9.20 - Sacrifice - Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

FRIDAY, APRIL 30

“SMALLVILLE” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET)
“Sacrifice” (CONTENT RATING TBD sptv050769) (HDTV)

CHLOE AND TESS ARE TRAPPED INSIDE WATCHTOWER — Tess (Cassidy Freeman) breaks into Watchtower, triggering an elaborate security system that Chloe (Allison Mack) installed, ultimately trapping the two women inside. Chloe realizes that The Kandorians are downloading information about from the Watchtower server, which prompts her to make a drastic move. Oliver (Justin Hartley) confronts Zod (Callum Blue) and winds up clinging to life with a “Z” scorched into his chest. Clark (Tom Welling) realizes Zod has given his soldiers super powers.... Kevin Fair directed the episode with story by Justin Hartley and Walter Wong and teleplay by Bryan Q Miller (##3X5270).

Based on this episode description and the title. I've come to the conclusion that Chloe Sacrifices The Watchtower base by blowing it up rather than having the kandorians steal the info they need .

Didn't one of the producers say that Chloe's Big Brother storyline culminates in this episode? I guess watching over everybody and keeping all that data at Watchtower will bite her in the ass when the Kandorians steal that info.

Oh, wow... this episode sounds intense!m

Sounds like a nod to DC Comics Infinite Crisis storyline. Maxwell Lord hijack Batman's satellite, the Brother I and uses the Info to destroy the Justice League by using their weakness against them .

Nice connection. I very much like the sound of that. I also like that they're forcing Chloe and Tess into a desperate situation together, given their more recent history.

nice zod/green arrow clip.

pretty good episode tonight. Will have a review up shortly on the episode. Also the promo for martha/perry return next week looks wicked.

it's getting really frustrating seeing everyone fly before Clark. :cmad:

Pretty solid episode, so much tension with Zod. It is pretty disappointing seeing everyone except Clark fly.

And did they kill off Amanda Waller?

Clark had that dumb look at the end. I wanted to shout "Do something!" to him. :cmad:

But overall, pretty good episode. It had much more Clark/Zod confrontation than I thought it would. Hopefully it was a nice little taste of what's to come in the season finale.

I.......really hated this episode.

I'll be in the minority, but I think everything after Absolute Justice has been a real let down. There have been a few bright spots, but in terms of an overall story arc, it hasn't been the least bit emotionally resonant. The Kandorians, except for Zod, haven't had any real personality. They are cardboard cut out characters used as a plot device. As much as I like the addition of Checkmate and Waller, they really haven't been used to the best purpose.

I spent most of this episode bored. I've grown pretty tired of the scenes between Tess and Chloe. Is there really anything these two need to say to each other that hasn't all ready been said? The dialogue between them is heavily repetitive of the dialogue they've had before. The other Kandorians are reintroduced again, except now they seem to regret following Clark, for which no reason is given. And then they introduced the pregnancy, where I went from bored to downright angry, because I knew exactly what was going to happen. The out-of-the blue introduction of this baby was such lazy story telling, that I couldn't believe they resorted to it.

I'm sure a lot of people are going to find the end scene with Zod emotionally powerful, but I found it to be incredibly cheap and manipulative. Maybe if the Kandorian had been introduced as a 3 dimensional character throughout the season, with a real interesting relationship with Zod, then it might have added up to something. But this just made me really angry. Nothing more then a quick way to push Zod all the way to the dark side in one episode.

I'm glad they are getting another season, because I'd really hate it if they were going out on this one. Really disappointed.

Clark needs to get on that ****.

No kidding.

Clark: I will stop you.

Zod: O'RLY

You're not.

The second half of the season has been pretty 'meh' overall. Even Absolute Justice was pretty silly.

But I thought today's episode was the best of the season half of the season; mainly thanks to Callum Blue.

However, it wasn't a good episode for Clark.

Stuart as a Checkmate Agent made me laugh.

I was happy this episode was devoid of painfully cringeworthy shipper moments. Imagine a full season with episodes like this, it would be a completely better show.

 It's painfully obvious Zod is gonna die in the finale now unfortunately.

Well tonight was episode 20 of season 9 entitled "Sacrifice" written by Bryan Q. Miller, Justin Hartley, & Walter Wong and directed by Kevin Fair. First off got to say it was cool to have BQM writing another episode this season with justin and who ever that wong guy was. They came up with a good script i think. Also kevin fair does some good work on the show.

I thought it was a very good episode tonight, we get a nice tess/chloe buildup on their characters, and how they are going about saving the world, clark with the good kandorians, and checkmate trying to take them all out. I think it worked out pretty well. The episode flowed pretty well i think. With pretty much 3 different storylines running through the episode. But it worked out pretty good.

I thought kevin fair did good job directing tonight. He had some good camera set ups and movments. Also the lighting and sets all looked great. So i think this was one of his better episodes over the course of his time on smallville.

BQM, Justin hartley, and walter wong wrote a great script. So much was jammed packed into the episode but it all worked. Like i said above we had chloe/tess trapped in watchtower, checkmate after watchtower/kandorians, and clark trying to help the good kandorians out. Each plotline intermixed well and it flowed good together. Also it was cool to see an actor on the show write for an episode. i wonder what justin brought to the episode? It would be neat if tom or any others next year help with writing for an episode.

As for the plotlines tonight i enjoyed them all. First we got some good stuff going on with chloe and tess trapped in watchtower and it getting taken out. Then checkmate still after tess, and then setting it sights on the kandorians. Then clark trying to stop all this from happening. I think this was one of the best episodes of the season. We got some good action, some good character developments and drama to boot. So it all worked out great in my opinion.

Also it was interesting they were going with a plot that faora got pregrant by zod, i wonder if the kid would have had powers at all. Plus they could have gone with the whole lor-zod/chris kent storyline. But it was sad faoroa got killed. But she had some great scenes with clark and then with zod.

As for checkmate it was pretty cool to see them in action again. Also stuart returning and being a member of checkmate was an interesting twist. i didnt expect to see him again. Also waller's scenes were pretty good. I hope that ending scene with zod burning down castle that waller isnt dead. I would hate to see her killed off now. I want to see checkmate last into next season. So hopefully next week or the season finale we know if waller is still alive.

Acting tonight was great all around. I think everyone was on top form tonight. Callum i got to say was at his best tonight as zod. With his growing powers, and hatred and all that. Plus him going crazy and all that. Tom was excelent as clark, he had some great scenes with the kandorians and with zod. He played clark pretty well. Allsion was pretty good too i tonight, we got to get into her head and why she is so alone and doesnt want to fall in love again. Cassidy as Tess was great too. She had some great scenes and showed some good emotion and drama in them. Justin as ollie was good as always.

Some other notes in the episode that was a wicked opening teaser with watchtower. I hope it comes back in the next few episodes/next season. i would hate to see the set go. Plus we need a base of operations for the jl. Also the breakout scene with chloe and tess was cool.

So all in all a great episode. I am really enjoying this season. Not many bad points at all this season and its been pretty consistant too which i like. Also the growing checkmate and kandorian storylines are moving great. I still hope we got more with checkmate/waller in the coming episodes. Cant wait to see how the last two episodes shape up this season. Also the promo for hostage looks great. Cant wait to see perry and martha again.

No kidding.

That was Stuart? I knew that guy looked familiar. I thought he was last seen working for Chloe?

yea i too was like was that stuart when the episode started, cause i thought waller called him a different name. But then while i was over at ksite and through the episode i relized it was him. But it was still cool to see him again(really hope he and waller are not dead with castle going up in flames).

As for this faoroa getting pregrant maybe due to being a clone and things going differently then on krypton she could get pregrant. To bad they killed her. They could have easily started up that lor-zod/chris kent storyline from the comics.

Zod is a pimp. Banging Tess and Faora at the same time!

It almost seemed like a cult how she was carrying his child. I found that interesting.

Personally I think she caved too easily though. She's very different from the evil Faora of the comics and Season 8.
