You’re speaking in generalities which is not a good platform for a sellable story. The story has to be more than just the villain being villainous, otherwise what’s the point? No audience is going to want to see this type of film, what you’re describing is just far too vague.

Everything is vague at this point for the sake of having this discussion. As long as the audience is into the character of The Joker, who is mightly popular and if there is a presentable story to be told then people will flock to it. There needs to be a legit story beats to get invested. This may or may not even happen but if they have a story to tell where it can get a$$'s in the seats..then tell it but you better hope and pray it's good.

People love The Joker... when he’s fighting Batman.

If those idiots think the casual audience (or in other words the vast majority) are going to turn out in their droves for not one, but two, Joker movies, they are delusional. Especially when you have the choice of either basing your entire movie around a vicious, unpleasant, homicidal, sociopathic evil bastard... or The Joker as anti-hero... neither of which will go down well.

The cretins at WB are simply trying to leverage Batman as much as possible, without actually using Batman. This will fail miserably, because people want to see Batman. Not his supporting characters!

Oh they don't need any help from us when it comes to bad ideas.

True dat.

I mean, seriously, of ALL the things they could have done, this Letoker movie has to be their worst decision yet. And this is the studio that gave us BvS.

Literally ANY other project except maybe an EisenLex movie directed by Zack Snyder would be better than this.

I'm asking for what that beat is though. All I've heard in the last 2 days is people giving generalities about this but nothing of substance as to how you actually make this idea work. Can you name any films where the bad guy isn't just going up against other bad guys?

The Expanded Batman Universe film slate, to be announced at Comic Con:

The Harvey Bullock Case Files - 2019
Vicki Vale: Investigative Reporter - 2020
Joker: Tats & Gas, starring Jared Leto - 2020
Joker Origins: Dawn of the Smile, starring Joaquin Phoenix - 2021
Jim Gordon: Year One - 2021
Catman: My Life on the D-List - 2022
Two-Face & The Riddler Forever - 2023
Crazy Quilt Begins - 2024

God I really hope this DC subscription includes the entire DC catalogue. All the movies, all the shows. They should honestly put all the comics on there too. I’d pay $20 a month for that.

And for the record, I do think people will turn out for a solo Joker movie. He’s one of the most popular comic book characters of all time. That said, Batman should have a shadowy small role just like the way he was portrayed in Azzarello’s Joker.

Hypothetically speaking, I could have seen people turning out for a movie about Nicholson or Ledger's Joker. I could also see people turning out for the Elseworlds Joker movie. I just don't know why people would go to see a movie about a Joker they already know they don't like.

I think the best spot for Joker right now are villain-centric films like SS sequels or maybe Birds of Prey, where he can be a foil for Barbara Gordon or Harley. A solo film feels pretty unsolicited, but if it has to happen, names like Joaquin Phoenix or Scorsese at least make it hard to stay indifferent. Making it a solo Leto feature brings w it a meh-ness of major caliber.

Matthew Vaughn directing the Kick-Ass reboot. Out on Supes?

Christopher MQuarrie, come on down...

It the same arrogance Lucasfilm had with Solo. These studios seems to think that if they put something in front of us associated with something popular we are going to bite. They’re in for a rude shock if they think The Joker alone is enough to entice people, especially one that has been greatly disliked as Leto’s. Like Solo no-one is asking for this, and WB will rightfully suffer the same fate as Lucasfilm should they persist with this idea. I’d rather they spend that $70-80m on developing new IP’s, but hey, it ain’t my money to waste.

It is super hilarious that this news comes out just after Solo bombed at the box office.

It could've been worse. We could've gotten "Haha" eyebrows and whatever the hell these shirts are:

I would have fired everyone involved with that design after seeing it get that far

In a weird, "**** it" sort of way, I actually don't mind the suits. They have a Bowie-esque weirdness about them.

But they can get out of here with these trashy tattoos and shirts. Come on now. :funny:

In some ways Nicholson was already in a Joker movie. Burton's Batman was more about him than it was Batman.

Nightcrawler is a decent example of this. He's evil at the start, evil throughout and evil at the end, growing more powerful throughout the film. And plenty of people liked it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want a solo Joker film, but it could be successful.

So was Nolan's TDK..? It's like, anytime I put on TDK I skip to the Joker scenes only because, y'know, Ledger MADE this movie watchable! Everything else was a meta-zzzzzz... A Joker movie would put asses in seats. CBM's about villians will be the NEXT BIG THING in this genre. Think about it. Thanos, who?

I disagree about that. I can find other parts of that movie interesting. I don't completely agree that B89 is a Joker movie either, but it does have a display of being kinda Joker origin-esque.

I’ll already own all the films I want and have access to the shows so it’s the comics as well or bust for me. I guess animation could also seal the deal but then I could spend that $20 a month buying them all anyway (for the ones I don’t get on cable).

There’s plenty crime and horror movies that focus on the villain and don’t have them going against other villains.

As someone said above, nightcrawler is a good example.

I think Funny Games is a good example too.

A small horror type movie with Joker as the main character would work fine imo
