31 Nights of Halloween...

Here's a hot take, the original Blair Witch movie does not hold up. I will always give it props for the impact and influence it had in horror, that's a given... but it's movie has a great set up that ultimately gives you blue balls. That's why I dug the new Blair Witch a lot more. It actually gives you a decent payoff and a look at the witch.

The creature in the movie Mama sort of resembles what I'd imagine the Blair Witch to look just in a freakier context with it being Blair Witch.

There's another movie also with creatures with similar look to this I can't remember the name of.

One thing I liked about Blair Witch is it took the first film's concept of people being trapped in the woods and went one step further with the people actually being trapped in another dimension with the witch. That concept is frankly terrifying and extremely hopeless.

Day 7:

I had forgotten how much I love this film. Not only clever but incredibly fun.
Merman scene bumps this to 9/10 territory.

Day 8:

Regret having that this one on my watch-list for so damn long but was finally got around to watch it.
Takes quite an unexpected turn and almost turns into a different film in the 3rd act but was more than a welcomed and brutal surprise.

Yeah, Kill List had one of the most unlikeable protagonists but was a good film all together.

I've seen clips of Cabin in the Woods and it's a bonanza for sure. That's on my watch list.

Our House

A damn good ghost drama. Anthony Scott Burns manages to take a more modern approach to the classic ghost films like Poltergeist where it deals with family issues. He did a great job directing it and the cinematography is exactly what you want in a horror movie. The cast was great and you can totally buy them as realistic siblings. It's pretty much a slow burn horror, but the drama keeps you interested. They also try to reinvent the pseudoscience behind ghosts which worked for me. Overall, I really recommend it. Between this and the Father's Day short from Holidays, I can't wait to see what Anthony Scott Burns does next.

Freaky Movies Premiering on TV in the Early 70's:
1) Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973)

*This is a little known movie that premiered on TV in the early 70's probably best played on a projector as high def TV may make look blurry unless a remastered edition available for 4K. This movie was later re-made in 2010 starring Katie Holmes.



2) Crawlspace (1972):

*There are 3 other movies completely unrelated to this (or to each other) made in 1986, 2013, and 2014. The 1972 film appears to be based off of a book published by Herbert Lieberman in 1971.



3) Bad Ronald (1974)

*Based on the September 1973 Book By Jack Vance




I'll admit to not having seen Crawlspace (1972) or Bad Ronald yet ever so may not be very good so word of caution. I just couldn't help but add them to the list based on their similar creepy nature, being TV movies, and time period they came out.

Night 11

23. Jaws (1975) dir. Steven Spielberg

"You're gonna need a bigger boat."

Thoughts: My favorite aspect of Jaws is the every man quality to the struggle. Honestly, it would be hard to find a worse group of guys to try and save Amity island from the great white, which turns this all into a big ole game of trial and error. It also amazes me how much of this movie I forget in between viewings. Still Jaws is Jaws. It will never get old, whether it the tense kills or the score that switches hilariously between horror and adventure.

24. The Shining (1980) dir. Stanley Kubrick

"I'm sorry to differ with you sir, but you are the caretaker. You've always been the caretaker. I should know sir, I've always been here."

Thoughts: Wait, are you telling me this Kubrick film was polarizing when it came out and that the author of the source material hates it? Well I'd never... The Shining feels like one of those movies that probably shouldn't work. Awkwardly stiff dialogue, the majority of the cast acts like they are on local cable access, there is very little plot and the movie just feels long. And yet, it's great. One of the best. I will never know how Kubrick knew what he needed for each of his film, but he always got it. Even at the cost of his cast's health.

Insidious

Haven’t watched as many horror films as I would have liked this past week, but I was able to sneak this into my schedule earlier today. For some reason the only one of this series I had seen was the second one. First one isn’t too shabby. Can see why everyone likes it so much. Can’t say I found myself all that invested though.

Also, not totally movie related, but I spent my night at Universal Halloween Horror nights. The Killer Klowns, Us, and Ghostbusters haunted houses were all pretty cool.

I just saw Re-Animator and Bride of Re-Animator back-to-back at a local theater showing for the month of October. Re-Animator gets a 9/10; Bride gets a 7/10. I love movies from this time period, back when everything used practical effects for all sorts of disgusting stuff! It was great! So much better than the CGI we see all the time now.

I'd seen the first before (and own it on DVD) but hadn't seen the second movie yet. Not as good as the first, but I thought it was still pretty good. And I definitely preferred Jeffrey Combs' performance in the first movie compared to the second—he came across more intense in the first movie and was such a scene stealer in it. Less of a scene stealer in the second movie, and a bit less intense, which IMO hurt the movie a little, but not by too much.

It was a bit jarring hearing his younger voice again before he got into animation—I didn't "discover" him until BTAS TNBA, JLU, and Transformers Prime.

Night 12

25. Ginger Snaps (2000) dir. John Fawcett

"Out by sixteen or dead on the scene, but together forever."

Thoughts: This one always gets me. If not for the gore, you'd think it was a made for television flick about the horrors of puberty, bullying, premarital sex, drug use, depression, suicide, and co-dependency. And yet with the relationship between the sisters at the heart of it all, it works. I don't think this is technically Katharine Isabelle's start as a Scream Queen, but it might as well have been. More of her later.

I just really enjoy this movie. And I'm creeping closer to catching up. If I don't go out later to watch a few flicks in theater I should be able to get to the double digits easily then.

Satanic Panic

A pretty schlocky horror comedy. It goes back to the old 70s style satanic cults with the red hoods, but it takes place in a rich white neighborhood. It centers on Hayley Griffith (who kinda looks like Alexandra Daddario) and she's pretty much the only one who acts normal. Meanwhile, everyone surrounding her are doing a campy version of a satanic cult movie. There's some good moments and it's shot really well, but it's ultimately kinda meh. It's the kind of movie made only for horror fans who will watch anything because it's horror related. Overall, it's just below average.

Creepshow (1982)

This guy, this guy right here scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. Lordy.

Stephen King as poor ol' Jordy is comedy gold.

A watched A Cure for Wellness a while back. I honestly can't remember when. My brother and best friend's reaction to it was all time great. I found it mildly amusing, while being try hard and mostly dull. They lost their minds though. At least with A Killing of a Sacred Deer, we had all the weird stuff for them to be baffled by. Not so with Wellness.

I totally love it, keeps getting better on re-watches. And as previously mentioned, it gives off major RE4 vibes.

Tonight’s film. King and Carpenter come together, two masters of horror. Another excellent Carpenter film that I feel is overlooked and under appreciated. Carpenter is one of my all time favorite directors. And as always with his films he provides another great score.

Doesn't reach the same heights as the first one but it's still a fun horror anthology film. First story is whatever but The Raft makes up for it with some truly horrific kills and The Hitchhiker is pure goofy fun.

Night 13

26. Freddy vs. Jason (2003) dir. Ronny Yu

"Kia, he has asthma!"

Thoughts: Freddy vs. Jason basically has four things going for it. Every second Freddy is on screen, Jason's best design, Kelly Rowland's character's death and the Katharine Isabelle shower scene. And yet I find myself enjoying this one, probably a lot more then I should. I still remember being in the theater watching this when it came out, and being utterly pissed that it looked like Freddy lost. I mean it made no sense. How could he lose, especially to Jason? The guy is afraid of flippin' water for Christ sake. But I guess they redeemed themselves in the end. Oh, and I love how completely inappropriate the score is for this film, along with the odd attempt to make Jason some sort of sympathetic character.

On a bit of a side note, does anyone know how Jason ended up being a fully grown man when he came out of the lake? Like how did he get the necessary nourishment to become a giant of a man? Did he meet King Triton down there and did he get on his program?

I first saw Part 2 as part of a midnight movie marathon a few years back and it instantly became one of my favorites. I like the 1-2 punch of the first 2 flicks together. Might throw on my other favorite next if I have the strength to sit through one more.

Jason's best design

Seriously, this is my favorite look for him. Not that I don't like his other looks (particularly 2 and 5), but this is my favorite design of his.
