Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

they should put the trailer on the Internet 1 hour before being shown in the program

Hmmm...The long 3/4 length jacket imagery reminds me of Grant Morrison’s New X-men run. I really, really hope Cyclops has more lines than Mystique in the trailer tonite...that "motion" poster doesn't give me much hope, Mystique had two lines to Cyclops' 0.

And the Grace Randolph hourly updates (who I didn’t know, and didn’t want to know about, until one of you guys constantly keep talking about her when Apocalypse came out) are pointless. Is Grace Randolph in the movie and Cyclops isn't?

So I'd have to stay up and watch James Corden to see this?

Nah, I won't be doing that.

Well folks, we have our first official synopsis from the official site.

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Fox had to have been behind the leak. They put togeher a damn good trailer and have been showing it at expos for months and tonight theyre releasing he ame one with added scenes and completed FX. It was an industry Expo jn Russia of all places, you think the ones with access to that sort of place in that sort of career would risk it?
I don't know man, they got pretty pissed when the Apocalypse trailer from Comic-Con was leaked.

Anyway, ugh yeah the hype is buggy all around. I've been having trouble loading this page since yesterday.

Anyway, ugh the hype is buggy as hell. My posts dissappearing, the page taking ages to load, the quotes not showing up. So frustrating!

"During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable."

I'm sorry...I thought as seen in the last movie, the Phoenix was already inside Jean? (Jean let gooooo).

"...but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy."

LOL! This sounds so bad. Looking forward to the trailer though.

It pains me to say this but i have never been this disinterested in an X-Men movie. Is it too late to cancel this? I don't want Marvel to get discouraged to use the best superhero team ever because of the failure of Fox.

They're making the Eternals so I'm sure they'll be up for X-Men, regardless of the state it's in when they get it. The worst case scenario is probably just a rest for a few years. Hopefully DoFP is as good as possible though so it's easier to get people excited for the future rather than having a big rebuilding job.

I like the poster. Still not a fan of Sophie's Jean Grey, but the visual is great.

Obviously it's hard to tell given the quality and it all being in friggin' Russian, but man, I'm really digging what we're seeing in the leak there. Can't wait to see the real deal pretty soon.

Definitely looks a little more DoFP, tonally, than Apocalypse, but just with the bigger/more out-there conceptual stuff Apocalypse had. Works for me. Looks very "Bryan" too, which I love. Still a little apprehensive about Kinberg, first directorial effort and all (not sure we count Fantastic Four - I can't even recall what went down there - was Kinberg actually in the director's chair after Trank's meltdown, or more just rewriting it for someone else to shoot?), but was sort of in "benefit of the doubt mode" already, and this is really setting me at ease even being so little to go on.

Still ****ing bummed about goddamn Zimmer (why, baby Jebus, whyyyy? :loco: Ottman's stuff is lightyears ahead basically every superhero score out there these days), but whatever. Bring it on.

I'd love for this to really go out with a bang. Singer's X-Men flicks honestly really mean a lot to me, been feeling that more and more lately. Less "disposable" than a lot of the stuff we're getting now I guess. X1 as a 14 year old was memorable as ****, and X2 was probably my greatest theater experience ever, group of friends went just as nuts over it. And, like, hell, much as I love The Winter Soldier, DoFP took the cake that year for me hands-down.

Even Apocalypse, while easily the worst of the Singer flicks (and quite significantly so), I got a kick out of for the most part, warts & all. Actually dug Isaac-Apocalypse moderately, and all the biblical-mutant-history schtick was pretty amusing. Still like a 7/10 genre movie basically.

Really rooting for Kinberg here. Like, we don't have a lot of precedent to go on with him, but being as involved with First Class & DoFP as he was (I wouldn't even discount Apocalypse, much as people seem to loathe it) I do kinda think maybe he has it in him to deliver something really good.

Great! There are things to comment on before the trailer tonight to hold me over until then.

The poster is obviously very beautiful and stands out in an environment of pretty bad posters these days. It looks especially good as a banner, even if the "K" in "Dark" blends in a little too much with the background colours. The jacket is an odd choice in terms of the silhouette it gives her. Not necessarily bad, but I'm someone who thinks her Phoenix costume is one of the best in superhero comics. I do like the title print for Dark Phoenix since it looks classy and serious, but again, I would have loved to see the Phoenix symbol incorporated somehow. While the X looks great in the background, I'm worried that we haven't seen any Phoenix imagery whatsoever. I've been waiting since the end of X2 to see the Phoenix raptor on screen. The Phoenix isn't just fire. But the cosmic orientation of a lot of the promo materials gives me hope.

It's great to have an official synopsis too. It hits most of the major elements of the Phoenix story but obviously in super condensed fashion.

"In Dark Phoenix, the X-men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey"

Yeah, this is more or less how the Dark Phoenix Saga is marketed as well.

"During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force"

This is pretty comic accurate. Pre-retcon, Jean was exposed to cosmic radiation but the retcon changed it to the Phoenix Force. Will the movie ever clarify what the "mysterious cosmic force" is? I doubt it, but I also don't think it needs to. Is this a continuity error with Apocalypse in which Jean manifested ultra powerful Phoenix powers without a cosmic force?

"Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable"

Another reference to a vague force. But I'm starting to get worried here. Jean was hospitalized at first after becoming Phoenix, but there's a good 30+ issues of Jean being Phoenix with no problems. She saves the entire universe actually. And she gains a lot of independence and confidence before being manipulated by the Hellfire Club. It is ultra super duper important that Jean's "instability" is the fault of forces (i.e. powerful men in the Hellfire Club) trying to control her.

"Wrestling with this new entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain"

Hmm... entity. Maybe we will get an explanation of the Phoenix Force? Same complaint that we are skipping Jean's independence and confidence. In the comics, Jean unknowingly gave herself telepathic blocks to keep the Phoenix power manageable. This speaks to Jean as a competent and responsible human. But I guess she'll never be able to control her powers in the movie....

"With Jean spiralling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-men together"

This is well representative of the Dark Phoenix Saga. Jean spirals out of control AFTER being manipulated by Mastermind though. But Dark Phoenix does put the X-men in a moral conundrum and threatens their stability as a team (and the universe!).

"Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite - not only to save Jean's soul, but save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy"

This is kind of an assemblage of DPS elements. I'm fine with changing details if the spirit of the story is maintained. That has yet to be determined, but these specific changes don't concern me too much. The X-men in the comics did feel like a family. I could provide scan after scan of really charming family moments between the X-men from Giant Size #1 to the DPS. Xavier, Raven, Beast, and Magneto feel like a family in the movies, but that's not the family I'm interest in seeing at all. The mention of "aliens" here feels random and is intentionally vague. Aliens never want to weaponize Phoenix in the comics -- the Shi'ar are the ones that are most afraid of it. It's a shame we're not going to have a moment in which the X-men think they have saved Jean through Xavier's telepathic blocks, only to have Lilandra and the Shi'ar shatter the peace in an attempt to execute Jean. It's moments like that that make the story really feel like an epic saga. Also, Jean has a lot of agency in her fate!

The synopsis isn't giving us everything so I'm hoping there are both stunning surprises and smaller character moments.

Agreed Ax. Out of all Marvel movies, the X-Men mean the most to me, by far. I'm holding out hope here, because Kinberg was involved with the previous Phoenix botch, which means to me that he knows what the fans have problems with, and genuinely wants to right the wrongs he participated in.

X3 was the only offensively bad X-Men film, Wolverine Origins can be written off, and has been. But you don't ruin the Phoenix and get away clean. Apocalypse wasn't good, but it was fun and had it's moments. It's very fluffy, especially for these films, and still very watchable. Hell, if it came out in 2003, it would have been very well received I imagine!

Kinberg will hopefully find the balance between the epic scope and precision of DOFP, with the outlandish fun of Apocalypse, while serving some justice to the Phoenix storyline, even if by not killing Cyclops within the first freaking 10 minutes... he's starting off on the RIGHT foot.

Now I feel like a bad X Men fan for not liking the poster all that much. :nrv::gibbs:

I like the general idea, especially the space background and the X motif, but I wish Jean was in a different pose - something more comic-book Phoenix, still in the shadow but with a hint of costume and the flames.

This definitely doesn't make you a bad X-men fan haha

Haha, I must care about posters way less than you guys. :oldrazz: It looks just fine, but ehh. Just a poster.

Pretty hyped to hear the actual trailer dialogue though. Already love the visual look of it, very DoFP, got a few moments of "whoa, X2 vibes!" throughout too.

Is Sigel cinematographer on this?

i really do like the synopsis about this movie, so now I'm starting to think is this "mysterious cosmic force" possibly fleeing from something or someone and seeks refuge in Jean? I do wonder if Chastain's character and these aliens are the ones after this cosmic force and do they seek to harness the power of this force for their own means. So I can see Chastain manipulating Jean to give into the power and use her for destructive purposes. So the scenes where Charles says he doesn't know what she is becoming and the scene with Jean in the infirmary(in the leak trailer) makes me believe that maybe she is possessed by this cosmic force which may be responsible for Jean reliving her traumatic childhood, possibly breaking down the psychic barriers (I'm assuming Charles put in her mind). This is all speculation on my part, but I can't wait to the see the official trailer tonight!!!

I really like Apocalypse (8-/10, better than x1 and

No, Fiore (Avatar)

There’s a Dark Phoenix panel next Friday at NYCC

Of course I have Sat/Sun tickets lol

I really don’t think Olivia Munn is even in this. Her name is omitted from the cast list, surely she would’ve been listed there.

Also I love Storm's new look!!! That hairstyle is so Halle Berry in the early 90s....
