Well, I still find that confusing. Most of these people are just saying the films weren't critical darlings, audience favorites, and box office record breakers. I would think most fans who would care enough to pay attention to this sort of news would know this stuff already.

Like why is it important for Geoff Johns to admit that DCEU films haven't been unequivocal successes due to complaints about tone and characterization? These criticisms have been swirling about these films for years. Do people really think entertainment executives live in some sort of bubble and care nothing about critics or box office?

I don't know why it's suddenly significant that these people are speaking candidly about the DCEU. Did anyone expect Geoff Johns to go around proclaiming BvS a blockbuster masterpiece? No one was doing that, so why is it important to come out of the closet, as it were, about transparently obvious facts?

This is only news to the more extreme contingent of fans, not to those who can think rationally. Some are actually throwing the actors under the bus now as if they are being disloyal by speaking up, but of course that gets harder to do the more people speak up.

But you're getting at what I'm talking about. Why is there this weird framing of things as "speaking up" or making admissions? There's this odd connotation of some sort of secretive and shameful wrongdoing that demands culpability. Not only is what is being said stuff that's already been said, and is in fact objective reality based on critics reviews and box office receipts, but also no one was being cagey or muzzled on these topics.

Using words and phrases like "speaking up" and "admission" makes it sound like these people are sharing hidden dirty secrets, copping to some sort of accusation, or exposing a grand conspiracy. When all that's being said is that critics and audiences didn't enthusiastically embrace DCEU films that took creative tonal and character risks.

This isn't news, and it certainly isn't something that requires everyone in the DCEU family to speak out as though they are making statements about an egregious wrong or dastardly cover up of some kind of secret offense.

Yeah I agree pretty much with all of that. The terminology used is obviously to try and make it into more of a story than it is. I'm glad that they are commenting on the DCEU films, and that's all that's happening here. It's not like there was any obligation to do so. I welcome being able to hear them frame the situation in their own words.
 
I think it stems from Henry simply feeling frustrated at being 'on a leash' as Superman thus far and although seeing what was intended and playing the role both in front and in publicity is, as many, are enjoying seeing a more 'rounded' version of Superman. That's not him slating Snyder or the films he's appeared in so far, it's saying 'I appreciate my place in these films and look forward to being a more centrally noticeable interpretation of Superman to the cinema going public in future'. Which is consistent with his love, respect and approach to the press element of his job.

Yup, and I'll continue to frame things that way. They could have played coy with how poorly the movies have performed but they've all been fairly frank in openly admitting that mistakes were made. You can continue to get hung up on semantics but there's no way around the fact that this is a valid way to state things.

They are being asked direct questions about the issue. So other than straight up lying in a way that would portray them as absolutely insane, what do you expect? How do you "play coy" about reviews and box office? How can Gal Gadot openly admit a mistake was made and thus a retcon was introduced in Diana's solo origin film when, if said retcon had been clear, it wouldn't have required an open admission in the first place!?

There's the people who've seen pre-screenings, and test screenings. And then there's the actual critics.

Oh man was that the one that claimed BVS had a thunderous standing ovation and that Snyder had cemented himself as the visionary who'd lead the DCEU to greatness? :funny:

Still, it depends. Are these early Justice League screenings for fanboys (who are predisposed to like the movie usually) or actual critics? Because I thought it was the latter. A lot of the people in the reviews seemed to be actual writers for various sites.

I really liked MoS and BvS, but I know changes were needed as not everyone felt the same as me! :funny: Still, I wish it was possible to peep into another timeline and see all the DCEU movies he was planning as he would have made them. Failing that, do you remember all the talk in the early days of pre-release publicity for BvS, about Snyder having a top-secret whiteboard in his office with everything mapped out? I'd love to have got a look and seen where it was all headed. It's probably been wiped now!
 
The Flash plans have changed really drastically. I wonder if the time travel stuff from BVS with Barry will be addressed in Justice League or if it was something that was going to be dealt with in a future movie.

And of course there was Justice League originally being a two parter.
 
I've been wondering about that time-travel scene as well. I hope it gets resolved at some point and not just quietly forgotten.
