You Have My Permission To Lounge - Part 10

I don't see how any rational thinking person would blame a movie for a string of other bad movies

I certainly don't. I blame the idiots in charge who thought they could re-capture lighting in a bottle.

I'm glad I was around to truly experience the hype and excitement of TDK. Wonder if we'll ever truly be that excited for a BATMAN film again?

Perhaps it's just part of getting older?

Belated reply, but I feel like we were roughly close to it in 2012 to see the follow-up. Rises... did not come close to TDK, but I think time has been kind to the film and it still stands tall in its own right as one of the genre's most memorable films (although being linked to TDK can't hurt).

But going forward? Personally, no. I imagine if you weren't there in 2008 or too young, you'll be ready to have "your" Batman. But as someone who grew up with Keaton through Clooney, and then got Bale, I'm pretty good. I will see The Batman, but I am so content with TDKT, I cannot imagine ever being hyped, because I know for me nothing will ever come close to even Batman Begins, which to me is the "slightest" of the three, and it is still one of the finest superhero movies ever made and a classic in its own right.

They didn't have to recapture lightning in a bottle...They just had to make the next version of Batman...Well, not offensive to everything that Batman stands for.

I find it amusing that WB found a way to f*** it's 4 greatest characters (Batman, Superman, The Joker, Lex Luthor) in one bloody year :funny:

I'll never understand how they pulled that off

truly astounding commitment to awfulness

You never know. Something might come along one day and outdo it, as unlikely as it seems with how well those films turned out. There are a fair number of talented guys out there who could give it a good shot, and Reeves is one of them. Even if not beating TDK, then getting in the mix with the others.

That's true. I'm not saying Reeves won't make a good movie. I'm just saying, I suppose barring a mind blowing trailer I'm failing to anticipate, I don't see myself being hyped for it. I imagine it will be like most MCU movies are for me? "Oh the next one's here? Well let's head out to the theater, I suppose!"

The TDKT only comes second to me behind the OT Star Wars films and in many ways they resemble each other in the way they played out. I still think despite the saturation of the market, those films will withstand the test of time. I would say I enjoyed pretty well all of the Marvel films but will they be having 10 year anniversary showings of Infinity War down the line? I'm thinking no. Marvel continues to produce really good reliable fast food while the DCEU keeps pumping out items like the arch deluxe and mcpizza.

You know they did have a somewhat testy relationship during Washington's second term when Jefferson was his Secretary of State and wanted to join France's side in a war with Britain after the Revolution, but Washington correctly understood that the mob had taken over, and if America as a young nation was to enter a European war....

Oh, I missed the joke didn't I?

If the reports of Reeves' film about presenting Batman as more of a detective than a fighter are true, I'm very much on board for that. TDK and BB showcased some of Bat's detective skills but didn't do much with them aside from a few short scenes.

I'm not counting Batfleck as a detective as that idiot couldn't figure out the White Portuguese was a boat, and was somehow deceived into wanting to kill Superman because he was sent angry newspaper clippings.

I feel like compared to most of the Marvel properties, Batman is in a lot of ways a more Nolan-esque property. Particularly after the late 70s and 80s comics which introduced a lot of politics and psychology in the mythos.

Will we see another Batman film as culturally significant as TDK? Probably not. But I think as long as future directors continue to be inspired by his more Nolan-esque stories, Batman will remain a "heavy" franchise.

So many themes! What can it all mean?!?!
I don't know, too complex, too puzzling, too... profound.

I can't untangle the message encrypted by all the splattered paint, set in muted colors.

Batman has hit the cultural sweet spot many times... more so than other comic book characters, certainly.

Batmania 66,
Batmania 89,
The resultant shine that allowed Batman Returns and B:TAS to be the hits they were
Batman Forever scratched an itch in '95
Joker Mania in '08
The general prestige of the Nolan trilogy.

It'll come around again... but I do think people need a little breather from the character before he reaches the same heights.

I agree about the idea of having a breather. I think the batman character had just from a successful portrayal and series of quality films. I think it does make it harder for anyone to do an original take on a character to make people set aside their loves for the previous films.....especially in such a short amount of time.

I give Affleck this. I'm not a fan of him and was not a fan of him playing Batman. I thought he did an passable job in BvS. The fight scene (which isn't really acting) was pretty amazing, however, that sort of over the top stuff wouldn't have fit into the Nolan films anyways and for that reason, I preferred how Nolan presented his fight scenes as it fit his movies and were believable. JL....well....I thought Affleck was pretty terrible actually and I find it funny that fanboys give such a pass to that performance yet pounce on Bale's gravelly voice.

I'm looking forward to what Reeves does, but to be honest I would rather they let Batman sit out for a while. DC needs to take the time to get its house in order, and continuing to focus so much on Batman (and his surrounding characters) gives the impression that they don't care as much about their other characters. Affleck coming in so soon after Bale was a mistake.
