2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

I believe as of last weekend TDKR was up to around $62.2 million from IMAX, which I think is only domestically.

I want to see more movies being filmed in IMAX. I hope this proves it to be a worthy investment.

Is this a philosophy class? Fans are happy that a movie they liked did well. No reason to question it, really.

Exactly. No one wants to see a film they liked get bad reviews or bomb out of the theater.

Definitely, it was a very odd question coming from someone who's been on the site as long as he has.

Look at films some people personally enjoyed here like John Carter for example, they take it pretty hard when they don't do well or bomb at the box office, despite them having no actual financial stake. It's human nature.

Honestly guys this petty **** needs to stop.

For real. I'm glad I missed this. You know who won. Us. We got two great superhero movies make over a billion and becoming a runaway successes, and shows that good quality blockbusters trump all.

The funny thing being both groups actually still contributed million of dollars to each of the other films they try to bring down.

I totally agree with Parker Wayne.
In the end we as CB fans are ones who should be happy that the 2 highest grossing movies on 2012 are CB movies which also have gotten favorable reviews.
TO downplay both their achievements is stupid.
If you wanna have a proper discussion on the BO performance , which certainly is possibly on this site , don't resort to knee jerk reactions which are typical .

2012's summer movie season has been a tremendous letdown.

My list of this years disappointing movies -John Carter, Wrath of the Titans, Battleship, Dark Shadows, Brave, Prometheus, Snow White and the Huntsman,Total Recall, Bourne Legacy and The Expendables 2.

You're not wrong. That is a fair question. Loved Dark Knight Rises. Some feel the same, others more mixed and some hated it. That's fine and what it should boil down to. If you liked it or not.

Given the circumstances I see why many are paying extra attention. No doubt, the Colorado tragedy destroyed its momentum. Was headed to a $185M 3-day opening based on its $30M midnight gross and topped at $160M. I'd say taking into account weekend drops and weekday numbers it lost $60-$80M total stateside. It was always going to topple Dark Knight worldwide.

Would it have bested The Avengers domestically? Hell no. But it would have been much closer and I'd wager cracked $500M. No way to ever know. But $440-$445M is great.

I know WB are praying that MOS does what this flick did.

I think MoS has a good chance at making 500m but it won't come easy.

if MOS is good i hope it will make enough money for a sequel. i am sorry but i can not accept Zod after SR. i need a new villain that i have not see on screen. if MOS is bad then i hope they take a big break from superman movies.

talking about BO i am more interested how much money can Avengers 2 make.

Bet the house it won't match or exceed Avengers' domestic gross. No way.

Yeah Avengers 2 won't match Avengers domestic. It's one of those perfect storm things. Avatar 2 won't match Avatar either domestic.

Well they got Whedon back, now they need to make sure RDJ returns.
Also, phase 2 needs to atleast hold to phase 1's consistency. A green caliber may hurt them.

As much comp as DKR faced compared to DK, it's release date probably played a part of this 1bill benchmark. They're has been almost nothing for me personally to watch since said film.

As for this summer, it goes to show that consistency trumps big highlights at the end of the day. This summer probably has the biggest and widest spread highlights ever(in terms of moolah), but it's being seen as a letdown considering all the other consistent crap it saw. Especially around Avengers time.

If superman get's the buzz of at least 300, it will be huge imo, given the context.

I don't know. It may not match the first Avengers' domestic gross, but it'll have a great hold if it's well-received. Probably comparable to Iron Man 2's retention -- 95-98% compared to Iron Man's domestic gross.

But I agree with Jamie... MOS would have to be a true break-out hit and be buoyed by terrific word-of-mouth. It's not helped by the mid-June 2013 release date where it's smack dab in the middle.

So you agree with me.......................................

What's with the talk of Man of Steel trying to pass The Avengers in the first place? I'm 99% sure that's not WB's expectations for this movie nor should it be any fan's honestly. The goal for MoS should exactly be the same for Sony with Spider-man, to reestablish a franchise with a successful movie.

Also, I think it makes $500 million worldwide easily. Superman is still very popular overseas and I believe this movie can definitely do $200 million domestic and $300 million worldwide easily if the movie opens to good reviews.

I don't think it's that bad a spot for MoS, especially considering that the competition in the weeks after is Monster's University, World War Z (a movie with many production problems), Kick-Ass 2, and White House Down for now.

And the only movie before it that is known is the ever popular M Night Shyamalan with After Earth (though it does have Will Smith).

Meh, dark's comes off as bitter as I'm sure he knows the answer (or at least, I hope dark knows). Why is any fan of a movie glad for it's own financial success? Emotional investment. It's not always about getting the sequel. Moviegoers love the high stakes involved with box office grosses, kinda like tracking a film industry version of a horse race at times.

True, but while June isn't a death sentence, it's still not May or July. Yet, it'll probably get a better marketing campaign than Batman Begins, and Nolan's name could help sell Man of Steel to the overseas audience.

Agreed, though I think with the marketing you have to strike a balance with what giving us a feel of what we saw in the trailer, and adding action to the marketing campaign.

They have to convince people that they're not making mistakes like with past Superman movies, while showing that Superman is not only a viable movie character, but an exciting one.

Absolutely.

WB has already pleased majority of fans, or at least attracted attention, with the footage released, but Man of Steel still has about a year before hitting theaters. They'll have to add more to the marketing in order for the non-geeks/general audience to be aware of the new direction for the character and franchise.
