2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 2

The competition in March 2013 isn't quite as fierce as late June/July 2012 is, but there's at least 1-2 major films per weekend. Elysium, Oz prequel, Percy Jackson 2, Carrie, Jack the Giant Killer and The Host.

I'm sure there's room for all three movies, but placing G.I. Joe 2 against The Host and The Marriage Counselor on the same weekend is a potentially stupid move. Those three movies will draw in a huge mix of people, but it'll eat into each other's earnings.

Paramount has a better chance of bypassing a 3D conversion and releasing G.I. Joe 2 in a less busy period like September. If it went to September 7th opposite Gangster Squad, it would make a killing. And it wouldn't lose 3D screens to Resident Evil 5 the week after.
The Host and Marriage counselor are both highly geared towards women. Seems like a good spot to place it. Gives something for the men to see, while there is suitable counter programming for women at the same time. There is no Amazing Spider Man to be beaten by opening weekend, its a good move if you ask me. Also, it has a chance to have legs, because theres no TDKR to compete with. Its alot easier for them to make there money back in the new slot.

Your only valid competetion argument is Potter and Captain America. Green Lantern was a total dud, it's failure had nothing to do with Transformers, it was cause the movie sucked. Pirates and Hangover had two different audiences, Pirates is family entertainment, Hangover was an R-rated comedy.

Never said it's failure had all that much to do with TF(though it didn't help). I very clearly said that the studios consciously released their bigger summer quarter releases very close to each other. In that case it was a week apart. One look at GL's budget will tell you all you need to know about how big that film was considered to be(it cost much more than TF).

Intended audience can only shield a film so much in light of a big zeitgeist film. For example, if Avengers is PG13(?), and Dragon Tattoo is restricted, and Tattoo comes out the same day, you would have to be pretty dense to thing there won't be any carry over with audience draw. Hangover was summer fun and the line ups were filled with many a teen and many a dates(among others). Pirates lines were filled with many a teen and many a dates....oh and kids. Summer fun is Summer fun.

First off, Marvel has owned the first weekend in May for a decade now, I don't know why you said "as of late". Second, Avengers dealt with and demolished three movies studios had high hopes for.
I said as of late because, these past few years may has been pretty exclusively theirs. As opposed to the years when Spidey would battle Matrix and Pirates and Shrek weeks of each other. This and 2008's may have been a joke.

WB that they'd strike gold again with Dark Shadows like they did with Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. However, they forgot Tim Burton's hits are based on well known properties like Alice and Charlie, Dark Shadows was a cult property and if the vampire doesn't sparkle, the teen girls aren't interested.
Yea, they threw what they thought was a heavy hitter, they were wrong this time, like I said. In another world they would have thrown a real hit at Avengers and who knows what would have happened.

I really do believe that if MIB3 opened in Dark Shadows spot Avengers could've beaten it. I really don't think Will Smith has the box office juice he once did, Hancock opened to $62 million 4 years ago and the last Men in Black movie opened 10 years ago. I can see it opening around the same numbers as Hancock at best. I mean is anyone really interested in seeing a new Men in Black? I see it opening big enough to beat Avengers this weekend, but that's only because Avengers is going to be in it's 4 week of release.
Unless MIB opens over 100 mill then it's a safe bet it wouldn't have beat avengers. Like I said, this May has been a bust. Still a film opening over 80 mill may have taken away from some of Avengers take.

Yes, I agree, no one really "complained" about TDK's lack of comp. I've already stated in this thread that TDKR faces a much different summer than TDK did. For that reason among others, it's numbers will be interesting. (2008 was a bust imo).

As for Joe. I'm happy for two reasons. Not every film can have a great date in the middle of the summer(like Avengers). Joe now has a real chance to make some money and not have to deal with subsequent crap. And two, The Rock does well in the Spring. Joe will be making Fast Five money.
I'm very curious why they didn't get the Director of Step Up 3D to shoot that film natively though. Kinda STUPID imo.

That new Batman TV spot, seems to be light on the dark tone that's been present in most of the footage so far.

Looks like WB is trying to catch the attention of the more fun oriented Superhero fans post avengers.

It's one tv spot. TV spots often use humor in them. TDK did it too.

No, more like The Avengers is dying down and WB is now pulling out all the guns on The Dark Knight Rises.

TDK had a dark tone and tens of millions of people saw it. People should know what to expect from the sequel so i doubt they have to market the film in a lighter tone to attract anyone.

yet here we are.
The first I've seen of the humor in this film, a very stark contrast to anything of this film seen before...then again there was that cat woman car line.

Oh god.

Yes, WB is so worried by The Avengers' successes that those in the marketing department are releasing TV Spots that featured more light-hearted banter. :o

I swear, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Devin wrote an article tonight referencing TDKR's TV Spots.

"Upon WB realizing that cynicism is a dying tone in American cinema, the marketing department unleashed two tv spots last night that reeked of desperation -- in a attempt to reach a more broad audience. Surely, WB no longer has confidence in their product. Just as well, The Avengers is leading the charge in brighter superhero movies that act like true CBMs..."

the host will draw the twilight crowd huge box office

At this point, even more than the wasted promotion, the studio has basically said that they have no faith in GI Joe as a movie. That's a high hurdle to overcome. Films have been moved backed before and ultimately succeeded, Titanic, but generally there are production related reasons floated.

Months of expensive reshooting and then a whole new round of promotion indicate that they'll be lucky if it isn't a Battleship level financial disaster. Or even a John Carter level disaster.

I was looking forward to it simply because I sensed Channing Tatum's character was getting the axe, but now that he's returning, f**k G.I. Joe 2. You're not getting my money. Tatum is an awful actor and the decision to revive a character simply because the actor is enjoying a slight surge of popularity indicates that the studio has no faith in the project at all.

The two TV spots are the same tone and tenor of TDK TV spots. They're trying to sell it as a slick action movie with entertainment to hit all four quadrants. The Marvel Zombies are becoming almost as bad as the Nolanites who credited Obama's election (America electing its first black president) with Obama/"this generation's Woodstock."

On a lighter note, did anyone see the new cover for EW with Spider-Man? That costume looks uglier every time I see it. To be fair the lighting's way off, but it is still not very well designed.

I like the costume a lot...but yeah, that's an awful picture. The lighting's all wrong.

Yep, my sentiments exactly. This tone talk is ridiculous, and it's only a matter of time before Marvel Zombies start posting those type of comments all over the site.

Anywho, yes, Spidey's suit has appeared awkward to me since day one (Garfield's extremely lean body and giant head don't help the situation) and it hasn't gotten any better. Also, what in hell's blazes is up with the puny golden optics?

I think this suit looks better shrouded in some darkness or in motion. This picture doesn't capture the new suit's best angle, and the posture is awkward.

I've ranted about it in another thread, but seriously, WTF was Paramount thinking for postponing it by 9 months, to March 2013? Now all the marketing and toy tie-ins went to waste, all for 3D?! Whoever made this decision should be fired.

Worse of all, Tatum is coming back. That pretty much kills the chances of this movie actually being decent or good, for that matter. The whole reason why the executives lured in Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis was for horrendous casting choice that was Channing as Duke.

The guy just can't play a badass.

yeah the suit looks fine in all the footage but not so much in pics
