88th Annual Academy Awards

Most of the "Oscar-bait" stuff aren't the independents suffering. It's the Ex Machina's, Me, Earl and The Dying Girl's, the Cop Car's ect. These aren't issue films. I hate Oscar-bait and I think Tom Hopper is a bigger crime to cinema than Michael Bay is, but true independent cinema is amazing. The Oscars typically give awards to films that aren't blockbusters, but they aren't great cinema, either. They are often these awkward in-between films, that are bland and forgettable. If you go to a lot of serious film sites, they have a very similar opinion on the Oscars as you, just on the other end of the spectrum. The Oscars are safe, boring, ****.

I will say, the only two movies really worth a damn this year (so far) have been:

- Mad Max: Fury Road
- Ex Machina

One's a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster (or it attempted to be), and the other one is independent. And they're BY FAR the best that 2015 has offered.

... And neither of them will be nominated for Best Picture.

Do you guys think Sicario will get nominated for anything, or will it get overlooked? I say Deakins will for sure get a nom but lose to Lubezki.

Best Supporting for Del Toro is a possibility and Cinematography nomination for Deakins. But he ain't winning bruh. Lubezki has it wrapped.

Benicio and hopefully lead actress depending on the rest. Brie Larson and Jlaw will no doubt be nominated, but don't know about the other three spots.

Damn, supporting actor this year is crowded as hell.

Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn is a strong shout and Vikander for The Danish Girl and don't forget Cate Blanchett for Carol.

I think Vikander will miss. Just my feeling.

It's a possibility but The Academy also might give her a nom based on the other movie in which she got praised for in Ex Machina. So if she's good in TDG and by all accounts the reviews say she is , then with two very good performances this year that might swing it.

Redmayne would have to deliver the undisputed best performance of the year for them to justify handing him two in a row. I'm talking sweeping all the precursors and leaving no shred of doubt.

Obviously I can't speak for the performances themselves as I have yet to see them, but it looks look it's Leo's to lose.

Period piece, based on a true American story, physical acting, the character having to overcome disability in the form of a bear mauling, revenge aspect with a child involved, awards pedigree, grueling and lengthy shooting experience.

It's all there. Unless the performance doesn't live up to the hype it's been receiving from early screenings, it looks like the stars have aligned.

I think Jlaw wins again. lawd.

If she wins a second Oscar this early in her career, believe me she aint winning another one after that for a long time. Nominations? sure, but they ain't letting her go to #3 for a while.

I think Stallone will win for Creed.

Are people actually speculating that Stallone could be nominated AND win?

The important thing is you take care of your trophy/trophies ! :funny:

Are they still pushing Vikander and Mara for Supporting? The Golden Globes wasn't having any of it and placed them back for lead but I'm not sure with the Oscars. If they go supporting then I guess one of them will win.

I think so too.

Mara is going "Supporting" for Carol even though she is Lead. Shenanigans every year as always. :sly:

I thought Vikander is going Lead as well?

Okay, if Stallone gets nominated and/or wins, I'll eat crow. :yay:

Nah, I'm still collecting that receipt after he is nominated. I don't know about winning, but it would be a snub if he ain't nominated tho. Believe that.

I just rewatched Mad Max: Fury Road, and boy that movie is quite something.

I do believe that it will be this year's The Dark Knight at the Oscars. A lot of nominations except the big ones.
