I know it made over a billion but isn't that a bit of a disappointment for The Hobbit. It was the big big 3d release of the year. Part of one of the biggest franchises ever. And it gets beaten by 2 2d movies. If I were WB, I'd be excited but also disappointed

In general a billion should never be a disappointment, unless its budget was outrageous even by today's blockbuster standards. But yes one can easily say they expected a bit more from The Hobbit.

The numbers certainly are at least a little... underwhelming. 'Django Unchained' Becomes First Quentin Tarantino Movie Released in China

"Django Unchained" will premiere in the People's Republic of China on April 11, Sony Pictures said Wednesday. The antebellum revenge thriller will be the first Quentin Tarantino movie ever to debut in China.
That means the Chinese are in for a whole lot of Blaxploitation and Spaghetti Western references along with a healthy dollop of the old ultra-violence. The film has grossed $402 million worldwide so far, $80 million more than Tarantino's next highest grossing film, "Inglourious Basterds." It also earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for star Christoph Waltz.
Sony Pictures has handled the international rollout of the hit film, which is a co-production between The Weinstein Company and Sony Pictures.

The numbers certainly are at least a little... underwhelming. Considering it was released nine years after Return of the King and had an advantage of increased ticket prices, 3D, IMAX and some markets, like China, that has expanded rapidly in these years I for one was pretty sure Hobbit would be bigger. The same goes for The Amazing Spider-Man.

See I disagree about The Amazing Spider-Man. That was in the same realm as Batman Begins. It's a reboot coming off a terrible sequel. Controversial reboot at that. It was always going to do Batman Begins numbers, I don't understand how anyone would have thought differently.

Honestly, I thought that the 48 fps controversy hurt The Hobbit. There were a bunch of people saying that it looked terrible, etc. It probably wasn't the smartest move to put that format on a series where people already have a strong idea of what it should look like.

Yeah it can. We live in a world where a billion isn't really that big of a deal anymore. A popular sequel to a ridiculously popular trilogy and the "3d event of the year" everybody in the world thought it was going to do Avatar like business and yet gets bested by not 1 but 2 completely non 3d movies nor does it even top Return of the King. I'm the head of Wb, I'm disappointed in those numbers

It's certainly become less of a landmark to reach, but considering there are still only 15 films to reach that marker (unadjusted) it's no mean feat. Domestically it may not be as phenomenal as LOTR, but in no way are they, or should they, be disappointed in a billion dollar gross.
