Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

I just watched the trailer. This movie doesn't look like a dumpster fire. But it doesn't look amazing either. It looks...decent. The impression this gives me is it will likely be better than X-Men: Apocalypse, but not First Class or Days of Future Past quality. I do think they do a good job at making the Phoenix feel dangerous and unpredictable in the trailer. But, this trailer lacks a WOW moment. So it leaves no lingering impression.
That’s what I’ve been thinking. I feel like this won’t be received as badly as Last Stand or Apocalypse. I can see this even being in the 75-80% rotten range. It seems like this will be a good well acted film but won’t get to the heights of DoFP, X2, First Class and Logan. Which is ok I guess. I would love for a massive send off but I’d be happy with it being a good decent film that doesn’t end the franchise on a sour note.

Funny part is that there were stuff that people said needed to be done again for the phoenix story. i was one of those who argued they couldn't redo that stuff again since TLS already did it but others said you had to do that stuff again for the sake of the phoenix story and giving a who cares if TLS already did it.

Now people are arguing the opposite.
I suppose it's about taking the things you can't leave out but filming it in a way that doesn't look too much like what's already been seen? I guess there's a thin line between homage and rehash.

Oh Selene, you poor thing. What have they done to you?

Scream at these movies being unable to have consistency when it comes to Phoenix. Is it a personality within Jean or a force she meets in space? If it’s the latter, then why is she exhibiting powers at the end of Apocalypse?

I'm pretty sure it's still the former. Haven't seen direct confirmation, but from early interviews Kinberg speaks as though it's still just a split personality.

I think this trailer makes it fairly apparent they're still running with split personality.

Really liked the trailer and good song choice.

And that's where I'll leave that before leaving because Odin knows how much back and forth probably will- and may already be- going on here.

That’s what I thought but it’s completely contradicted in the synopsis they released yesterday.

IDK, I always liked that TLS made the Phoenix powers an actual part of Jean - she is the next stage in evolution. Not someone who was just a bystander while a cosmic power took her body or became her. I would prefer it if this version was the same, that the space accident just causes her loss of control and maybe the mental barriers that hide the truth of her parents death to be completely broken.

X3 had the best trailers.

Anyway a good editor could easily come up witha 2 minute trailer from a bad film.

That stuff is all in each to everyones own visual representation really.

Which is exactly why you get people on the "this is too much like TLS" line of thought and others who see it as a necessary part of telling the story. I guess it'll all depend on the final product. I'm excited but cautious - that's all.

That doesn't need to be a scoop at all. They were doing re-shoots until a few days ago, of course the big moments aren't done and presentable yet.

Just read it. I see what you mean. Have to wonder if it could be more than confusing wording.

Maybe in this version the powers are her's, but the entity upgrades them and changes her personality? My guess is her parents die accidentally when her powers start manifesting, Xavier blocks that from her memory, the entity latches onto Jean and she finds out what happened.

Well if there is otherworldly then it would have to be in the space mission. Maybe Chastain could even be a manifestation of the Dark Phoenix in Jean, whether it be alien or another personality. Sort of like that 90's TAS episode where Xavier goes evil and develops another personality or like a female Onslaught.

You mean, that Chastain is a personification of the actual Dark Phoenix? That could be interesting and could explain their CGI shoot together if she is eventually fighting with herself.

I mean the ending of Apocalypse makes no sense if the Phoenix isn't already a part of Jean.

The interview stated Chastain is interested in Jeans power because Agent "Smith" wants to use it for her own agenda (i guess back on her alien world).

The leaks from the test screening that the spaceshuttle flies off and smashed into an alien world which pees them off seem inaccurate at this point.

Just curious as I haven't kept up with the comics, do we ever see the Phoenix represented in this way? I know the entity has inhabited other hosts, but has it ever presented itself in its own form?

If Dark Phoenix is a split personality like X3, then it's pretty much just a rehash of The Last Stand and they could have made this second attempt of the DP Saga more faithful to the comics with a cosmic entity. I guess Feige will get a chance to distinguish his own Dark Phoenix movie when he makes it in 10 years.

Personally, I wasn't very impressed with the trailer, and if it's going to be the swan song of Fox's X-Men, it probably won't be that great of a send off.

Well, this trailer leaves a feeling of doubt.
Most people are not sure what's going to be great or bad, this for me is good, apocalypse for example when the first trailer was released most people were already sure that something was going to be bad, so much that interest in the movie fell when it was released the second trailer, already the trailer for dark phoenix for not showing almost anything about the main things of the film, such as aliens, the character of chastain, jean turned into fenix, action scenes, leaves people in a state of doubt only and waiting for more news ... if the second trailer has all this we'll be fine.

I think only as the big fire-bird raptor. It never had a humanoid physical form other then Jean, when they retconned the Dark Phoenix saga to remove the blame of the genocide it commits from Jean to the actual cosmic force.

I don't see that as true. A mental disability isn't what I would call the next step in evolution (that didn't work for Shane Black either. lol). Plus making the Phoenix a different personality doesn't really give Jean any agency either. She's still at the mercy of the Phoenix in both cases. It also means the Phoenix isn't a seperste character and eliminates the cosmic elements of the story.

But she wasn't mentally unstable as a part of her evolution. It was when Professor X separated that part of her mind with his mental blocks that created a rift in her personality and the imbalance.

This is where X3 messed things up. The ending of X2 hints that Jean is in fact the next step in evolution, unfortunately The Last Stand dropped the ball in exploring that idea.
