Agent Carter Agent Carter General Discussion Thread - Part 1

Synopsis for episode five is up:

Looks like the Howling Commandos are appearing, except, apart from Dum Dum Dugan, they aren't the characters from Captain America - The First Avenger...

The Howling Commandos are some of my favorite MCU characters, so I'm a little bit disappointed they went with some of the other members from the comics.

Still, looking forward to the episode!

Edit: My stealthiness failed me!!! I was beaten to it by LTM :oldrazz: dang it!

I'm not so sure. Koenig specifically mentioned that Trip was the grandson of one of Captain America's Howling Commandos, if I remember correctly.

The Howling Commandos are some of my favorite MCU characters, so I'm a little bit disappointed they went with some of the other members from the comics.

Still, looking forward to the episode!

Hopefully this will be explained:

- Cap's Howling Commandos went their separate ways after the war. Dum Dum decides to create a new team of Howling Commandos and recruits Sawyer (played by a Black actor BTW), Pinkerton and Juniper. He retires from the Army and joins SSR.
- Falsworth and Dernier went back to the British and French militaries. Morita and Jones are likely still in the US Military.

It'll be interesting to see how the three new guys react to working with Peggy.

It's amusing that of all the heroic types in the MCU thus far, Peggy is the one really rocking the secret identity tropes.

In that aspect this show is more Spider-Man than all the Spider-Man movies combined.

Jacques Dernier was a member of the French Resistance, not the French military.

In the last episode, Koenig said Dum-Dum Dugan would be proud.
It's probably him.

I like the secret identity trope. Marvel should use it more often. I hope it's definitely in Daredevil, and I hope that Spider-Man retains that aspect if he comes into the MCU. I like how it creates tension and conflict for Peggy and how she has to take the brunt of things or needs to find excuses or make a quick getaway.

Agent Carter is my favorite Marvel show with Agents of Shield, why can't the president of the US do his special speech during the day while everyone is at school and work instead of ruining everyone's primetime session on ABC, CW, Fox, NBC, and the other TV channels.

More characters as potential grandfathers for Tripp

I think it's pretty clear by now that his grandfather is Gabe Jones. The first comment was vague, but Trip referred to his box of gadgets as his grandfather's and Koenig later referred to the same box as Gabe Jones's.

BTW, for those upset at the lack of Gabe Jones, I think there's a good story potential there. Perhaps not this season, but in the future. This show has had a conspicuous absence of persons of color. It also has chosen to focus on the discrimination Peggy Carter has received because she is a woman. But there is, of course, another big civil rights issue brewing around the same time. I would love to see the impact the return to "normalcy" has impacted Gabe Jones as he leaves the Howling Commandos to return to segregation.

I'll also add this: This story takes place in 1946. Next year, Jackie Robinson joins the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1948, Truman desegregates the army (well, at least orders it desegregated, it actually takes a surprisingly long time to go into effect). If, as originally stated, the plan is to have each season take place a year apart, they really should address it next season.

In the episode "What They Become" one of the Koenig brothers state that "Dum Dum" Dugan would be proud of the equipment Antoinne used, it really might be Dugan who is the grandfather.

During the series premiere of the new Marvel TV show, Agent Carter, a promo was shown featuring the return of Captain America’s Neal McDonough as Dum-Dum Dugan, one of the famous Howling Commandos, but it wasn’t certain for what episode. Marvel released today their synopsis for the fifth episode of the show titled “The Iron Ceiling,” which will feature McDonough as Dum-Dum,, but also featured in the guest list are three new Howling Commandos.

Leonard Roberts (Heroes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has been cast in the role of Happy Sam Sawyer; Richard Short (666 Park Avenue) will play Pinky Pinkerton; and James Austin Kerr is signed on to be Junior Juniper. All three characters are Marvel Comics characters and actual members of the Howling Commandos. While we don’t have any descriptions on how the TV show will be interpreting these characters, here is a brief descriptions of all these characters from the comic books (these details are not from the TV show).

Samuel “Happy Sam” Sawyer: Member of the British Commandos after being assigned by the U.S. Army, Happy Sam (nicknamed due to his very serious attitude) was trained in parachuting in 1940 by “Finley’s Flying Circus” in Britain. He ends up becoming an organizer and commanding officer for the Howling Commandos after being deemed as unfit for field missions after getting wounded in North Africa in 1942.

Jonathan “Junior” Juniper: Junior was one of the founding members of the original Howling Commandos team and was also the youngest member in the whole group. His death became big during the 1960’s, when it occurred in Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos.

Percival “Pinky” Pinkerton: Coming from a rich background with some of the top military academies in England, Pinkerton ends up replacing Juniper after he dies in the Howling Commandos series. After losing his passion for being in the military and going down a dark path, Pinkerton ends up enlisting for World War II and becomes a private commando.

Obviously, there are already a few noticeable changes with Sawyer, who is now being portrayed by an African-American actor, not to mention the fact Juniper is still alive while Pinkerton is around. There will most likely be a few other differences as well.

The question that comes to mind though is what do these additions say about the Howlers we saw in Captain America: The First Avenger? Hopefully, the Howling Commando-themed episode will give viewers and fans of that group in the Marvel Cinematic Universe some updates on some of those Howlers.

Only time will tell. In the meantime, here is the brief synopsis of “The Iron Ceiling,” which was written by Jose Molina and directed by Peter Leto:

Peggy is finally trusted with a mission and calls upon her trusted Howling Commandos squad for backup. But her cover could be at risk when SSR Chief Dooley also sends Agent Thompson with her, on “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” Tuesday, February 3 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Marvel’s Agent Carter will be back with new episodes on January 27, 9/8c on ABC.

The official synopsis of the fifth episode has a misleading word "trusted." Unless the three new ones had worked with Peggy during the war how could they trust her? The only way they can is if Dum Dum tells them that she's more than just a pretty face.

This is the one episode I look forward to seeing the most because I want to see what happens to the other four (Morita, Jones, Falsworth and Dernier) and why they were not available for the mission.

I thought the description says her boss is trusting her with a mission and she calls on the Howling Commandos for backup.

So that probably means that she's worked with the three new Howling Commandos before.

.

i think the evidence might be in majority towards Gabe Jones, but it hasnt been confirmed as yet, and thus all options are still on the board especially since the Howling Commando is a grandfather and not a father

^ Yeah, I was misremembering a line which I thought made it clearer.

So that probably means that she's worked with the three new Howling Commandos before.

Dunno. It's possible. Or they just know Dugan.

Watching episode 3 with my brother, I think he nailed it when he said this isn't an ABC show. Far more refined, far more delicate then the vast majority of network television. There is real meat here. And yet they continue to promote it in the most blunt, nausea inducing ways. What at the commercial or "next week" spots would make anyone looking for good television watch? Promoting it as a television event, like it is one off you can catch later doesn't help either.

This is the first show in a while that if it doesn't get renewed, would break my heart. So I am hoping, heck praying, for the best.

This show has been really great in every episode so far. I agree that the promotion hasn't been great though.

I think the Asian Howling Commando was in the first AOS episode this season.I figured at least he would be in this show.

I frankly can't see why they can't get the whole original team back. It's not like they were top list actors commanding a huge salary.
