Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

*Multiple sources are saying King of the Monsters is spectacular, brilliant and that reactions are comparable to Infinity War. Imagine being a Fox exec and offering the Directorial gig for Dark Phoenix to the wrong X-men writer.
It'll probably be the typical Godzilla movie with a plethora of cardboard human characters,

But the effects look inmensely superior to Dark Phoenix, for sure.

You're correct about the stakes. Apocalypse needed to feel like an ultimate threat, which doesn't work at all in the 80's. The story momentum following DOFP was clear. Surely it makes sense to have Apocalypse rise directly as a result of the time travel and not because Moira moved a carpet. An OT 'Apocalypse' could have also seeded a lot of their planned future projects also: Introducing Jean and Scott's young son ahead of Deadpool 2, or some of the kids from 'New Mutants'. You could even elaborate on alternate universes ahead of 'Logan', seeing as Wolverine has experienced two realities at this point. Ultimately I can only think of one factor in favour of another prequel, and that was who was bound by contract. It was cheaper, basically.
The movie/concept of Apocalypse would have worked way better this way. Sigh... Even if they wanted a new cast to start fresh, it goes without saying that none of them got anything to do in the movie. So really, what was the point? Besides the 80s aesthetic which was really just window dressing

For me the problems with Apocalypse come down to the writing more than anything else.

Off topic but in episode seven of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Harvey mentions Jean Grey/ Dark Phoenix to Sabrina. You think this might help the movie come June? Lol
Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle makes jokes using Magneto from time to time.

But they needed to feature more James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender because they are just so awesome...
Thanks to them X-Men Apocalypse made $550m; without them, the movie would have just made 150m worldwide.

I agree Apocalypse was a bad idea when he was facing a load of rookie teens.

Dark Phoenix (again) is also a bad idea. They should have done a Sinister film following up on the clues at the end of Apocalypse.

It’s all so badly planned.

I’ve seen reports saying Dark Phoenix is gonna have the worst opening weekend of the franchise.

This is in reference to Godzilla King of the Monsters' director Michael Dougherty the writer of X2 (still the BEST X-men movie), who went on to direct Trick 'r Treat. Yes he also wrote Superman Returns, though "Certified Fresh," it's a movie not a lot of fans loved. He also has a "story by" credit on Apocalypse.

In a perfect world Fox should've recruited a director that was new to the franchise, seeing as they want to separate themselves from the previous middling movie in the franchise, Apocalypse, and are marketing Dark Phoenix as a "unique" film, different from the X-men films that came before it. But between Dougherty and Kinberg the former definitely has the better writing credits and instills in me confidence in the film.

It's kinda sad that another Godzilla film is going to be released a week before an X-men film and will eat into its box office. 2014's Godzilla with Olsen and Taylor-Johnson earned more than DOFP on their respective opening weekends ($93Mil vs. $90Mil). DOFP only earned more in the long run because its the better movie (a feat Dark Phoenix has a low chance of repeating). All because Kinberg didn't plan out his reshoot schedule and then saying they didn't want to go head-to-head with "four-quadrant" movie The Nutcracker. Now they're sandwiched between Godzilla and MiB (though I have my doubts about the latter) in a very busy summer season.

Yeah I would have enjoyed Apocalypse better if the original cast was there. As of matter of fact I would have liked to see Sinister make his debut Apocalypse tells him he needs horsemen and Sinister replies “I know where you can get them” thus leading to Apocalypse attacking the mansion and kidnapping Xavier, Angel, Storm, Psylocke turning them into his horsemen.

Psylocke, Gambit, Bishop would be the new teammates, Iceman and Kitty would not be in my movie they are together and have moved on.

The team would be Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue, Jean, Gambit, Colossus, Beast, Bishop going up against their mind controlled teammates.

I also would have Cable ft. (Who reveals he is the son of Jean/Scott and from a future ruled by Apocalypse because of their actions in DOFP).

The plot would be Sinister and Apocalypse come up with the legacy virus that’s wipes out half of the population and only the strong survives would live in Apocalypse’s new world order. The horsemen go around the world taking military bases, etc. The X-Men would enlist the help of Magneto to stop Apocalypse (who dies in the final fight). He lives on Genosha a mutant haven, with his Acolytes: Sunfire, Avalanche, Quicksilver, Blink. Apocalypse attacks Genosha, kills a handful of mutants.

Jean would battle Xavier and has a Phoenix moment to take him out. The fight scenes would be epic as hell!!! And Magento rips Apocalypse’s to shred just like the comics.

Going out with a whimper!

But this is to be expected. The films have been making less and less money.
but why?????
we have the awesome and mindblowing Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender on this movie! this should be doing 800m or more! ughhhhhh. Damm, world!! why dont you go to the theatres to watch these x-men movies with Magneto and Mystique???? why?? :argh:

because they lost singer and audiences like Hugh Jackman and his usual co-stars?

I was trying to watch a clip of Lawrence and McAvoy in Days of Future Past the other day. It's the scene where Magneto's raising the stadium; there's something about them two that's not quite right to me. Idk, as a fan, there's just something odd I can't quite pinpoint. The original cast really saved it for me.

I'm ready for a final trailer. I don't want to see any more becuase I already feel like I know the movie, but I want them to take the Apocalypse approach and just show what they have to show to get butts in seats. My feeling is the movie will be good, not great. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Kinberg is only directing because he's a producer already and wormed his way into the role. There is no-one who could look at his resume and think he's the guy for the job. He just has friends in the right places.

Honestly the FoX-Men movies haven’t changed the game. When Marvel came out with Avengers it was a game changer, they showed us you can do a team up movie and let everyone shine. At first I was worried it was going to be an Iron man and friends movie but it wasn’t and the MCU has continued to deliver good movies after that (some may differ). Fox could had delivered their own mutant cinematic universe; they could have done new mutants; x-factor; freedom force with Rebecca’s Mystique as the lead character out of Magneto’s shadow & these movies could have culminated into the age of Apocalypse event movie. Instead these movies have stuck to the same formula; them vs Magneto in some capacity, certain characters get no development or not much to do and just there for CGI a sequence. It’s like Fox was scared to take these characters in a new direction for fear of public backlash when in fact that’s what we want! The X-Men roster is forever changing so if certain characters were to move on from the team or a actor didn’t want to come back then that’s fine replace him/her with another character; I’ve been waiting years to see Gambit flirt with Rogue (and never got it). I wanted Rogue to kick ass but she never did. For X-Men to have been around 20 years they should be the reigning champs at the box office but unfortunately the MCU has dethroned them and now studios are looking at their movies as examples on how to do these characters justice. Even WB woke up after 2.5 flops (I personally liked Suicide Squad) and figured out that they need to take a different approach and hired directors and writers with a clear vision to tell these stories and so far they’re three for three now in terms of movies. They didn’t need to stop at TLS, they could’ve done DOFP as X4, and kept the overall plot the same with some tweaks. The audience would have learned that Mystique was a pupil of Xavier’s that broke away from Charles when human and mutant relations got worst, she left to join Magneto (who also left the mansion). Charles would still be going through depression from his school failing and the lost of his two friends. We would’ve been introduced to a younger version of Beast and Forge, together them along with Logan/Charles would try to stop Mystique from killing Trask. From there kept the same happy ending with Jean Scott alive. no need for a First Class film or Apocalypse because that would’ve been enough of Xavier’s past we only needed to see and they could have move forward from there with the OT cast. Instead we are getting another prequel movie that a lot of ppl aren’t excited for apparently.

Awesome pic

In Dark Phoenix, the island is Magneto’s mutant paradise – a lush, green haven that he’s built upon using metal junk he’s summoned from the sea. In Jean Grey's hour of need, this is where she finds Erik Lehnsherr looking for some much-needed advice.

Speaking to Empire in the upcoming June issue, on sale April 18, director Simon Kinberg revealed that he’s long wanted to introduce Genosha to the X-Men movies. “Genosha is something that I’ve always been fascinated by,” he said. “It’s sort of Oz for mutants. As a Jew, its parallels to Israel and the notion of the promised land intrigued me even as a kid. I was looking in previous X-Men movies for a way to incorporate it. It was something I thought about for Apocalypse, but then went in a very different direction.”
