Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

I don't understand why they would want to do anything similar at all to X3. Did they think we all loved it?

Kinberg doesnt have a f**** clue about what we disliked about X3/Origins and what the fanbase really expect/wish to get on the x-men movies, u know, the core elements and characters respect.

If you read around 2 interviews of him from each era (2005, 2011, 2015, 2017) he misses the mark completely. He tries to sell the movies with decent words... but the products dont deliver, and the mistakes he says they learned, get repeated again on the next movie. So basically he didnt learn a thing and is lost.

I wonder if they think the core issues with it were the cure plot and the Juggernaut... so they're trying to serve us X-Men 3 again but without those things. Unfortunately those weren't the only problems.

Exactly. It is the vibe that I got from the trailer, even tho things aren't exactly like TLS.

I have no doubt that Jean is having a huge role in this movie, but the trailer is told by Charles and Eric POVs basicallly. And it does bother me tht they're using this story to develop their relationship again. A relationship explored ad nauseaum since 2000. While neglecting characters that have been neglected since 2000.

The poster is the best X-Men poster out of the entire series

The red coat really bugs me. It's as if Kinberg really wants to hit home how closely he wants to follow his original vision for Dark Phoenix.

I am positive it is going to be better than Last stand and Apocalypse. So there's that since we are throwing around opinions. :P

The heart of the Xmen franchise has been the human element and it has never been about the action set pieces. This is where Apocalypse was completely off from what actually worked.

“It’s 1992, nine years after Apocalypse,” confirms Kinberg. “The X-Men have become the X-Men that many of us know from the comics – they are heroes. They’re still viewed as different by society, but they’ve been more embraced than ever before. And when the movie starts in 1992, they are a known superhero team.”

:funny: Good one.

So they broke the ten year gap, i wonder why?

they cant embrace the phoeniX comics costume.

I'm positive that it would be the worst out of all X-men films.

I am thinking they want to play with the whole they changed history but the future still rhymes and has similarities. For DoFP, that made sense. But here, just do something new!
That wouldn't be a bad idea but you usually redo one of your best moments in that case like with Wrath of Khan, rather than one that didn't go over as well as it should have first time.

Well Kinberg has said he wants to keep this film grounded and human, basically inspired by Logan (and to a certain extent civil war), so its basically a case of Grounded vs Comicbook and when it comes to the Phoenix costume there are limited ways to translate that on screen unless she straight out changes into this outfit for unknown reasons.

In the animated series i believe it just manifested on her body but i don't think they would go that approach.

Grounded doesn't seem like a great approach for a Dark Phoenix cosmic story. For Logan sure.

The trailer looked pretty good actually. Given all the drama around this I wasn't too hopeful, but they threw together a good trailer. Granted, XMO:W had a great trailer too. Remains to be seen if the movie will be good.

Just giving Scott a leading role would be exciting and "something new" enough. Or showing things from Jean's POV. But there you go with Eric again and his beef with Charles.

Basically. Its my biggest issue with this movie/trailer. Magneto and Charles are and will always be front and center on each x-men movie, with the x-men coming after (some of them just for 4-5 lines). This is not paying justice to the x-men. This is a mediocre approach.

It's because they got a bunch of actors that are not in the same calibre as McAvoy and Fassbender to play "young" X-Men.. no one wanted to see teenage/young X-Men when the idea of First Class came out, no one wanted prequels, this is why the OT was such a hit in DoFP. Imagine the OT cast in a Dark Phoenix focused movie.

I think Kinberg does genuinely care about X-Men and wants to redeem the mistakes made with Phoenix. It's admirable, but I'm not sure who it ultimately serves. Casual audiences are unlikely to appreciate the opportunities squandered by X3 and will see this as a rehash, and the more involved fans who hated X3 are unlikely to be won over by this new take either.

I liked the trailer. I've made no secret that my interest in this film has been a 50/50 split of morbid curiosity and potential fan-edit fodder (some great stuff here so far). This has made me slightly more optimistic. There's an outside chance this could be decent. There is a chance that this could successfully overwrite not just the wrongs of X3, but also Apocalypse too as a strong send-off to the first class cast. It certainly appears to be doing far more interesting things between Charles/Beast/Magneto/Mystique than in Apocalypse. Scott and Ororo have already had more dynamic roles in this than they did in TLS, so that's a plus. I like that Jean's origin is being explored more thoroughly.

Some down sides of course. Hoult still getting face-time. Sorry bro, but you're playing Beast. Attempting to put a hat of the tiredness of the Mags/Xavier dynamic does not excuse it. Apocalypse poisoned several wells and it's best not to go there. Kinberg seems to be doing okay behind the camera but there's very little... actually happening in this trailer. A lot of "made for trailer" moments and lines, a lot of standing around talking.

He cares for certain characters /actors not the entire IP. I mean look at Selene, so uninspired.

It would be more Xciting but no need to rehash Dark phoeniX.

Because they are the same calibre as Mcavoy, fassbender, stewart or mckellen?

it doesn't matter whether they are young X-Men, old X-Men, thats not what its about.

But you never know maybe marvel will hire the rock to play cyclops and then people can be happy they finally got a big manly man of manliness to play Cyclops as a total badass. unlike young adults... who do they think they are? spider-man? pft!

Man, Dark Phoenix really does look like a slightly less incompetent version of Last Stand except the franchise’s most popular(and most overrated character) is missing. This movie still looks like (to quote a upcoming soon-to-be-critically panned superhero movie that’s coming out next week) “a turd in the wind.”

My hope for the ending is in the post-credit sequence Deadpool comes out of nowhere and blows up and kills all the characters from the Fox X-Men with a bomb and then looks directly at the audience and says “There! Cleaned it up for you Marvel!”

I'm saying the younger actors will be passed over in favour of McAvoy and Fassbender.. and that people are more interested in the timeline moving forward than being stuck in the past.

Yes. Obviously its a prediction. You have seen it too to warrant your positivity?
No, I haven't seen it, but I'm not the one affirming it will be a good or bad movie.

When I've been positive? I'm cautious. Although I've liked so far the tone of the trailer.

Again you think that would change with the OC?

Its like the marvel situation. people always assume the unknown will be how they wanted it to be because the known certainly isn't.

and that people are more interested in the timeline moving forward than being stuck in the past.

It makes no difference at all.

To be fair, the other actors from OT would be passed over in favour of McKellen, Stewart or Jackman like it always were. Do you think they'd give Marsden a leading role in a movie with Charles, Eric or Logan? I don't.

The problem is not the cast. The problem is their vision of the X-Men that never prioritizes the actual team and insiste in turning every storyline into a ring for Charles and Eric to fight.
