Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix Score - Hans Zimmer To Compose

Surprisingly didn't find the score all that great in the movie. Certainly not as good as X3 or even Zimmer's previous works like TDKT and MOS.

The X-Men theme/motif was okay

I actually didn’t like parts of the score. because the film is so low-key and intimately shot for the most part, there were times where the music felt too “epic” and triumphant sounding for what was happening on screen

I haven't seen the film (and won't until it's available to rent), however as an album I thought the score was pretty good if a tad underwhelming. Unfortunately my prediction about it sounding like Dunkirk/Inferno was correct, but thankfully it's miles better than either of those, easily Zimmer's best since BvS. Overall it's a lot less melodic than I was hoping for (I only count two themes, the main X-Men one and one for the Dark Phoenix). The moments that use choir are nice, and the themes are solid (if a tad unimaginative). The score just doesn't pack much of an emotional punch; the bulk of cues are mostly droning and ambient sound design, not the kind of material that makes a lasting impression.

Even though I liked it, I'd still rank almost all of the other main X-scores above it. I just prefer more thematic and hummable music, and Powell's take on this story is so much more emotional and nuanced.

The score is the one thing I think is indisputably top notch about this movie. And yes, it's way better than the score for The Last Stand. That said, Dark Phoenix is proof that a good score does not save a deeply flawed movie.

The score really is another lead character with Jean. Nice themes for Jean, the Phoenix, Magneto and the X-Men. It is probably my second favorite X-Men score.

It's definitely up there in the top 2.

I think it's the worst and most boring, generic one he's ever done. Right down there with BvS.

It’s my 2nd favorite of the franchise. First is X3, 3rd would be DoFP.

5) X-Men: Apocalypse: I mean “The Transference” And “You’re X-Men” alone are worth the listening, I didn’t completely love the new choral aspect of the X-Men main theme but I’m a sucker for Ottman’s theme, so there you go.

4) X-Men: First Class: Just a really amazing villain theme for Magneto, love the almost call back to the Cerebro theme from the first movie, and loved the new X-Men theme, it got a little over heroic in the actual movie score mix, but fortunately none of those over the top tracks are on the actual score.

3) X-Men: Just a beautiful Kamen score, dark, broody, and it had an amazing fanfare for Magneto, I remember watching the movie as a kid and it was almost scary, and the score helped, great first theme for the X-Men with an amazing reprise before the credits start, cool motif for Mystique and a moving theme for Rogue and Logan’s bond.

2) X-Men: The Last Stand: Talk about a score being absolutely superior to a movie, the Phoenix sequences were truly augmented by Powell’s amazing score, they truly elevated this movie as much as humanly possible, the main theme wasn’t also pretty cool sadly most of the score in the film is obscured in probably one of the worst sound mixes in current cinema history, but fortunately again the score itself is pretty much perfect.

1) X2: The main theme is just glorious mixed perfectly with the militaristic drums signaling Stryker’s involvement, and just hints of evil and mischief (never like my hero themes to be over the top heroic), Mystique has a beautiful harp theme, the seduction theme for Pyro was amazing, lots of great urgency sections in the score, and every now and then the just absurdly well placed nod to the main theme in just the correct moment, a nice little theme for the future Phoenix that never was, and just one of the most badass endings of a soundtrack with a fake ending, the ultimate X-Men score for the ultimate X-Men movie (so far).

I frelling loved the piece that played when the X-men went into space in the beginning. Other than that I enjoyed the score througout the movie but nothing really stood out, other than the one I just mentioned.

Apparently release of the 2 CD edition of the score has stalled due to the film bombing at the box office. The second CD would've been called X-Periments, and is already programmed and mastered.
