It's not just an Academy problem. It's symptomatic of a larger Hollywood studio issue.

If being married for ten years has taught me anything, it's that usually what you're arguing about isn't really about what you're arguing about. It's probably the underlying of a bigger issue.

This feels like a problem where the answer isn't 100% clear, and maybe there isn't one. At the end of the day we're talking about subjectivity, there's no right or wrong answer. If greater cultural diversity is desired it has to come from the top down, you can't expect the Academy to be voting for people of other ethnicities if those people aren't seen often.

Exactly.

I think you can look at from a pretty mathematical view.

Just look at the percentage of movies made by black directors or movies with black leads or supporting actors.
I dont know the numbers but it aint 50%.. not by a long shot.. so its totally normal that that is mirrored in the nominations..

So whats the fuzz about... You have to change what movies are being made and by whom imo.

It's also not ZERO.

This reminds me of a great episode of Master of None on Netflix. Basically Aziz Ansari is questioning why you can't have two Indian people on a show and the studio exec says because then people will see it as a "Indian show". But no one bats an eye when it's the usual while people being cast.

So for movies it's the same. Unless you're a Denzel or Will, a black guy isn't going to get cast in a lead role because then it becomes a "black movie" even though one of the biggest franchises out there right now, Fast and Furious, only had one white actor in a lead role.

Rampling and Caine both missed the entire point of what people are saying. No one has ever said that people should be nominated just because they're black, asian, hispanic, latino etc.

Funny to see Will Smith talk about passing on Django and Jackson (Me) give him slack for it. :oldrazz:
Smith's comments about winning was weird.

It seems like people forget asians and latinos are minorities that get the short end of the stick, too. Whenever this conversation comes up diversity seems to become "let's include more black people"

Asian and Latino Americans are sorely under represented in America but they generally seem to be less vocal about it than black actors.

Atleast there is awesome Asian and Latin American cinema industries. Outside of American cinema black people have not got many options. There is a few movies made in England, France, Nigeria and South Africa starring black people but none of those films have the reach of American, Asian and Latin American cinema unfortunately.

George Clooney, Rafe Spall and Michael Caine have all said Idris Elba should of been nominated.

The film and television industries bias against Netflix does them no favours.

Forget that noise about no minorities deserved to be nominated or they need to wait for old white dudes to acknowledge minorities exist.

Oh, how adorable. Ain't gonna change and better the number of diverse films being made.

I like that they're taking steps but yeah if the industry doesn't catch up and create more opportunities for the minorities and women, the new membership rules could actually end up hurting the female and minority members. If they can't find work in film within 10 years, then they're cut.

The upside for this though is it will (hopefully) flush out the older, out of touch members.

A bit random, but this topic always reminds me of this Roger Ebert clip:

90% of the Academy voters are 70+ year old males, Kv.

I wonder how many of those are not winners/nominees and not active in films? I wouldn't be surprised if it's a lot.

AMPAS membership is really weird anyway. Like, I remember when Rooney Mara was invited, her only "notable" role at that time was only her ~5 minute performance in The Social Network.

That is the exact argument though. People are complaining that people of a certain race haven't been nominated, while not even arguing the merit of the performances. If this is a complaint about how the film industry works, why not complain about that? That has nothing to do withe Oscars, nothing.

There have been PLENTY of people that have argued why people like Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, Idris Elba, Mya Taylor or projects like Creed, Tangerine or Beasts of No Nation should be nominated. They're out there, I've read a ton of them.
