Night 19
33. Oculus (2013) dir. Mike Flanagan (New)
"My name is Kaylie Ann Russell. The purpose of today's experiment is to prove the object behind me is responsible for at least 45 deaths in the 4 centuries of it's recorded existence."
Thoughts: Took me 6 years to finally see this movie starring Amy Pond, but I did it!!! This definitely feels like one I need to watch multiple times, because so much of it is intended to be confusing. That being said, for a film that basically takes place in a few rooms of a house, it feels a lot bigger then that. My one real issue with this one is the jumping around of the timeline. I get the idea and it does work for the most part, but because of how the mirror works, it can all get a bit muddled. I do get that is the intention, but I am not in love with it. That being said, another strong film from Flanagan.
34. Hush (2016) dir. Mike Flanagan
"..."
Thoughts: The first time I watched Hush, I really liked it. The second time I watched it, i loved it. To me, this feels like the budget movie you make before
Oculus, but I guess he did them in reverse for some reason. The movie basically plays out like Don't Breathe in reverse, but unlike that one that simply lives on its premise, this movie has a lot more to it. Kate Siegel is great as at home modern Laura Croft, and this might be one of the few films that is shot mostly in darkness, that you can actually see. The weirdest thing about this one, is it is the only one of Flanagan's films that I can't really see much of in Hill House.
35. Ouija: Origins of Evil (2016) dir. Mike Flanagan
"Do you know what it feels like to be strangled to death?"
Thoughts: A lot like Annabelle: Creation, this film takes the promise of the crappy first film, and turns it into a really nice little film. Flanagan doesn't reinvent the wheel here. He just makes a really engaging, really creepy, really fun horror flick.
