Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents of SHIELD - 3x02 - "Purpose in the Machine" - Discussion Thread

Swiftfox, Yeah now I am curious what he knows about Inhumans he suddenly got very quiet about the subject.

Yeah, I do love Bobbi more and more.

Heretic, yes and I think Daisy was affected by the vibrations that were used to open the portal rather than that it would affect any inhuman. So I am wondering what all the fuzz was about, cause right now I am like.... Eeh that was all?

It's almost like they changed course post-season. Maybe the big guys at Marvel stepped in and were like "yeah, you guys better not be trying to cover anything even remotely important on this little tv show." Instead, it seems like they are going to tell the "SHIELD are good guys and then there is a second group who are also good guys but serve as antagonists for the team" story that they've already told with the US military and Nu-SHIELD.

Theoretically...there's no reason to worry and they'll be addressing this planet again soon.

Well I can imagine that before they wrote the end of the season they had pitched the idea of the new season to the big guys at marvel to make sure they had their approval. At least that is how I imagine it works, that they would have gotten the all clear for the end of last season before they shot it.

I am curious to see what they will do, I would have liked to see more of simmons on that other planet but I also glad they did not drag it out for too long and got her back quickly.

They best give us flashbacks of Simmons time on that planet/moon or whatever it was during the 6 months that she was gone or they shouldn't have even bothered sending her there for such a long period of time in the shows timeline.

The show has been awesome this season so far. I'm glad that Simmons is back, but honestly I thought they were going to keep her stranded there for a little while longer and have a huge chunk of the first half of the season be "The Search for Simmons". I'm hoping we see flashbacks from her point of view on that planet.

How could we not see flashbacks all season? There have been a couple of things I thought they would drag out but have already hit so that makes me think they really have some good storylines planned out for the season. :yay:

Eh...I'm just bitter that it seems like we're getting a retread of the same story they've already told twice, when SHIELD vs Nu-SHIELD would have been a great story to save for the Civil War tie-in.

Not to bash this episode...I liked it more than last week. Ward instantly makes every scene more interesting.

Good episode. Ward is just awesome as a bad guy now and the ending went hard on the feels and tension. Good stuff.

I agree. Awesome episode. There were lots of little comic/MCU references, also.

I'm really glad they didn't go with the obvious cliched "May's Pregnancy Secret" plotline. I was preparing to cringe. The writers are more clever than I give them credit for.

Bloody hell... Honestly thought we were going to get another heart-destroying FitzSimmons moment when the hands started slipping... Fitz is a ****ing badass/insane lunatic for pulling a Leeroy Jenkins-style move like that... (cool reaction from Hunter when May told him BTW)

When Andrew arrived, was that the Zephar One or the Helicarrier behind them?

Macks 'Yeah' after the subwoofer line.... Hilarious.

May lost her mojo for a little bit. Glad she's got it back, though I wonder if it's going to be May V3 (aka, a mix of before & after Bahrain)?

Also, was it just me or was the actor playing the Asgardian bloke looking noticeably thinner than his last appearance?

Didn't he have a British accent in his first appearance as well?

He did look thinner I agree. There might be a reason for that?

I think I am going to love hating Ward this season.

He was one of the best things about Ghostbusters 2.

I enjoyed this episode so much! Some big picture talk from the shrink and Daisy that illuminates where the group is at the moment, some movement on the Hydra front..and I'm kinda pleased to see Strucker junior. Interesting that its just him and not his sister too. I guess he's considered a stronger character since he went solo after she died. The reference to his father Werner Von Strucker dying ignominiously was puzzling, I guess the Baron is his grandfather? I'm curious what all those people think they're fighting for, though. I'm ready for Ward to fake-die down a tall cliff at this point.

Daisy refers to the shrink not okaying ANYBODY, so who else do they have locked down? Why the focus on Melter, who I am unaware of being anything important? Speaking of important, I see foreshadowing of Daisy's becoming Director...I'm not happy about that. I also think Coulson's being too open about secrets, telling Hunter before he goes Lone Wolf on Hydra about the Asgardian. Its a spy agency, learn to keep quiet! Fury was fanatical about secrecy, but notice how many of his stuff was still usable after SHIELDs collapse. :/

The Asgardian's interest in Inhumans is ominous. Remember how Lady Sif was all in agreement with the Kree to destroy Inhumans? Fortunately, this Asgardian is the equivalent of a weasel sneak-thief and can be bullied.

On the Kree front, I wouldn't be surprised if the end-point of the monolith gate was a prison planet of sorts. They show up a lot in cosmic Marvel, which is where the Starjammers got their members. It feeling likely from a storytelling point of view, that somebody on that side will hunt Gemma's trail to the closed gate, and realize that there's been a breach. Cue the galactic bounty hunters and eventual discovery of the mass Inhuman outbreak on planet Terra.

I'm a little disappointed Simmons is back so fast, but it was damn nice to see Fitz be a Big Damn Hero and bring her back, instead of getting another heartrending cliffhanger. Simmons will be the one recovering for months now. We'll see how Fitz handles it. I think I'm okay with them being together now. <3 They're completely different from where they started, in terms of experience. You could actually see both of them on field missions.

Maybe the asgardian heard stories about the kree's living weapons. Perhaps the kree tried to use the Inhumans once before against the asgardians. It reminds me of the Inhumans mini from 2000. The kree come back to earth to take the Inhumans into space. The kree then tried to use them as weapons. I always thought that comic would be a great introduction for the movie version of the Inhumans. It ties them into the kree and the cosmic side as well or something similar.

The guy we saw WAS Werner von Strucker, son of Wolfgang von Strucker. Werner is his name not his father's. Also, it seems you're thinking of Andreas maybe?

Ward has become such a great villain. I'm going to hate to see him get killed soon. I'd rather he become a big enough deal to be worked into the comics and just stick around as a bad guy for the long haul.

A HYDRA operative named Agent Ward appears in the Secret Wars storyline Hail Hydra.

Strucker Jr. is Werner, his father is Wolfgang. Ward even said that Wolfgang von Strucker was one of HYDRA's greatest leaders (which is very strange because he had maybe ten minutes on screen time) but then he died a meaningless death (killed by Ultron).

BTW, did no one notice that Ward brought tacos to Werner just like John Garrett brought tacos to him?

I was a bit confused why Randolph didn't contribute his strength when they needed to lug things around to rebuild the machine, or keep hold of the cable.

Very good episode, in all. Glad they didn't drag out Simmons being missing.

A good episode.
Nice to see Ward again, I didn't expect the kid to be Werner.
Surprise too that Simmons is already rescue, there's probably still a lot of thing to tell about what she saw on this planet.

Excellent episode with no major plot holes that jumped out at me, this thread needs a ratings poll.

Yeah, but it still had her off the map because her relationship didn't work out, causing her to run home and take care of her father as if to prove she can handle domestic, 'normal' life. It wasn't too painful since pretty much everyone called her out on it, but then again everyone who called her out on it and eventually sparked May into returning to action all happen to be men. And her return wasn't for the sake of Simmons, Bobbi, Daisy, SHEILD, or her own realization that she doesn't need to fit into this normal lifestyle to be happy but rather about getting revenge on a guy who slept with her and then turned evil. So that ha a lot of unfortun-

Oh who am I kidding? A season arc of The May & Hunter Cross Country Revenge Road Trip. Oh I am so there. I'll miss May and Coulson's interaction, and Hunter's relationship with just about everyone, but it gives them something to be off doing so the main plot doesn't get too full and it hopefully features hours of May kicking the crap out of rich, spoiled nazis. Merry Christmas!

I'm really loving Mack as well. I mean, I already loved him but every time he's on screen it's just a reminder. I love his interactions with so many of the characters, and of course this season is giving him and Daisy a lot of time together. We've seen a few glimpses of Bobbi, Mack, and Hunter which is nice since they are sort of personal friends. We've even got to see him with Coulson, although not as much as I would like.

What I'm really missing is his old relationship with Fitz. Obviously it would have changed due to Fitz's changing in his obsession to get Simmons back, especially when Mack otherwise has his own mission objective to see to. These two seemed to have had a solid friendship and now it's just a quick mention that Mack wouldn't even talk with him. Also, while it's been impossible until this point I can't wait to see how he gets along with Jemma. Will this experience drive her further into her animosity against all alien related technology and people potentially leading them to form a sort of alliance. Or will her natural curiosity be put off by Mack's strict "no messing around with alien junk" policy?

I'm kind of worried what their plans are for Jemma at this point. I don't want a repeat of Fitz and Skye's various emotionally broken recoveries with the inevitable closing off, trust no one attitude while deciding you are useless to everyone. Not that that is unrealistic, I would just like to see a variety of reactions by different characters. Coulson and May almost dip into that territory themselves, barely no qualifying since instead of going useless they through themselves into work (a habit Fitz seems to have picked up). From what we've heard, Bobbi runs, and apparently Hunter is more likely to deal with the situation with alcohol, bitter sarcasm, and (aftera few hours of complaining) finally guns.

It was a good episode. Love how they aren't trying to drag things out and instead try and cram lots of stuff into each episode. Next week looks good as well

Excellent episode. I see the monolith as just another mcguffin to strengthen the bond between Fitz and Simmons. He risks his life to save her from whatever is on the mystery planet; Yeah, she'll drop the L word on him now. I'm also pretty certain we'll see flashbacks of what happened in the months she was on that planet. I mean she had to find food and water somewhere on the planet.

I had to explain to my wife why I was laughing at the "I brought tacos" line. To me, the best one-liner of the episode.

Not a plot hole per se… but a technical error: “Carbon dating” couldn’t determine that the sand was a billion years older than Earth. 1. Radio metric dating works best on igneous rock - dating “sand” is highly problematic. 2. Carbon dating only works on organic material (bone, wood, cloth, etc.) - not sand. 3. Carbon dating only works on (organic) stuff that’s no older than about 60,000 years. For much older rock, a much longer half-life decay rate is needed. Bobbi (a scientist, apparently) should have referred to potassium-argon or rubidium-strontium dating. :word:

But I agree that it was a good episode. ;)

I fully agree - great episode. How much better is the series right now comparing to season one... I was pleased that they decided not to pull the story of unsuccessful rescue - it was really refreshing... Concerning FitzSimmons dynamic - they seems to be the major (with maybe small exception of Daisy/Lincoln) a "romantic" couple of the show thus I would expect development in this area. There is a lot to be digged from this absence of Simmons - I would not expect Simmons to turn to be a "bad girl" of the show (one Ward is enough - although he is not technically a girl) but troubles are likely....
