That's the one thing that has frustrated me more than anything, especially since the fifth season. Here's what I've noticed:
From the Reeve films:
- Design of the Fortress and how it was built (Clark throwing a crystal)
- Jonathan dying of a heart attack
- Mention of Ben Hubbard at the end of S8 (also done in SR)
- Actual use of the destruction of Krypton footage during Clark's training in "Arrival," and an establishing shot that was perilously similar to the film's intro in a recent episode ("Abandoned," I believe)
- The Silver Age notion that Clark Kent is the disguise, and a bumbling one at that
From Lois & Clark:
- Lois and Clark getting engaged and then married
- The upcoming "Lois with super-powers" plot in "Prophecy." Sounds an awful lot like that Ultra Woman episode from L&C's third season.
From Superman Returns:
- The costume. In fact, that's my biggest issue heading into the finale. There is absolutely no way Tom can fit into that costume, since it was designed specifically for that film. If they can spend $2,500 on a red leather jacket, then surely they can put that amount into designing a unique supersuit, one that doesn't rip off from any previous actor.
I'm actually with you on this. Through the show's first five season, they basically had free reign to interpret the mythos however they wanted. Unfortunately, WB features got involved (remember, Singer and GoughLar met during SR pre-production to make sure there wasn't any "toe-stepping" going on" which I interpret as, make sure Smallville links up with the Donner flicks).
I've said this many times in the past, but it's most clear with the way Krypto-tech was handled in the first four seasons. Remember how everything was metallic and geometrical (the octagonal key, the ship's heart, the starblade, etc.), even the clothing Jor-El and Lara wore were colorful (in the scene in Memoria where we see Jor-El and Lara clasping hands as Kal-El is about to take off, they are wearing blue and red robes) But then, all of a sudden, everything was crystalline and cold. At the time, everyone assumed Smallville was being canceled to make way for the movie franchise, and I think there were discussions to make sure everything "linked" to the Donner designs since that was the production design in Singer's movie.
Personally, I wish the SV producers were allowed to continue their own interpretation of Superman without having the movie division dictate what they can and cannot do.
I'm not sure if they would actually use the theme on the show, but I think it's a bit misleading to use it in promos because it makes people who don't watch regularly think that its related to the movies somehow. I get that its a theme that is widely recognized as Superman's theme, just like all of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones themes are widely recognized by fans and casual viewers of those films, but it just feels a little weird to hear it now, even if its just a promo.
Well we don't know for sure yet what the suit will be in the finale. For all we know it can look totally different from the sr prop they used. Like I said before wouldn't be first time a "prop" has changed looks. As for themes and all that. Sure they used donner stuff/silver age things too. But they have used and done many things on there own take and other ersa of comics/shows and all that. So sure at a time then whe al/miles where around they did favor donner stuff more. But I don't see it being full out like donner superman in the end here. Same with the reboot. Its probably going to be vastly different.
I remember watching that episode back when in aired! I don't remember anything from it except for a few scenes, but what I did like from that L&C episode, was this scene where Lois as Ultra Woman is very upset because she was told there were two things happening from both sides of the world, and she picked one first to save, saved it, but failed on the other one. It lead to a scene where Clark comfronts her and letting her know what he has known all this time which was that she's one person, and she can't be at two places at once.
I wonder if we're going to get something like that or similar for the SV episode. But wait, isn't Clark going to keep his powers? It's just Lois geeting a "fair share" right?
I'm thinking Darkseid is less a physical persona in the Smallville verse, and more a spiritual one, possession like, and will inhabit Lex same way Zod did back in s4-ish so that Clark/Superman can fight Lex/Darksied at the same time.
honestly as a huge fan of Jack Kirby and his fourth world characters, smallvilles version of darkseid is a rather insulting and dumbed down childish version of the comics and cartoon version IMO as a fan.
I'm a fan too and I don't find this version of Darkseid insulting or childish at all. He's still a global threat, he still has servants doing his bidding, he still preys on living beings' negativity(especially like in Final Crisis). So IMO as a fan too, I completely disagree with everything you say.
davidkretschmar: Smallville scoop? Lois and Clark: Super-powered couple?
Ha! Super-powered couple. We see what you did there. We'll have an extensive Q&A post with writer/producer Kelly Souders about the end of Smallville later this week, but for now just know that she promised fans that they'll be happy with all the moments in the series finale, and that includes the Lois and Clark ones.
CloisForever23: Can we please get some Clois scoop? #Smallville
We bugged Kelly about finally seeing Lois and Clark make it down the aisle, and while she insisted she had to keep her lips tightly zipped on that subject, she did offer this: "We will certainly be seeing a lot of white, taffeta, some silk and some flower boutonnières and all that sort of stuff." Sounds like things are about to get fancy!

Sweet Merciful Christ... that's... that's an actual spoiler to a show I actually watch... I just...
I need it to stop. I need SV to be over so that I'll no longer have anything in common with the frustrated, Oxygen Network-loving nutballs who'd waste a questions on that & are so fanatical that they actually get it answered.
<shudders> I need to shower now... feel so, so dirty...

Well, to be fair, the question wasn't (at least worded to be) about all the frou frou nonsense that it was answered with. Yes, it's unfortunate that it seems that most questions seem to be about Chlollie or Clois. Let me say for the record that the 'shipper group names bug me. To me, they represent the pandering and catering that the makers of the ship participate in for certain portions of the fanbase. It's sad, but it is what it is.
Also worth noting, however, that rarely are Souders or Peterson allowed to revealed anything worthwhile in these kinds of things. Most often, it's fluff like this as opposed to good, spoiler-y details. I also think we're bound to not get as many hard facts about what's coming up, the closer we get to the finale. I'm sure they're taking every precaution to lock that **** down tighter than tight. I, for one, appreciate that. It's the ending of Smallville. I enjoy my spoilers as much as anybody, but I'm trying to go without the major spoilers for the finale.
Yeah, I know she didn't, but something tells me "CloisForever23" was probably gushing her squee-ing little heart out over that quote, all the same.
It'd be fun to co-opt a LifeTime movie-of-the-week (spoiler: a woman gets her a** whooped and learns to fight back) by inserting lots of t*ts and explosions and then acting completely oblivious to how out-of-place those elements were when 3 million angry viewers pitched a fit afterwards.
Yep, the wedding will happen in a church instead of the barn like Bride.
I hope they put in a lot of time in making Clark's transformation into Superman as grand as the wedding itself as I don't want it to be an afterthought.
I think they're just answering the questions involving the romances, I'm sure they've been getting a ton of juicy questions that they can't answer.
Also, reguarding the use of the Williams theme: I believe it's they're own decision to use it, Kelly S. seemed pretty enthusiastic without giving too much away about using it in the finale. Personally I am really looking forward to it if that's the case. I mean, I'm looking forward to the finale anyways but if the Williams theme is used I will be having a geekasm.
Some folks continue to point out that there were cost issues with using the Williams themes after season 2, but something to remember about music and rights... costs, licensing, and allowance can always change. All I'm saying is, they may have gotten their hand smacked for over-using it 8 years ago, but it may be a different situation now...
Kelly certainly sounded very excited about the idea of using them again the finale.
I've grown to be quite a fan of Lou Feb's score, and the new hero theme he came up with for the show, but I'd be damned if I didn't have a happy nerd freak out from hearing the Williams themes in the Finale.
Dont think the Williams theme was ever a "cost" issue. I know Mark Snow got crap from WB for sneaking a few bars of the Krypton theme into "Rosetta" but thought that had more to do with securing the permissions from Features who at that point was trying to ramp up what would eventually become SR. .

Ahh, I couldn't remember if it was cost or permissions. It was certainly more than a few bars of the Krypton theme in "Rosetta"... Snow straight-up re-recorded and incorporated the opening of the cue "The Fortress of Solitude" for when Clark heads to NYC to find Dr. Swann. Throughout the whole rest of the episode, there are explicitly clear statements of the main Superman theme, including a fantastic(ally foreboding) interpretation at the very end of the episode, leading into a great statement of the Krypton theme. Every bit of the music was more than sneaky, it was clear and unabashed. There were later uses, most notably at the end of Season 2 (when the Jor-El AI reveals itself and Clark takes off for Metropolis). I know that someone (Snow or Febre) snuck a little bit of the main Superman theme into the opening of "Arrival" when Clark looks upon the newly-constructed Fortress.
If you're right, if they were trying to keep the music reserved for what eventually became SR, then perhaps I was right in one of my estimates last week that perhaps, with a ties-cutting reboot on the horizon, TPTB may be easing up on the music control for SV.
Not saying they're being forced now, but there was clearly some Features meddling between seasons 4 and 5. All of it having to do with the Superman movie (which turned out to be SR) that was in pre-production. Remember, for the first half of Season 5, most insiders were assuming Smallville was being canceled to make room for the movie franchise (remember how all the pre-season promos alluded to seeing everything you'd always wanted to see?) The problem is that SV kept gaining in ratings and making a lot of bank for the shareholders so they let it stay on the air (it was basically the only thing keeping The WB afloat before the merger with UPN). Season Five is when everything started getting Donner-esque (the Fortress, the crystals, Pa Kent's heart attack, the coming threat of Zod and the phantoms, etc.) but I don't think that design aesthetic was part of the show's original plan (as witnessed by how they depicted all things Kryptonian prior to that season).
I just wanted to post this because the finale is coming. It's dated, as it was made when Season 10 was announced, but this fan-made trailer gave me chills. This person should make an updated one, maybe a remake of the shown at SDCC 2010 that won't be officially released. Anway, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC1NsceX8fA
