Most of the "Oscar-bait" stuff aren't the independents suffering. It's the Ex Machina's, Me, Earl and The Dying Girl's, the Cop Car's ect. These aren't issue films. I hate Oscar-bait and I think Tom Hopper is a bigger crime to cinema than Michael Bay is, but true independent cinema is amazing. The Oscars typically give awards to films that aren't blockbusters, but they aren't great cinema, either. They are often these awkward in-between films, that are bland and forgettable. If you go to a lot of serious film sites, they have a very similar opinion on the Oscars as you, just on the other end of the spectrum. The Oscars are safe, boring, ****.
I will say, the only two movies really worth a damn this year (so far) have been:
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- Ex Machina
One's a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster (or it attempted to be), and the other one is independent. And they're BY FAR the best that 2015 has offered.
... And neither of them will be nominated for Best Picture.
