as Lois Lane to contrast with Lana Lang. This was a woman who wasn't defined by the man she was dating. She wasn't reliant on a guy and had her own life and personality, etc. I think that might be one of the reasons people liked and connected to Mary Jane. She was a free spirit. She was confident in her own skin and that was the most important thing. It made an interesting contrast to Peter's scientist with a big responsibility situation. I think I am looking forward to seeing a confident independent MJ, whatever they decide to do.

Thanks. If this was a conversation about Gwen, Betty, Liz, or Debra it would be different, but looks and sexual attraction do play a big part in her character in the 616 universe- something that has yet to be tapped into on the big screen.

I won't deny that Margot has a distinct look for the part of MJ but I'm not sure she'd be cast. I think they're looking for a younger actress to play MJ. I'm not sure of Margot's age but she doesn't look like she could pull off a young twenties MJ nor mid-twenties, imo.

I think it's just the makeup too. Sometimes she really cakes it on. She's the perfect age (Younger than Emma), and by the time MJ is introduced (film 3 or 4) the characters will be older.

It's dose not matter who she is, it's important how MJ should look in movie and it's possible to do that. But it's easier to cast ugly or average girl for iconic character who is known for her look and call her Ultimate
