I'm cool with 8 episodes. Not that I would mind more episodes; after all, more Hayley is a good thing. But a tighter story arc with less filler is a good thing, too.

If the show does well and they're happy with the product, they can always extend the season. They've done that in the past.

maybe the AoS episode after the Ag,Carter finale can feature Hayley warning about some threat from her deathbed

That's only a couple episodes less than an average season of Game of Thrones (and no one complains about that show's length). As others have said, it cuts down on the boring/tedious filler. Plus, if the show is successful, then they could easily increase the episode count for season 2.

I think people underestimate how hard it is to fill 22 hours of programming. That's a big part of why shows were always so formulaic. More and more stuff is moving to shorter seasons and it's paying off big time quality-wise.

I will always prefer quality over quantity.

True Detective was fine with 8 episodes.

MCu offers quality and quantity together.. so the more, the better!

I think it's better to think of this as a sort of miniseries with one continuing storyline rather than a shortened episodic season.

Well, that's how every series should be, I believe. The episodic nature of shows like CSI works for networks, because that way they can gain new viewers. But some shows can't explore their full potential that way. I don't know if I'm explaining myself correctly, but you must know what I'm talking about.

It will be so cool to see the early days of SHIELD and to see it through the eyes of Peggy. Haley Atwell is so talented in the role.

I'd also love to see more of the Zodiac group, since we know they exist in the MCU thanks to the one-shot. In addition, it would be great to incorporate the beginnings of the Cold War and show SHIELD assisting the defense against the Soviets. Maybe the Zodiac could be involved with running a spy ring for the Soviets, and Peggy has to take down the spy ring. Of course, the Zodiac aren't communists, so they would be involved purely for money, not for politics.

Yeah, you're totally making sense. I agree that it depends on the type of show and the purpose of the show. Even though it got a lot of vitriol thrown at it early in the season, I think AOS struck the right balance. With 22 episodes in a season, there are bound some stand-alone feeling episodes, but even those built towards the whole. It mirrors the nature of the MCU, in a way.

For Agent Carter, it will be a much tighter ride, and I would imagine that the first episode will set up the problem that will be dealt with in each subsequent episode, with little or no stand-alone episodes.

I wonder if it is only 8 episodes to better fit in the mid-season break of AOS. I was really scratching my head at a potential 13-week break. This makes much more sense, even though it is different than what we had heard before.

13 weeks isn't so unreasonable, provided AoS didn't take any other breaks. They're starting in August and ending in May. Depending on exact start and end dates, that's probably at least 35 weeks. It also probably wouldn't feel so much as a break as a cutaway storyline since there's no time of repeats or non-Marvel shows.

That being said, I'm fine with this. It'll be an "event" series, more or less. Although I'm sure we'll be gouged on the DVDs when they come out.

Cool news. I'm surprised that Markus and McFeeley aren't writing it. I assume they'll still be involved writing some episodes, or the overall story (which I think they've done already, right?).

They were writing the debut episode.

I assume they will do the first episode and will work as consultants, they have a lot of work for Marvel right now, Quesada said they are really happy with that duo, they have lots of work, he didn´t say what they are developing, but he confirmed this duo of writers are making Cap3 and other stuff for them, so it is not like they have all the time to delve completely in one tv show.
Which BTW, I´m happy it has short amount of episodes, not comparing this with Homeland or GoT, but those shows are short and they put everything in the few episodes they deliver, to later have viewers anxious for the next seasons. So I hope Agent Carter will air strong with 8 good episodes and will be picked up for another season.

I hope they're staying in touch, though. With eight episodes, it's more useful to have a small writing staff and strong overall focus. In other words, everything should be planned out like a book rather than farming out a story idea to a writer to run with. And the impression I got was that this is Markus and McFeeley's baby.

So will this show run for multiple seasons, or is it more of a one-off?

Not sure if that's known/has been stated yet. They might wait to see how it initially does before they make that decision
