2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

I'm basing some of it off Quantum of Solace's opening which opened at $67 million and considering increasing ticket prices and the fact that Skyfall has a lot more hype to it than QoS I think it can do big numbers.

Something tells me it won't be that good.

Shush you! :o

Its a damn shame that Argo wasnt number 1. Such a truly great film and a rather important one. I know some people might not have went thinking it was war propaganda but affleck directed a very honest approach where it kinda bashed both sides for there mess ups and how ignorant they both were.

It has a audience rating ( A Plus) meaning that it'll have good legs.

I honestly think it'll open lower than QOS.

Maybe, but I say at worst it opens at $60 million+, but I think it could do $80, $90 million, especially if the buzz from UK reaches here (since it opens 2 weeks before the US there).

If anything, the positive reviews will be the thing that will make it open higher. But really, it could go either way. Even despite the positive reviews, it could still open lower.

Sunday (10/14) Update: Taken 2 added $41 million internationally from 6,314 screens in 35 markets this weekend. The international total is now $132.8 million. Taken 2 has amassed $219.6 million worldwide.
2008's Taken made $78.9 million internationally and $145 million domestically for a total of $223.9 million worldwide. It's safe to say that Taken 2 will easily surpass its predecessor by next weekend.

So this means, Taken 3 is a go?

Taken 3: Liam Neeson takes his own daughter and has to kick his own ass in order to save the day. :o

What's left to take, aside from their dignity?

The biggest sensation on the worldwide chart this year is definitely The Intouchables. It has almost reached $400 million now. A French movie making that kind of money feels as sensational as anything James Cameron achieved

I'd be really surprised if Skyfall opened much better than the last film because the last film had tepid word of mouth. I think that it will be doing great if it even hits 60mil to be honest.

Im gonna say skyfall will make about $62 million, Its been 4 years since the last one and the last one really just kinda came and went without making alot of noise. but I could see it making 70 plus easily if people are bored enough and want to be entertained and if WOM is strong.

When do you guys think the Paranormal Activity series is going to start rolling downhill (in terms of box office) ala the Saw movies? I have a feeling this one may have hit the saturation point and it may disappoint. But I thought that about the last one, too.

Not for at least a couple of more movies. These movies have such a low budget that the opening weekend by itself is already a profit. They'll just keep milking it until something opens along with it to give it a challenge.

Try this :
Overall, the three Paranormal Activity installments have earned over $576 million worldwide on a combined budget of a little over $8M.

Hell even if these movies make saw money , they still are hugely profitable when you look at the budget.

Taken 3: Liam Neeson takes his own daughter and has to kick his own ass in order to save the day. :o

What's left to take, aside from their dignity?
Nah, me and my friends already figured it out...

By killing the Nice Coat hobo in Taken 2, Liam unwittingly angers the crown price of Armenia who declares war on him and his family.

Thusly, Neeson has to go in and overthrow the entire Armenian government, essentially conquering the entire sovereign state.

The end. :o

I'm not talking about profits. And my question was answered this weekend. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3550&p=.htm

The movie has made profits already, but these numbers have to be hugely disappointing to the studio. This was a huge drop from the last installment, and this series will end faster than the Saw series.

I wonder how cloud atlas underperforming would affect the wachowskis? They put a lot of effort into securing the money they needed to film it and it has a lot of star power.

After speed racer and all that i wonder if they'll still be given chances to helm big budget films?

They greenlit the 5th installment today and also started development on a Spanish version for Latin America. So... I doubt they're disappointed.

Come on...this was a MASSIVE drop from the last installment. Yeah, they've already made a profit off this movie. But this was way lower than even the modest projection the studio was predicting. A green light for a fifth installment means nothing for their expectations. Of course they're going to squeeze every last drop they can out of this franchise, but at this point, it's drying out much faster than they would've liked.

It will under perform...I have said that since the first trailer. That movie looks way too complicated for the average goer. They don't even have the same leads throughout the movie. It just looked like an epic bomb. I bet the budget is north of $200 million.

It's been said to have a budget of 100 million. But yeah, it will be extremely lucky to recoup even that. I do have a feeling this movie will do decently internationally though.
