2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

batman fans happy that TDKR made 1 billion? why. will you get a sequel to TDKR?

There are many reasons -

* This is the first time that a Batman movie has made more money in overseas market than domestic market (If you exclude B&R.) It is always good to know that the movie is being appreciated more in other parts of the world.

* This is the first movie in the cbm trilogy to have escaped the "third movie curse", earlier the third movies were associated with dip in quality. TDKR is a fitting finale to Nolan's trilogy.

* TDKR proved that Batman can earn a billion dollars even in the absence of Joker, many credited Joker (and Ledger's performance) for TDK's success and many doubted whether TDKR could reach anywhere near 1 billion mark.

* It was good to see a movie cross 1 billion mark without having to rely on gimmicks such as 3D to inflate its earnings.

* It becomes annoying when there are some loud Marvel fans who never miss an opportunity to trumpet Avenger's success (I believe that Avengers movie deserved all the success it got) and downplay Nolan's Bat movies.
To defend a movie like TDKR is viewed by some as being an apologist. If earning 1 billion at B.O. shuts some then so be it. :o

I "sort-of" agree. $1 billion is not special anymore. Even for a 2D release. Domestically, tickets are ridiculously over-priced. Internationally, people are getting the fancy new theaters that Americans have been enjoying for over a decade. Right now, if you wanna shock people, get your movie to gross $2 billion. That's what Avatar did.

Interesting comparing 2011's top films to 2012's. Higher domestic BO, but lower foreign across the board.

Is 2012 the first year to have 2 films (much less 3) break 400 M domestic? Before you light your torches and storm the castle, remember, 2 of the films did it without 3D, and the one that did have 3-D did it by such a large margin that it's hard to hold 3-D against it.

Posted this earlier...

This year is just one of 12 to feature three films sell more than 50 million tickets domestically. That would put the films over $400 million in revenue when adjusting for inflation. Below are the adjusted dollar figures, followed by what they earned in the year of release. There were more years where two strong films crossed over 50 million but getting the hat trick is very rare.
1984, 2003, 2004 were the only years where it was close to having four films cross that mark. Looking at what the LOTR films sold, 2012 should be the first year where four films sold over 50 million tickets when The Hobbit comes out. 2012 just happens to have the perfect storm having TDKR and The Hobbit followed by two surprises in The Avengers and The Hunger Games.

I don't know about that.

I don't know about that.

Critically praised and financially successful. Am I missing something here?

I think we're past the whole speculation part of whether or not TDKR would succumb to the curse. That ship has long sailed.

SM3 has more positive reviews than negative ones and was the highest grossing(WW) Spidey film to date. Does that mean it also broke the curse?

...there's a movie called "2016: Obama's America"?

Monday (9/3) Update: Warner Bros. is now estimating that The Dark Knight Rises has reached $577.7 million internationally. Add that to the estimated domestic total of $433.2 million, and the worldwide haul is sitting pretty at $1,010,900,000. 2008's The Dark Knight took in $1,003,045,358 worldwide.

In China, rough numbers indicate that The Dark Knight Rises has managed an outstanding seven-day opening gross of $31 million with 5.4 million admissions from 4,081 screens. Official numbers from China are due tomorrow. In Italy, TDKR made $9.1 million over five days.

What I find incredible is that Nolan is second only to James Cameron for billion dollar hits.

In a world of Steven Spielbergs and George Lucases, that's a pretty major accomplishment.

To fans, no. Most of them hated SM3.

TDKR had a polarizing effect with fans, but I'm not seeing Batfantics spitting on Nolan's trilogy like Spidey Fans were with Raimi's franchise. In fact, the opposite is transpiring. Right now, TDKR is winning virtually every poll out there for best summer film of 2012.

So, devalue it all you want, but to many fans out there TDKR crushed the curse.

Probably got them off of BOMojo.

To my knowledge, BOM hasn't published info on ticket sales since that is something studios don't like the public to know. $400 million today is not what $400 million was 10 years ago. Ticket prices keep getting higher and higher and attendance keeps getting lower and lower. I can assure you that more preople went to see The Dark Knight than they did The Dark Knight Rises. So, when Shifty says that 50 million people went to see a movie in 2012, that makes me want to see a source.

Give or take a certain amount of error...

Ladies and gentlement, let's not forget to adjust for inflation.

Jaws - $1.9 Billion
Star Wars - $2.7 Billion
E.T. - $2.2 Billion

Jurassic Park - $914.6 million in 1993
Adjusted for inflation, definitely over a billion.

The Phantom Menace
$924.3 million in 1999
Adjusted for inflation, definitely over a billion.

Im one of the people who likes Spidey 3 and I admit it didnt break the curse. The word was TOO mixed for it and its reviews werent close to the first two which isnt true for Rises. Reviews wise spideys 60 range RT rating doesnt compare to TDKR's 87. The other 3rd comic book installments wish they had TDKR's response. I hope Iron Man 3 does the same.
