Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix Score - Hans Zimmer To Compose

No I can't.

The excellence of a composer is highly dependent on the director he or she is collaborating with.

And Kinberg is not Nolan.

Then again John Powell made an amazing score out of a Brett Ratner movie, so sometimes an excellent composer it's just excellent.

Powell's score is amazing. I remember humming that theme after I came out of the Cinema from the premiere

Powell's X3 score is underrated and easily the highlight of that movie, imo. I wouldn't had mind if he had returned to score this, however, he already tackled an X-Men movie that somewhat dealt with Dark Phoenix, albeit poorly.

Marco Beltrami would've been another worthy composer because he's had experience scoring some Fox/Marvel movies The Wolverine, Fant4stic, and Logan. The latter two were produced by Kinberg.

Like I mentioned earlier I think Zimmer will farm out his score to other composers (possibly Lorne Balfe, Benjamin Wallfisch, Steve Mazzaro, Andrew Kawczynski, etc.). Zimmer will most likely come up with the themes, motifs, and certain cues, while his collaborators put the rest of the score together utilizing Zimmer's themes/motifs. Hopefully he'll keep Junkie XL away from this.

This is cool but it's gonna be very hard to beat the last 2 John Ottman scores which were fantastic and much better than the CBM scores Zimmer has made after MOS. I really hope Junkie XL stays far away from this project.

If Junkie shows up. Kinberg's done it.
That's 3 for 3 on Mad Max: Fury Road peeps.
Composer, 2nd Unit Action Director, Stunt Coordinator

Interesting, didn't see this coming. I've enjoyed Ottman's work for the franchise (aside from DoFP), so on the one hand I'm disappointed to see him go (I assume this also means he won't be editing the film), but maybe Zimmer will bring a much needed fresh perspective to the series.

Still won't be seeing this in theaters, though. At least I have the OST to look forward to.

Powell's X score is my favorite of the franchise, and one of my favorite superhero scores ever. Still bummed he didn't do another cbm, but then that would've conflicted with his pacifist ideology. Still slightly surprised he agreed to do Solo, but then I guess Star Wars films are their own category. It might also be hard to resist being part of the legacy Williams has created. Only one other composer has been had the opportunity to utilize the franchises' vast library of themes and motifs on the big screen.

Trailer 2 or 3 for this film better have Han's score. There has to be some Man of Steel trailer 3 epicness. I am kinda tired of slow music trailer pop songs for these films.

Zimmer is a great pull but I liked Ottaman. The opening Apocalypse ritual scene was absolutely made by the frantic scoring.

I like Zimmer but hopefuly his music doesnt drown out the dialogue or action, as has been the case in TDKR.

there have been rumors dark phoenix is actully biggest budgeted x-men film ever. which is partly why they are waiting for special effects to be ready before showing any footage.

That's not a rumor. Kinberg straight up said it.

You sure about that? I doubt Kinberg would be stupid enough to confirm that this is the highest budgeted film.

Oh ****, I only meant to highlight the part where that poster mentioned time devoted to VFX.

...but Hans Zimmer isn't one to use old themes from other composers, so it makes me sad that this last movie won't have any of the original cast members, nor any of the already established musical themes from the old movies

Hold up, he has. He used Elfman's eponymous theme in The Simpsons Movie (he used it a LOT), as well as Lalo Schfrin's main theme in Mission Impossible 2. But that's the exception to the rule.

Now if Kinberg wants Zimmer and co to use Ottman's material, there's nothing preventing them from doing so. And if Kinberg wants a new sound (far more likely), Zimmer will certainly do that.

But on the whole, I'm sorely disappointed with Kinberg's choice of composer. He's produced a lot more films than he wrote (he produced Kenneth Branagh's last two films which were scored by Patrick Doyle), so he had the cream of the crop to pick from. But he had to choose the stereotypical choice... I hope Zimmer's un-retirement from comic-book films is more orchestral than sound design. Or at least something fun, like Crimson Tide or The Da Vinci Code.

Beautifully said.

I know Zimmer has his fans (particularly the Nolanites), and he has written some beautiful and emotionally powerful music -- but his sound has become pervasive and annoying. I've said this on other forums, but a lot of his superhero scoring leaves much to be desired apart from select highlights.

Dark Phoenix is a sequel to the previous two X-films -- there ought to be some kind of musical thematic continuity. Or at least written in a similar style.

Zimmer's score is still the only aspect of this film I'm legitimately excited about. Hopefully everything gets completed as intended and we get an OST release.

I'm curious as to what style he's going for. This being a retread of the Phoenix storyline, will it be similar to Powell's TLS, more in line with his work for the DCEU or something entirely new? I just hope he stays away from the sonic abrasiveness of Dunkirk.

I wanted to see (hear?) how Hans Zimmer and the X-Men sounded together, so I made a couple of edits. (I know the last one is Jablonsky, but come on it's the embodied spirit of Zimmer)

His Da Vinci Code score is amazing, but the truth is all of his scores are not as memorable as that, precisely because he works a lot.

I thought BvS score was pretty meh.

Hope he pulls something memorable for Dark Phoenix, although I'm not holding my breath. John Powell's score for The Last Stand was pretty great.

The Powell score was very inspired, I hope since the X-Men are more different than the usual drab heroes he scores, the score reflects it as well. And since you mention de BVS score at least the Wonder Woman theme came out of that and it’s a pretty flexible theme that works with many instruments (the orchestral version done by Danny Elfman was very nice in JL), so I’m hoping at least a memorable theme for the Phoenix hopefully.
