8.18 - Eternal - Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

I like the "fight" scene between kid Lex and kid Davis and it foreshadows how he views himself as the hero trying to vanquish the beast(superman or Doomsday)

What fight scene?
Oh wait, now I remember. Thought you meant a fight when they're adults :woot:

It wasn't Zod, it was Brainiac, when he went back in time to Krypton in "Veritas" and "Apocalypse". After Jor-El and Lara put Clark in his ship, Brainiac probably killed them and hid DD's genetic matter on the ship. He probably was planning to kill Clark and send Doomsday to Earth.

Clever! I'd been trying to figure out what was different this time, and it was staring us in the face. Davis doesn't show up until after those eps...

Exactly! That's why I'm probably a little more forgiving for the retcons in "Eternal." The fact that Brainiac went back in time means that it caused a ripple effect on the past with all the prophecies, Veritas etc. It makes sense that Doomsday's arrival would change this since we found out he arrived with Clark on the day of the meteor shower in "Bloodline" since technically this is an altered timeline.

Great theory RagingTempest!

I really like that angle and it would be really nice if that is how it's handled on the show (even though I get the feeling the issue might not be addressed).

EDIT (another thought):

It would be great if they had an episode with TW playing Jor-El and show the events leading up to Krypton's destruction. We could finally see Zod in the flesh and learn of his "Doomsday" plans and how being sentenced to the Phantom zone prevented him from carrying those out originaly.

Then when Brainiac traveled back in time he was able to finish the job....man that would be a hell of an episode.
They could have Geoff Johns come back and write as icing on the cake!

intresting but I like to see Kevin Anderson(the man who wrote Last Days of Krypton novel) write it. But it should be during season9 I guess.

I too still believe that the two headed monster still represent Lex Luthor not Davis Bloome / Doomsday
(Because in the early seasons of the series When Clark & Lex were best friends , they were like brothers .) According to the legend of the Kawatche .

["Sageeth is a friend of Naman who is said to be like a brother. The prophecy tells of Sageeth one day turning against Naman and becoming the "bearer of darkness". The two will represent the balance between good and evil. "]

However Tess Mercer interpretation of the two headed painting on the Kawatche cave of Sageeth is not of Lex Luthor but of Davis Bloome as Doomsday . Which is a unique twist in a visual way because visually the painting does represent Davis and Doomsday . However The Legend is more connected to Lex Luthor .

I guess debate is more of interpretation vs. Mis-interpretation "from a certain point of view" .

To quote Obi-Wan Kenobi from ROTJ

Luke: "Obi-Wan! Why didn't you tell me? You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father!"

Obi-Wan: "Your father was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed.
So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view."

Luke: "A certain point of view?!"

Obi-Wan: "Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." — (Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker)

^^ I totally agree with you. And if they someday explain that the legend was about Davis and not Lex that will confuse the heck out of every one. Since it was already clear that Lex was the one in previous seasons.

I think Tess is just getting the story confused. Her story makes sense because Clark and Davis are like brothers, but the fact they told this story in previous seasons says otherwise.

The stories like most legends were probably passed down and exaggerated through the years. The people who actually wrote the cave paintings are long gone, so all that's really left are cave paintings that could be different depending on how they're interpreted.

The story of Naman could definitely work for Davis as much as Lex, depending on who's interpreting them.

^^ Well yes of course you are correct, but would you not be upset if they change it and make Davis Naman? I know I would, since they've been feeding us with all the info that points to Lex. And we have been going around this long thinking that Lex is the real Sageeth, and now they decide to change it. No thanks.

I though Clark was Naman and Lex was Sageeth. But I agree it's all open for decision. some people said that Lex was sageeth, some could said Lionel and some could say Davis. It's all open for decision.

^^ You are right, I meant Sageeth of course.

Since it was always up in the air whether Sageeth was Lex or Lionel since day one, I don't think i'd be bothered. There's no evidence of it being either. It could easily be anyone. That's part of what made the caves awesome. is that they were a symbolic plot device.

For all we know, the caves could actually be about Jor El and Zod.

Or any number of Kryptonians that have been to earth given the smallville continuity.

I like that they're revisiting old plot points with a different interpretation.

Which is why I really think and HOPE that it will turn out that Tess is just miss reading it. The story works so much better if Lex is Segeeth not Davis.

But yet there is enough there to see why a character like Tess could have misread it to be Davis and it is a valid part of the story if that miss-reading is motivations for the characters action.

Yea i still in the mind set everyone has their own ideas on what is the real meaning of the caves and some might have the wrong idea going on in their mind. This is something that happens all the time in the real world when u are trying to interput anicent caves/etc.....

Good idea...I didn't think about him. I really enjoyed that book, Anderson
really crafted a great, well-paced story.

I'm looking forward to his Batman/Superman book coming out this May as well.

Thanks, bunches!

Sorry, it took so long to get finished, but I was on vacation for ten days right after the ep had aired and didn't get hardly any writing done at all while I was gone.

:D

Read it last night, another solid review! You definately justified an episode that had an overall mixed reaction from fans who either loved it or hated it. Your reasons for liking it was the same reason I did, while the retcons caused some continuity issues and plotholes, the acting from the cast was wonderful and the direction in some scenes like the flashbacks were well done. I realize the more I re-watch "Eternal", the more I enjoy it!:woot:

Yeah, I didn't really like it much the first time I watched it but the way it was filmed and acted and the deeper meaning of things I think made up for some of the WTF moments...

Excellent episode.

:D

Thanks.
