All Things DCEU News, Discussion, and Speculation - Part 2

That trailer didn't look very interesting to me. A shame, they really don't want to go 4 for 4.

Why is it tied for lowest Cinema Score in the genre? Why are politicians using it as a joke during Presidential broadcasts? Why does it have a pultry 26% approval rating from journalists and film pundits? Why is it's audience RT score lower than 90% of all films in the genre including every MCU films and 8/10 X-Men films, and the lowest for any Batman film not directed by Schumacher?

Ultimately, WHO CARES?? This film, this whole franchise, will pretty much always have supporters and detractors. They're doing just fine, we will see what adjustments are made. Those of us who appreciate the film have no need to justify any of it. Too bad it's not made for everyone. If anything I get the "art film" analogy. And I really enjoy it. BVS is very rewatchable for me. I'm glad it's not a "family film" i.e. kid safe.

Whenever some talks **** about the DCEU my response will be...

"Yeah, well it's not for everyone."

It was a perfectly serviceable trailer, but it personally did nothing for me. Maybe due to previous experience with trailers for the other DCEU movies that promised so much, but delivered so little. There was nothing particularly fresh or innovative in there. It all felt a bit same old, same old. I fear Logan's brilliant levels of orginality may ruin most other CBMs for me this year.

All the same, nothing wrong with it either. May in fact be the exact thing the DCEU needs to be a hit with the masses.

What happened to comic book movies is what happened to comic books. They were originally aimed at 8 year olds. The comic book reader steadily got older and the story given to them became broader. Same thing with movies. But now some automatically reject comic book movies not grounded in reality and world weariness as inferior.

What a weird thing to say. Comic book movies are not "automatically" rejected by anyone. They are judged on individual merits.

I love the bright colors of Themyscira and the humor and action we've seen. Even if this movie is somewhat dark I hope it's not as relentlessly dour as BVS.

Batman v Superman may have performed less than Warners hoped, but it still made a lot of money. I think plenty of people, myself included, expected it to join the billion dollar club simply because it had Batman and Superman in it. Ultimately what we're talking about is a fairly grim sequel to Man of Steel (not a massive money-maker either) in which Batman brands sex traffickers, Superman dies at the end, and the audience has to watch a 90 minute political thriller before they actually reach the fight scene they've bought the ticket for. I love the film and I've watched it numerous times, but it's not a fun, crowd-friendly kinda film, and it's unfair to expect it to appeal to the masses as much as, say, Civil War.

Precisely. To judge how good a film is by citing mass appeal is odd to me. Of course MCU movies are liked by the masses at large. They're made to be four-quadrant movies. Watered-down, pandering, kid-friendly fluff.

Still looking forward to Wonder Woman. But the trailer did not increase my anticipation.

Tarantino's movies aren't four-quadrant movies, and yet they are universally praised and celebrated because he's got an audience in mind and he succeeds with that group.

WB is in the business of spending billions of dollars on huge blockbuster superhero movies. They are supposed to appeal to as many people as possible. Even if you want to go with the argument that BvS targeted a specific audience... what audience was that? Because I can't think of a single demographic or fan community that is fully on board with BvS.

I don't think they were targeting a specific audience as much as they were telling the story they chose to tell. "They" being all involved. I do think they should accept the divisive response, they are the ones who set it up the way they did. They, they, they. Lol

I personally will take this by FAR over the narrative choices in the TDK films. I disliked Bruce's arc in those films as much as many disliked the DCEU Batman so far. I just never could bring myself to stay harping after it on the boards. People like what they like.

They were definitely targeting an audience. Every film does. Especially ones that cost $200 million+ to make.

Yeah, you don't do a $250M movie and try and reach a "niche" audience.

Exactly. This was my #1 complaint about MoS and I really liked MoS, believe me, but I didn't think it was a good film for a wide audience. I thought it fit more with a version of Superman that hardcore fans would really enjoy, but not everyone.

I really liked that the new Wonder Woman trailer didn't spoil anything. Keep it that way lol I want all the surprises to be saved for when I'm actually watching the movie in theaters

It's not a movie that needs to spoil anything. The novelty factor does most of the work.

BvS's target audience was essentially one dude called Zack Snyder. Some have a similar taste, most do not.

They tried a modern take of 'Superman for all' with Superman Returns and it made $400 million WW, basically people don't know what they want with Superman, they demand more 'punching', Snyder gives it to them, then they whinge about 'too much punching' so dammed either way....

No they didn't.

They tried a soap opera driven Superman movie that rehashed elements from Donner.

They've yet to do a modern Superman film that's truly for everyone.

Guys, you'll never please all of the people all of the time, a director and his/her crew supporting them have to make the best film of their vision for as much mass appeal as possible.
