2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

Not to start a flame war here. However on a level of impressiveness how would we compare the $1.5 billion made by the avengers to let's say an est. $1.1 billion final haul from TDKR in 2d?

It is very impressive to be talking about a 2d film reaching a billion, it's been 4 years since that's happened and 4 years in blockbuster terms is almost a generation it seems. Many people predicted the 2d billion blockbuster dead.

Its a great year to be a fan of superheroes. Both movies deserve every penny. But, will another 2D movie do a billion again? heck, how, many future blockbusters will even be 2D is a big question.

I don't get why you guys will slobber all over Nolan having two billion dollar movies, while James Cameron makes two 2 billion dollar flicks and the consensus on him is almost entirely negative these days.

Both impressive but if we had to quantify than Avengers cause I really didn't see that coming. TDKR was already coming off a billion dollar movie. Also TA still would have passed and beat TDKR without 3D.

I don't see any ticket sale numbers.

So Est. Tickets is not what you're looking for?

I stand corrected. I only glanced at the link. I thought you had posted the adjusted for inflation list. My apologies.

Oh, I see what you guys did. I didn't even think of that before. Fascinating stuff...

Titanic didn't make two billion until it was re-released.

And what negative consensus? Cameron is a legend.

I guess its because for a lot of people I know its The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises > Avatar/Titanic so we're happier for Nolan. I guess the whole 3d stuff to (avatar anyway)

Titanic didn't make two billion until it was re-released.

Titantic grossed $1 Billion in 1997. Let me repeat that. Titantic grossed $1 Billion in 1997. Titantic's success is the equivalent of Avatar. As I said earlier, $2 Billion is the new billion. It took 6 years for another film to reach a billion after Titanic. That movie being Peter Jackson's Return of the King. Then it took 3 years for it to happen again. Dead Man's Chest being the one. Since then, a total of 8 films have reached a billion. All thanks to increased ticket prices, an expanding foreign market, 3D, and IMAX.

So, yes, we're gonna give James Cameron more credit. The man has set the benchmark TWICE.

Dude there is totally a bad consensus of Cameron around here, I have seen endless amounts of Avatar hating because it's the cool thing to do over the past couple years. Avatar made TWO BILLION, almost three. That is impressive, unlike what the 1 billion mark is now.

There is the point of contention that Nolan makes great, more edgy films while still making bank. Inceptions numbers are pretty stupid all things considered.

Only here. Cameron is extremely popular among the general audience, especially overseas. Ask anyone who James Cameron is and they'll respond by saying Titanic or Avatar.

It's disliked because AVATAR featured a script with recycled material. To me, it honestly felt like James focused on the visuals and CGI first and foremost over the story.

I mean, I expect better from the guy who gave us such classics as Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

batman fans happy that TDKR made 1 billion? why. will you get a sequel to TDKR?

Is this a philosophy class? Fans are happy that a movie they liked did well. No reason to question it, really.

I'd say T2. :word:

Well, you felt that because it is completely true. Doesn't change the facts that the technology behind the film and the visuals themselves were completely groundbreaking.

And I'm not denying that. I was in awe of the visuals. I think everyone was astonished too. The ecosystem and environment he created from scratch was gorgeous. Cameron unarguably deserves attention and praise for what he accomplished (and he did) but it doesn't mean his film is perfect.

Ladies and gentlement, let's not forget to adjust for inflation.

Jaws - $1.9 Billion
Star Wars - $2.7 Billion
E.T. - $2.2 Billion

Jurassic Park - $914.6 million in 1993
Adjusted for inflation, definitely over a billion.

The Phantom Menace
$924.3 million in 1999
Adjusted for inflation, definitely over a billion.
Eh, I don't put much credence in adjusted for inflation numbers myself.

Mainly because 90% of the rest of the world doesn't either. :o

Sorry I should've had posted the link for Est. Tickets and Adjusted For Inflation. Thanks for posting the link. I added them now to the original post.

Right now only a $100 million separates TDK and TDKR.

TDK has made $168 million more domestically when adjusting for inflation than TDKR.

Haters gonna hate.

You must really hate TDKR. Get over it.

Ah, the knee-jerk reaction of the Nolan defender. How I've missed it. As it turns out I don't hate TDKR. I hated TDK. With TDKR I was just indifferent towards it. It's a big 'meh' to me. I'm neither passionately for or against it. It's just like the TF movies to me in that regard. Batman Begins was the film I really liked.

Yes, we get it... Nolanite or Nolan Defender... blah blah blah.

That tends to be the knee-jerk reaction to every poster that refuses to acknowledge the accolades and acclaim of Nolan's trilogy.

I'll agree with this actually because there was nothing to indicate it would be this cultural giant. Lead up films ranged from big hit to average box office returns and nothing suggested it would bring in a wider audience than the usual blockbuster crowds, also helped that it was actually, you know, entertaining. TDKR I'm less surprised about although the lack of a known villain does kinda disprove the whole 'Ledger' factor some attribute to film 2 success.
