Yeah but dude come on thats EVERY fandom. I dont think its fair to place a blanket over the whole thing. We could easily look at the Star Wars fandom and say the same thing. God when The Last Jedi came out the stuff i saw online from angry fans rivaled the worst of the Snyder fandom, maybe even worse. And it was all over the place. The stuff Rian Johnson went thru on that movie was disgusting. He basically got bullied out of that franchise despite making a movie that made 1.3 Billion at the box office and 90% on RT.

Every fandom has the loud, shouting toxic side that demands to be heard and will spam social media until they are. Doesnt mean there aren’t tons and tons of good people in it too.

Snyder is going full Trump and exposing his narcissism for the world to see. What a creep.

But not every fandom is enabled by a filmmaker involved in the franchise who's not only taking advantage of the situation by not doing anything to calm things down, but he deliberately posts feisty things to rattle them up.

Most filmmakers don't need to use quotes from Italian fascists but Snyder knows that his audience will eat it up.

The quote is originally from the French revolution:
Henri de la Rochejaquelein - Wikipedia).

It's a quote Snyder seems to have liked for quite some time, he wore a shirt with it during filming of BVS

I think this could easily have been his planned post to mark the digital release of ZSJL unrelated to the article.

No, no, no. The infallible internet attributes the quote to Mussolini. Also to Ngo Dinh Diem (former South Vietnam president — assassinated in 1963). Also to Mary Matalin (of all people — former Republican political consultant). And there’s probably more.

The most disturbing part of that quote is, "Avenge Me".
All you need is one unstable person who thinks doing something violent is somehow supporting Zack...

    You're comparing Snyder to Trump?

The quote was popularized by Mussolini and is attached to his legacy. But since other people have used it I guess we should celebrate Snyder proudly wearing that quote on his shirt.

But it predates Mussolini by a century.

Henri de la Rochejaquelein - Wikipedia

Knowing that Snyder appreciates classical art (and history), I don't think he was thinking Mussolini. Don't get me wrong, it's still an apparent rallying cry for his fandom and that's not helping anybody right now but saying he's quoting Mussolini is a stretch.

“You give me too much credit” is a pretty limp line from a guy who’s done a lot to foster the “Us vs Them” mentality and very little to reign in the harassment that he knows does happen. I know the Snyder Cut movement is made up of mostly respectful, sane folks. But rather than whine about the movement being unfairly portrayed as toxic, I think this is a chance to respond to reports (independently researched and backed-up) of Snyder enabling harassment with anything other than variations of “It’s nbd” or deflection or whataboutism. He’s not being "a passionate artist" with that one, he’s being vain. I don’t know what deserves admiring/defending there.

I know the quote pre-dates Mussolini but that doesn't change the fact that the quote was popularized by Mussolini. When people see that quote it's 100% associated to the legacy of Mussolini. He was also the first to popularise the English translation of the quote.

As you say, Snyder appreciates art and history so he would obviously know the history of the quote and what it represents.

I saw you spamming the same message in the comment section over at comicbookmovie.com. Do I detect a slight bias?

So to slightly deviate the discussion, take this with a GRAINNNNN of salt but Cavill might be showing up at comic con. This came from Dave the Film Junkee who has reliable people in the know. But again, grain of salt guys….but how crazy would that be?!!

Zaslav wants to revitalize Superman and maybe he liked Cavill in the role so I think it's more of a possibility now than it was before the Discovery merger. But I'm not getting my hopes up. I'll believe it when I'm sitting in the theater watching a new Superman movie with Cavill.

Fair enough. Speaking for myself… though I was familiar with the quote, I couldn’t immediately place its origin. It kinda sounded like something Conan the Barbarian would say.:hehe: OTOH, a feminist marching for abortion rights might display the very same slogan on her placard. I.e., it’s general enough that it can connote different meanings in different contexts. Also, words and phrases can — over time — become decoupled from their original sources. (And this quote, as noted, isn’t even original to Mussolini.) If you do a Google image-search for the quote, you’ll be treated to a screenful of mostly T-shirt ads. :wow: Go figure. And I'll assume (perhaps at my peril) that most of the buyers, wearers and manufacturers of these Ts are not endorsing fascism. Cheers.

I think Snyder feels too much gratitude to the fans, he sees the positive stuff the send him, they got his film released. That he's got an idealistic concept of the fans and feels indebted to them, so he's inclined to think the best of them and is afraid criticising them would appear ungrateful.

I reckon it's probably hard to be unbiased with a group of people who are consistently praising you. Especially if there have been a lot of people constantly bashing you and your work for years. Who stays objective after that?

Heh, the generalization of a fandom is off the charts on here. As a Snyder fan, guess that makes me a dead italian dictator follower? I’m still happy I supported them suicide prevention campaigns and saw his cut.

I think thats a fair and accurate assessment. I dont think the guy's this Machiavellian architect that people are making him out to be. He's grateful for what all these people did for him, plain and simple.

Anyway...hope this Cavill stuff is true!

It would amuse me greatly if he made a surprise appearance just for the Witcher.
