2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

I didnt expect dredd doing that low but then again most people I talked too, alot of them rolled there eyes at the mere thought of another dredd movie. One friend of mine said it looked almost Straight to dvd like in quality.

Which is a shame cause it was totally awesome.

WOM may help this movie yet.

I dunno has a movie ever opened this low then hit big from WOM before? I honestly think theyll be lucky enough make $25 million domestically at this pace assuming next weekend it drops to somewhere around $1.75 million.

The movie never had any WOM of mouth in the first place which was the problem and the number of people who saw dredd is too small to significantly spread the word around.

I predict a 60%+ drop for next weekend.

I think it'll be lucky to make $20 million let alone $25 million. After next week its theater count will take a huge hit.

It will be on Bluray by thanksgiving, mark it now, depending on how much of a hit the studio is taking.

Staying with this though, was the original so memroably bad that its burned that imprint into peoples minds and made most think thats how the character is?

Last few months haven't been good for remakes / reboots of old movies.

Total Recall, Bourne Legacy, Dredd all did badly.

I love it, cant stand remakes and its a great message message to hollywood that we want new ideas.

Meh. I'll don't mind remakes if it's at least good or add a different spin or take to a movie, like Karate Kid or True Grit.

Bourne Legacy isn't a remake or a reboot either. It's a sidequel/spinoff.

Dredd had no marketing and it does look cheap so of course it failed. Also there were no stars in it.

for all this talk of good word of mouth(including from me), something many aren't talking into account is that sure, it did well for what it was trying to be but what was that exactly?

For example how many people that loved Titanic really have time for something that excels at being this? The thing about Nolanman(I mean batman) is that it at least gave that crowd something, even moreso for the rest of Cameron's films. Dread was almost entirely exclusive to it's audience, it's loyalty to them is no doubt being reciprocated but that's about it. Dense guns and think boots, hooray. I laud this film for being one of the few to not do romance, I'm sure that bit it in the arse, even District 9 knew better.

Well, Sony is having a great weekend now, with two films at the top. Hotel Transylvania easily snagged the #1 spot at $42.4M (highest opening weekend in September) and Looper is #2 with $21.5M.

Granted, HT had a combination of ticket inflation and 3D surcharges that helped make it the biggest September opening, easily breaking Sweet Home Alabama's $35M opening back in 2002.

This is further proof to studios that you can make quality films, market them well, release it during a slow period, and people will come to see it whether it's in a peak month or the usual September doldrums.

I already know Hotel was gonna do it up. There hasn't been an animated flick out for kids since Paranorman.

‘Looper’ Opens #1 In China: First Time International Film Debut There Beats U.S.

http://www-deadline-com.vimg.net/wp...oper-chinese-poster-412x600__120930054905.jpgEXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that the Sony/TriStar Pictures, FilmDistrict, and Endgame Entertainment futuristic actioner Looper which was a co-production with China’s DMG Entertainment is setting records in that country. The Rian Johnson film pulled off a huge upset in China by opening #1 its first weekend with between $23M-$25M grosses. That’s on track to beat the U.S. opening. “If that happens, it would be the first time that China’s open outgrosses that of a U.S. open,” a source tells me. Endgame’s James Stern is cagey confirming this because there will be nothing official until Tuesday. He tells me: “While we don’t have the final box office tally’s because of the Chinese National Holiday, it looks as if we are #1 in that market and at least on par if not exceeding the U.S. box office, marking the very first time in history that China would be world’s leading market for an international film. A big congratulations to my partner Dan Mintz and his team at DMG are in order.”

Great for looper. Although, opening bigger in china also speaks to how the film performed on home soil.

If it's a cartoon, Hollywood views it as kiddie fare as far as box office take goes.

It's pretty much going to be buried now since every weekend from now until January something big is coming out.

It's pretty much going to be buried now since every weekend from now until January something big is coming out.

Every weekend save for November 30th and December 7th, but you're right on the money there.

Ice Age: Continental Drift is now the biggest animated film of all time at the international box office. The 20th Century Fox release has grossed $693.9 million internationally, pushing it past the previous record of $687.1 million set by Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Ice Age 4 now ranks in 8th place on the all-time international box office list.

Holiday box office show coming up. Trying to mull together how Hobbit will do stateside.

For Hobbit i'm thinking ( at least) 400 million domestic and 1 billion WW.
