Sales dont equal quality. I think weve had this discussion before.;)

And that's not my point. Whether you agree or disagree that Bendis has quality in his books, he's still the top seller in the comic book industry.

The opinion on these boards are a minority, believe it or not. And whether you're upset because he "killed" your favorite character, doesn't write dialogue to the "standard" that you prefer, or doesn't write story arc "fast" enough for your tastes...then you can dislike him until the cows come home.

But you can't deny that he's the top...selling...writer...in the industry. I'm not talking about quality. I'm talking about popularity.

Because the more and more Bendis "hate" threads that get made the more and more people begin to look like they're hateful and jealous.

Bendis is a top seller is due to the fact all his career of writing superheroes at Marvel he's been given top characters like Spider-man or like New Avengers throw the most popular heroes together in one book while adding his personal favorites.

It's a no-brainer, New Avengers was gonna be a success. Add a hot artist and all of Marvel's promotional power and there ya go!

Plus Daredevil written by Bendis was not a superhero comic, it was a crime noir saga about a guy in red tights. Which works for DD since Frank Miller reinvisioned him.

He wasn't given New Avengers when he walked in the door at Marvel. I don't recall his first works at Marvel because I didn't get back into comics until 2002, he had already been in Marvel for a while.

The only three books I knew that he wrote then were Ultimate Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Powers. Ultimate Spider-Man was a new reboot of Spidey and there was always a chance that it could have flopped. Just because it says Spider-Man on it doesn't mean that it's going to sell. And when the book started, I'm positive, that Bendis wasn't exactly a big name just yet.

And from what I recall people never really started having a problem with Bendis' writing and his work too much until Avengers Disassembled.

Like I said. If you don't like the guy because he killed your favorite character. Fine. You're allowed to do that. If you don't like him for whatever reason it is...that's your opinion and feeling.

But the guy is the top writer at Marvel, and top seller, regardless of what characters and what books he's given. If he were writing New Warriors instead of New Avengers I can bet you that New Warriors would be in the top ten and not the Avengers.

You can't deny that he's a top seller. I'm not saying that's what makes him good. I'm just saying you can't deny his popularity in the comic book industry these days whether you dislike or not. He's got the longest lines at the Comic Con's. Obviously he must be doing SOME THINGS right.

Everybody is allowed to share their opinion but when you see a "Bendis teh Suck" thread popping up in the Marvel forums every week it REALLY starts to get old. And basically all the comic book fans look like who hate on Bendis are a bunch of jealous little children who wished they could have the opportunity that he has. And then some comic fans really wonder why they get called a "fanboy"?

Not true.
Hype may sell in the short term but NA has been a consistant seller for a while now.

Evidence?

The clone saga, spideys sales fell spectacularly.
The bats and supes books up until recent years have had middling sales.
The X line, being an X book used to guarantee sales but fans got wise to it and stopped.
The new series of nick furys howling commandoes, was hyped heavily with a trailer in many many books, fans ignored it upon release because of its shoddy quality.

Comic fans will buy into hype in the short term and many like to give new things a try but they are not stupid enough to be consistantly fooled like you're theory suggests.

Comic fans are smart, comic fans learn, the number of intelligent rational fans out numbers the collectors and completists (other wise the top ten would be filled with the major superheroes and all minis featuring them would sell a lot better than they do).

And DD was a superhero comic. A 'superhero comic' is not a description of writing style but a description of the protagonist. If the main character is in tights and has powers its a superhero comic. The syle a comic is written in doesn't stop this (ie the green latern is a sci fi but it's still a superhero comic).

Wow. I gotta admit, the man has a point.

Here's the thing I like Bendis when he's writing stuff like Torso or DD, it fits his style of writing. Now heres the thing he's great for finite stories or no action books, but when your writing a book like Avengers, 12 issues to tell a story or get the whole freaking overhyped team together is a bit to much.

I get that he's trying to forge a new direction for Avengers, but it's piss poor superheroics and total writing for the trade crap. DD can take six issues to do something halfway exciting it's a more cerebral book. DD and Powers are less superhero and more talking heads anyway.

Captain America,Ironman and the rest of the Avengers whomever they maybe isn't a book about guys and girls in tights sitting around disscussing 'NewYork pizza vs Chicago Pizza' or whatever Bendisized chatter comes out there mouth.

Avengers is Big Bang end of the world stuff! Red Skull using the cosmic cube to reshape the world, Ultron slaughtering whole countries (on panel mind you..) Kang sending in a fleet of his soldiers to annex the earth! Thor putting the smack down on a legion of other worldly monsters! hell I'll take Luke Cage and Sentry putting the hurting on the wrecking crew.

If I'm gonna pay damn near $4.00 dollars a pop for 22 pages of comics, give me my money's worth. Even Warren Ellis figured that much out, NextWave might have it's flaws, but at least I know in 22 pages I'm gonna get a full plate of steak&potatoes comics versus Bendis' chickpeas&spinach salad.

I really missed why Bendis sucks and I thought this thread would clarify it.

Anyone want to give a noob a little "On the last Superhero Hype....." synopsis?

Once upon a time, Bendis was a well liked writer who wrote great little books like Alias, Powers, and a magnificent Run on Daredevil. While he was doing his business on these fringe of the Marvel universe and indie books, people liked him. Then he took over Avengers. He was gonna shake things up in an exciting and new arc called Avengers Disassembled. Then he killed off Hawkeye and made Wanda crazy. It was all downhill after that. Now theres a very vocal minorty of fans that want his head, versus a slightly fanatical group of worshipers of his work. It has engulfed the Hype in a civil war for the past, what? Two years? Yeah. THese are the days of our lives.

Thank you. I had skimmed that article but still did not see the big deal. But now I know...And knowing is half the battle!

His point about Bendis' poor dialogue writing skills were dead on, I have always said that his dialogue is choppy and doesn't make sense...however, this whole thread and article is kinda pointless.

I'm sorry, but Avengers is selling well because of Spidey and Wolverine. Let's see Bendis keep his sales figures up with a standard Avengers team...oh, wait, he killed them all. NM.
