88th Annual Academy Awards

They don't give statues to popcorn movies. As acclaimed as Mad Max was by critically it's still a big loud summer flick to the academy.

Yeah, it's not getting anything more than technical awards.

Theory of Everything was boring as hell to me, but come on...his role was not "decent at best" I'd say that about Felicity JOnes but not him by a long shot
Misphrased that. I meant it was a decent-at-best movie. His performance was great though, but it was the only highlight in a movie made to win Oscars.
Benicio and hopefully lead actress depending on the rest. Brie Larson and Jlaw will no doubt be nominated, but don't know about the other three spots.

Damn, supporting actor this year is crowded as hell.
Yep. You've got Benico, Samuel Jackson, Slyvester Stallone, Joel Edgarton, Tom Hardy, the Spotlight cast, etc...
Redmayne would have to deliver the undisputed best performance of the year for them to justify handing him two in a row. I'm talking sweeping all the precursors and leaving no shred of doubt.

Obviously I can't speak for the performances themselves as I have yet to see them, but it looks look it's Leo's to lose.

Period piece, based on a true American story, physical acting, the character having to overcome disability in the form of a bear mauling, revenge aspect with a child involved, awards pedigree, grueling and lengthy shooting experience.

It's all there. Unless the performance doesn't live up to the hype it's been receiving from early screenings, it looks like the stars have aligned.
Honestly, Leo's biggest foe will be the hype. Everyone has expected this to be his win for so long, if the role is any less than amazing, it could tank his chances.
Mara is going "Supporting" for Carol even though she is Lead. Shenanigans every year as always. :sly:

I thought Vikander is going Lead as well?
Shenanigans. It's always shenanigans.

How good of an indication is this as to how the Oscars will go?

How good of an indication is this as to how the Oscars will go?

Not much. A lot of these movies will be no where near the Oscars. The Academy voters are a bunch that likes to separate themselves. Golden Globes, BAFTA's, SAG awards and some of the prestige film festivals are the ones we should look at for indicators.

The Stallone sweep starts! :D

Wouldn't Benicio del Toro be under best supporting actor as well for Sicario?

Yes, he's going Best Supporting. He's got a decent chance to get a nomination to be honest.

That's two big Best Picture Awards for Mad Max.

At the very least, I think its safe to say it has a nom coming its way.

I said months ago Mad Max would have a shot at a Best Picture nomination if the field this year was weak. It's starting to look as if it may in fact be in with a shot. Long way to go yet. Would be a great year if all three of Mad Max, The Martian and Creed got nominated.

Martian is a likely nomination at this point, and Creed has a good shot if Warner gets its act together.

Yeah, Damon's scenes om Mars were artsy enough for them.

I saw Spotlight last night. Great film, and I could easily see that winning Best Picture; I think it's close to a lock for Original Screenplay, as not only does it have a great screenplay, it's the sort of movie that will be readily perceived as having a great screenplay.

Basically, it had a great ensemble cast but I couldn't pick out one standout star in it. And I agree with you, I can see it winning Best Picture and Original Screenplay. As I said in my review, it's probably the best depiction of a newsroom ever.

Eh, I'd say Tarantino's damn near a lock for Original Screenplay.

Eh, I'd say Tarantino's damn near a lock for Original Screenplay.
He's already won that twice, and quite recently, the second time. If Spotlight is going to be a major contender, as it looks to be, Screenplay is one of the most likely places people will vote for it.

Agreed about Spotlight. I saw it yesterday and there was absolutely nothing wrong with that movie. Incredible screenplay and amazing directing. Everything was absolutely on point. I can definitely see it winning Best Picture. It's the definition of what a Best Picture winner should be. It truly is the best in almost all the major category's to be worthy of them. It's not my favorite film of the year but it's just so undeniably well made I can understand why critics are praising it so much. It's really that ****ing great.

It made me wish there was an HBO miniseries with the same cast and crew.

I love how everything is so wide open this year. Even Leo isn't looking as so much of a sure thing at this point. Also loving Michael Shannon getting attention for 99 Homes.

Leo may not be a sure thing for a win, But I think a nom is a lock.

Unless SAG shakes things up, most of the Best Actress nods may be sewn-up already.

I kind of hate when actors or actresses are penciled in for a win long before there film comes out and it gets so much hype that when you see it finally it becomes a let down. I cant tell you how many times this has happened in the past.
