84th Annual Academy Awards (2012) - Part 1

This is interesting:

The Academy’s entire active membership is eligible to select Oscar winners in all categories, although in five – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only after attesting they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.

http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/about/voting.html

Apparently any Academy member can vote for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, etc etc. The only time members vote within their respective branches is during the nomination process (choosing the five nominees). In other words, I've had it wrong all these years.

GO OLDMAN :awesome::up:.

At last, the yearly BAFTA's posters of the films that's nominated for Best Film.

The posters are outstanding as usual. But my favorite is still the 2009's collection with its retro design.

I'm on track to see all 9 films this year before the Oscars. The first time I've been able to do it (came close last year).

Out of the 9 best picture nominees, I've seen all except for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

If I get to 8, I will also see that one, even though I know it's basically a propaganda piece.

If Oldman wins, I'm literally going to shout from rooftops, naked. :BA

I am so behind on seeing all the Best Picture nominees. Although I have seen The Artist twice already, because it was just that good.

I swore I wasn't going to see The Help until after I read the book, so I finally started it this week and I'm about halfway through it now and I'll finish it this weekend so I can see the movie.

I'm skipping Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close until DVD, because I just don't want to watch that in the theater.

The only other ones I've seen so far are The Descendants and Hugo.

Midnight in Paris should be on your must see list. It's fantastic

I've seen them all except Extremely Loud, and I'm just weirdly unmotivated when it comes to seeing that one. I mean, it didn't look good from the trailers, and then once the reviews came out, they basically confirmed that the actual film was indeed exactly what I thought it looked like from the trailers. I'll catch it on Netflix eventually, though.

So who's the Black chick that isn't Paula Patton and why is she relevant? I've heard of all of those actresses except her and Felicity Jones.

She delivered an exceptional performance in this:

Her name's Adepero Oduye.

Oh, so that's her. I remember hearing about that movie. That's a name I am going to have to remember. It'll be interesting to see what career path she takes.

I still think that Hugo will win the Oscar for this category.

Just knocked off #5 and #6 off my list: saw The Descendants yesterday, and War Horse today.

The Descendants was disappointing: great story, great creative execution and good acting almost torpedoed by a bad script.

The dialogue in parts was so hackneyed and unnatural, it almost ruins the film: "Hey, how is that real estate deal going, the one that involves your family's land and is worth about $100 million? The one that I am describing to you for some reason, even though you as a character should know it fairly well within the context of this story ..."

And the fact that 1st person narration is present throughout the first act of the film but absent in the remaining part of the movie is a glaring indication of lazy writing.

The War Horse is predictable, but is a good and well-executed movie for what it was.

So far, my rankings are: 1. Tree of Life; 2. The Artist; 3. War Horse; 4. The Descendants; 5. Moneyball; 6. Midnight in Paris.

Looks like a year where some fantastic movies didn't make the big category (Another Earth, Melancholia, TTSP). In any event, it looks like I can knock off #7-9 before February 26.

Anybody watching the actors roundtable discussion from the Daily Beast?

I love what Plummer said about Malick's films, saying it's pretentious crap. lol

is that the one where he said he would never work with him again and suggested he get a writer lol
