The only thing I liked about it was Magneto calling Xavier out on his speechifying but you don't get bonus points if you still do it anyway.

Yeah so they changed it so that the Phoenix took on Jean's form whilst Jean was safely cocooned under the Hudson until the Fantastic Four fished her out. Kinda absolved her from any punishment for the Phoenix's actions when it went all dark and crazy. I think ever since though, the Phoenix has been a "force" that inhabits other beings. I agree that the various tweaks do give a lot of room for interpretation. For me, the issue with the split personality is that it doesn't give the same sense of danger as a body snatching cosmic entity who can destroy entire galaxies. I liked that Jean was (seemingly) a prisoner in her body whilst this separate being overpowered and took control.

I wonder if they'll retcon it so that no one actually sees the Phoenix entity enter Jean and so Xavier misdiagnoses the split personality disorder and puts the blocks in place. In TLS Xavier said the other personality called itself "Phoenix"... maybe in TLS it was always the entity, but no one knew.

One of the few things I loved about TLS was the reveal that wise, fatherly Xavier had mucked around with Jean's mind and created a monster. His cruel dismissal of Logan for questioning his methods was wonderful. And one of the few things I loved about Apocalypse was the reveal that, in this time line, Xavier was going to do things the right way. "Release your power!" No psychic blocks for you, young lady!

From the trailer it seems like the psychic blocks are back and the Phoenix force is a separate alien entity, despite having made an appearance in the last film. I would have preferred to see the story continue from what was teased in Apocalypse.

I understand why people are not that hyped. After all 90% of the trailer is mutants in casual clothing, talking and staring. Not exactly edge of the seat stuff.

In trailer 2 I want to see more shots of their suits whilst in action. More of the space rescue scene. A quicksilver scene tease. Power displays by Cyclops and Storm. The inbound alien invasion. And the Phoneix raptor. More more more!

It was a good trailer. While I'm far more excited for X-men in the MCU I really hope this is a good movie, I really want Fox's X-men to go out on a high note. For all it's ups and downs they have plenty of enjoyable films and great moments. I remember how excited I was when I found out about the first movie in a comic book advertisement like a year before the film released. I pretty much watched those first two film on loop for years. It's the end of an era ad I just hope for a good ending.

It is looking to be an interesting take on the Dark Phoenix saga.

For me I am interested in seeing how this weaves together as the film progresses. I suspect the pacing at the start will have a slow build up and then picks up pace.

Maybe in this version the powers are her's, but the entity upgrades them and changes her personality? My guess is her parents die accidentally when her powers start manifesting, Xavier blocks that from her memory, the entity latches onto Jean and she finds out what happened.

That's what I assumed from what's been said so far. Because jean has multiple and extreme powers, plus guilt of her harming people when her powers first started. That can mess anyone's mind up. So Charles didn't block her powers like in TLS, but rather blocked the traumatic memories.

Then in space, the Phoenix is attracted to jean because of her extreme power and posses her (I assume the energy being sucked into her). The entity corrupts her mind even more and breaks the barriers Charles gave her.

What I learned in my 4 years of psychology classes, People dont realize that many people have the POTENTIAL for mental illness (which is why people say it can be genetic). Most won't develop it until something triggers it such as a traumatic event. The event in this case? Saving the team which pushes her mind and body to the brink. That allows the Phoenix to enter more easily (because a weakened mind and body are easier to possess) and corrupt it.

Then you have Eric not so much turning into a villain again (as people are speculating)but taking over the role of lilandra, thus why some of the x-men are on his side.

Which Xplains why Apocalypse, Golden Circle, War of Apes, Covenant , Fant4stic, Predator, Assassin 's Creed, Victor Frankenstein, Red Sparrow and the Darkest Minds were such big boX office success.

To be fair I thought Golden Circle was a hit? (Even though it was "meh.") Conversely, War for the Planet of the Apes was great, even if it didn't make money.

Yes, the rest of those are bad or merely meh (Red Sparrow). With that said, I quite liked The Post and Greatest Showman, which were hits last holiday season. :shrugs:

Yeah I'm thinking he just erased the memory of her being the cause of her parents death. Mystique's line about "there's another word for that" (a lie) indicates that he tried to protect her by lying to her.

Regarding that shot:

Cut to the end of the trailer, and we get a glimpse of the outer space incident that kicks off the whole Phoenix takeover. “Jean is in space, and what she’s taking in is a cosmic force that she thinks is one thing, and over the course of the movie realises is something far different, that our human science can’t explain,” says Kinberg. “But she needs to find a way to control it or she’ll destroy more than just her friends – and even our planet.”

So it doesn't seem to be a split personality like X3.

As for the trailer, I thought it was good. Not great. I liked the leaked Russian trailer more, probably because of the music and at the end had such a better payoff (with her fire hair and glowing eyes). This one sort of builds up and then fizzles with that last shot of Jean. But I heard they are working on another trailer to release very soon (probably for NYCC) and much more VFX/action heavy.

The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix are based in the Dark Phoenix Saga, just FYI. Of course there will be similarities between both movies. We all knew that even before the trailer.

If Kinberg would have decided to separate Dark Phoenix from the Dark Phoenix saga, people would be complaining too.

That's it. Empire interview also indicates there might be more Xavier hid from her. My guess is her parents dying was an accident while her powers were unlocking, but Chastain's character might play that as murder.

They seem to be alluding to Xavier's shady actions like in the comics: such as when he mind swiped Logan and telepathically made him join the x-men, or when he erased the memory of former team member deaths from Cyclops mind and formed a new team of x-men to replace them.

I imagine they changed that final shot to avoid comparisons to Captain Marvel. Which is a shame, it was a far more exciting shot.

also I think so, probably they avoided it, probably if they had released the same trailer of russia, the debate around the film would be in comparisons with CM, maybe it was a good idea not to show in the first trailer, despite being a scene well higher than that shown in CM.
