88th Annual Academy Awards

I'm really shocked that Inside Out didn't get nominated for Best Picture.
Why is it 8 nominations anyway? Shouldn't it be 10?

I'm not, the academy doesn't take animated movies seriously no matter how good they are. Even if it got the nom it wouldn't have gotten the win cause they think they wouldn't be taken seriously having a kids movie win their biggest award of the night.

Was JLaw really that good in Joy? It seems like she gets nominated regardless.....

Meryl Streep won't be around much longer. Hollywood has to groom a new one.

But she is wonderful in everything.

It kinda stings to see Mad Max in the BP list and not Inside Out. Inside out had an amazing creative story, beautiful world, wonderful characters, and tons of emotion. I wish animated films would get more respect than they do.

Lawrence is no Streep. Although she's following in her footsteps as far as constantly getting nominated whether she merits it or not.

I'm disappointed Benicio Del Toro didn't get a Best Supporting Actor nomination.

It's a lock to win Best Animated Feature if that's any consolation.

Another snub I forgot to mention earlier is that Straight Outta Compton should be up in that Best Picture list.

It would be an insult if Inside Out doesn't win Best Animated feature, though at the end of the day i am glad that it didn't get snubbed like The Lego Movie did last year lol.

I'm really upset that the only person to get any recognition from Creed is Stallone. Really?!

Yeah. I mean, I'll agree he stood out the most, but I think MBJ should have gotten a nom too. The film more or less rested on his shoulders. If he had been bad, or just average, the movie wouldn't have been as fantastic as it was. I also think some of the performances in Straight Outta Compton deserved to be recognized. And I can't believe Benicio Del Toro got snubbed.

Don't get me wrong; I'm happy that my two favorite films of 2015 (Mad Max and The Revenant) got love from the Academy. But when EVERY actor nominated is white (for the second year in a row) it's pretty obvious there's a problem.

I'm also surprised Straight Outta Compton didn't get nominated.

Nominations by numbers from the Distributors.

Some of the are subsidiaries like Sony Classics belongs to Sony and Focus Features belongs to Universal.

I'm surprised at no Scott or Del Toro being nominated, Damon being nominated which is great, same with Cranston. Some really jarring ones like Bale and the Room director, granted I haven't seen those movies yet.

I'm rooting for Stallone, The Martian (Goddard especially), Spotlight and Mad Max even though I didn't love it. TFA not being nominated was no surprise at all.

It's Leo's to lose this year. And Inarritu will win because making the movie was so difficult.

Am I the only one who liked but didn't love Inside Out?

You're not the only one. I thought it was a really good movie for PIXAR but it's nowhere near the greats.

I'm rooting for Anomalisa to win.

Me too. Anomalisa was splendid.

So this one actually isn’t a huge surprise, but yet again this year’s crop of nominees is dominated by white people. Creed director Ryan Coogler, Creed star Michael B. Jordan, Creed supporting actress Tessa Thompson, anyone of color from Straight Outta Compton, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez or Mya Taylor from Tangerine, Idris Elba or Abraham Attah from Beasts of No Nation—any of these would stand in fine stature opposite this year’s crop of nominees, and yet there’s once again a lack of diversity in voters’ choices. Of course the Academy doesn’t vote as a whole—these are choices made by individuals, and ones that are reinforced by studio campaigns and Oscar prognosticators favoring “safe” picks rather than bold choices—but it’s a reflection of a systemic problem within Hollywood, especially in a year in which we’ve seen such tremendous output from filmmakers and performers of color. Disappointing, frustrating, disheartening.

Honestly, Leo probably winning for The Revenant and Hardy getting his first nom for it both smack of "make up" recognition.

I wouldn't put The Revenant even among either of their top few performances.

I'm also surprised Straight Outta Compton didn't get nominated.

I just wanted to hear an old actor say that just once. Someone prestigious like Michael Caine

My guesses

Actor in a Leading Role
Bryan Cranston
Trumbo
Eddie Redmayne
The Danish Girl
Leonardo DiCaprio
The Revenant
Matt Damon
The Martian
Michael Fassbender
Steve Jobs

Bryan Cranston's role wasn't ground breaking or profound so he won't win
Eddie Redmayne. If the Oscars want to play it safe he'll win again but it won't be the big headline in the news tomorrow
Fassbender's role was okay but nothing to write home about.

Leonardo DiCaprio will probably get it so it will be a HUGE moment at the Oscars to talk about.

Actor in a Supporting Role
Christian Bale
The Big Short
Mark Ruffalo
Spotlight
Mark Rylance
Bridge of Spies
Sylvester Stallone
Creed
Tom Hardy
The Revenant

Bale slept walked through "The Big Short". They nominated him just because they could. Same thing with Tom Hardy.
Mark Rylance no chance of winning
Stallone will win and it will be big headline in the news the next day.

Actress in a Leading Role
Brie Larson
Room
Cate Blanchett
Carol
Charlotte Rampling
45 Years
Jennifer Lawrence
Joy
Saoirse Ronan
Brooklyn

It could either be Saoirse Ronan or Brie Larson. Jennifer Lawrence winning would be no fun
No chance for Cate Blanchett or Charlotte Rampling( Who?)

I didn't see the Big Short, but I can't believe Adam Mckay got a nomination over Ryan Coogler for Creed. That first boxing match was so well filmed and he did a tremendous job capturing the feel for the world the characters inhabited and obviously got a great performance from Stallone.

The Big Short looked so bad to me when I saw the trailer, is it actually good or is it just people like it because it's political and "important" although I don't understand how that is news to anyone over 25 considering we all lived through the housing crisis.

Was JLaw really that good in Joy? It seems like she gets nominated regardless.....

She really wasn't. It feels pretty much like an obligatory nomination at this point just because she was in a David O Russell movie for the third year in a row.

And on the topic of people who really weren't all that good but get nominated anyway, hello, Redmayne. :o

My girlfriend refuses to see that movie as she thinks Redmayne had no business playing the part and all the historical facts they played with.

As upset as I am by no minority men being nominated I am more upset that there are so few good roles for minority women and when a good role comes along its usually that of a slave, a house keeper, or chick from the hood. I can't even remember the last time a Hispanic or Asian woman was nominated and considered a serious contender for Best Actress.

She's not missing anything. It was awful.

Did anyone see 45 Years? That nomination came out of nowhere...

Have you seen Anomalisa? It won't win but it is a fantastic film both in craft and in the story it tells. It would be great to see the category opened up to something besides CG Pixar films.

Anyways

I hope as they did with Gravity the Academy gives Miller the award out of recognition that he did something basically no one else would or could do.

They've been much more open to Picture/Director splits.

That said it would be incredible for it to win picture. It won't but goddamn if something like Spotlight wins it will be ridiculous. Fury Road is basically the definition of "cinematic."
