Fantasy A Harry Potter series for HBO?

Mark Strong now being in the running for Dumbledore makes me think that if there was any truth to Rylance being considered, they couldn't afford him. I like Strong a lot but I can't see him as Dumbledore. HBO/WBD has also been leaning on him a lot lately between Penguin and Dune Prophecy.

Mark Strong is Voldemort. You can't convince me otherwise.

That's going to piss off some people.

Lithgow would be cool casting, even if he's not British. Not that it matters to me anyway, I'm not touching this thing with a ten-foot pole.

Though sure, he doesn't speak the Queen's English, Lithgow's a great actor. Should this casting go through, this sparked my interest a bit more.

Love Lithgow, but I’m somewhat unmoved. Which is fine. Rowling’s persona has put any further Potter works into such negative territory for me that I’d much rather not feel tempted.

And honestly, the thought of Mark Rylance as Dumbledore had me feeling damn tempted…

I agree. Rylance was too good of a choice that would have piqued my curiosity but he was probably too expensive. I love Lithgow but I can't picture him as Dumbledore. He's also almost 80 which makes it all the more curious as to why he'd be game for a series that could potentially run for a decade.

Also I guess Rowling's "No Americans" rule from the movies is out the window now.

You do bring up a good point about Lithgow’s age, though. Even if he’s in good health, making it to 90 is never a given.

****, Richard Harris was only in his seventies…

The OGs weren't even British so it's tradition now

What I’m really curious about is whether they’ll have their Voldemort from the jump, knowing how sparingly he’ll be used for the first three years, or if it’ll be just like the movies where they really only land their guy by Goblet of Fire.

I forgot the guy who plays Quirrell did double duty in The Philosopher's Stone.

I guess there's always the possibility that they'd use him at the end of S1 and then give him a few seasons off before bringing him back for Goblet of Fire...if the show lasts that long. :o

They'd probably find a way to incorporate Voldemort at the Tom Riddle reveal. :o

I hate how invested I can feel myself becoming in this thing, but I’m actually a little interested to see how they fill a whole season with these stories. Even taking into account the desire to more fully adapt the books, I don’t think enough was ever cut to require several more hours per book, so I would think a bit of inventiveness is required.

Personally, kicking the series off by depicting the First Wizarding War coming to an end, rather than simply the “Dumbledore drops Harry off with the Dursleys” opening again, wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Instead it's an entire episode. :o

I'm not sure if I'll be watching this at all but I'm still curious as to how they plan on padding out Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets to stretch them out over an entire season each. There really wasn't much that was left out of either of the films and what was cut certainly wasn't important to the plot. The director's cut of Chamber of Secrets was almost three hours long and from what I recall the only "major" plot point that was left out of the movie was Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party.

How do we know it'll still be called the Sorcerer's Stone and not the Philosopher's Stone? :o

Imagine if Voldemort was more accurate to the books. :o

I really am caught in this thing’s gravitational pull bc now I can’t stop wondering if the show will play up the period aspects of the story being set in the early/mid 90s or if it’ll basically take the movie approach of “we’re setting this whenever the **** we’re filming it, okay?”
