All Things Superman: An Open Discussion

Ha HA.
It looks like they would have avoided filming there after what happened with JL.

Off-topic, but it looks like Justice League: Mortal isn't the only DC property to have issues with Australia according to Production Weekly.

I've said it before, I'll believe this movie is actually happening when I hear cameras have rolled. Otherwise, it's WB and it's a superhero movie not named Batman or Superman, so I'm not really expecting anything to happen.

I think there might be more issues than just the budget to be honest.

To me, its JL all over again...

Green Lantern Might Be Grounded

The thought of another DC related character outside of Superman and Batman flying across the big screen always seemed like a novelty to me. I never felt quite at ease with the notion, but I sure wanted to see it happen. Since "Green Lantern" was first announced, I found myself doubting that I would ever get to enjoy it at the local multi-plex. Even my multiple email correspondences with Green Lantern writer Marc Guggeheim always screamed for reassurance from the scribe. I was never sure. I'm still not.

Its been almost two months since the news broke that Ryan Reynolds had been cast as Green Lantern, since then, we haven't heard much. We were expecting that WB would announce that Carol Ferris had been cast, maybe Sinestro. The only person who has given any real insight into the project has been screenwriter Marc Guggenheim, who has since turned his attention to television to work on Flash Forward. Martin Campbell hasn't uttered a peep since being announced as director of the project, although the most recent draft of the script was said to have been heavily influenced by his ideas.

Today via Production Weekly's Twitter we were finally given some news on "Green Lantern", although it doesn't seem to be all that positive.

"Green Lantern’s proposed Australian shoot is understood to be under threat after the rising Australian dollar has blown out production costs."

It is certainly possible that Warner Bros could lock up a different location to shoot the film. New Zealand, Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto being the most likely destinations. This could also be the beginning of a string of bad news. I hope the next report will be positive and we don't hear something like Martin Campbell has dropped out and new writers have been brought on board. I really don't feel like being witness to another "Justice League: Mortal".

According to Brendan Swift of Inside Film, Warner Bros is trying to negotiate with the NSW State Government in hopes of receiving a higher level of concessions to make up for the increased value of the Australian Dollar.

The value of the Australian dollar has climbed by more than 16 per cent since the State Labor government announced the deal to film at Fox Studios in mid-April. The big-budget Hollywood blockbuster was expected to create around 500 local jobs, including 100 performers and 200 crew.

Normally a production would lock in finance once said film received the all important green light. However, subsequent drafts of the "Green Lantern" script delayed filming and the ability to lock in said finance.

I wonder if its possible that it's already dead? Thats what happened with JL and it was a long while before we knew that it was for sure dead.

Just a hunch, but I wouldn't be surprised if Campbell was off the film.

I'd really hate to benefit from GL being canned but I wonder if its possible this could have a positive impact on a superman film being fast tracked? I know it was supposedly fast tracked anyway, but we've heard nothing but McTiegue rumors.
Maybe it wont change anything at all, I dunno.

If GL doesn't get made then that WB/DC summit was the biggest ******** waste of meeting ever. What the hell was the point of that thing? To talk about DC superhero films that will never get made? GL may not get made, Superman is in total limbo and Wonder Woman, please. Can WB stop jerking us around and blowing hot air all the time and either make these damn movies or license them to someone who will. This is so damn frustrating.

Let WB stick with Jonah Hex and The Losers and all the other DC properties they are not afraid to film and license out all the big guns to someone willing to actually get it done. I'm tired of their inability to get these superhero projects off the ground. It's a joke.

Ya know, its sad but I would prolly hold my breath if they announced a Superman film tomorrow. I would be afraid something would happen to it as well.

Honestly, the only way I think we'll ever get the films that we want is for wb to set up DC with their own film division. That will never happen though, so we're screwed for the most part.

Not good at all.

I'm starting to feel the same way. I can understand their reluctance to movie forward with Superman after SR and all the lawsuits, but there really is no excuse not to make GL. Solid script, director, leading man...they'd better work through their problems and film this.

I kinda agree. There's something going on with Green Lantern as a whole. I just don't feel the confidence from the big wigs on this one...

in the end, I'm sure it's a setback but it won't hurt the greenlighting of Green lantern..

Even Feburary is still early for a shoot for a Summer 2011 film. If all else, they can have enough time to find other locations in the meantime.

As we've talked about for some months, that wouldn't surprise me. He hasn't said one thing about the project.

I wonder if its possible that it's already dead? Thats what happened with JL and it was a long while before we knew that it was for sure dead.

All together possible, we'll wait to see who says what next. This should start something.

I think it definitely a money issue, i think there are/were casting issues as well.

I dunno, something is up. Maybe ego's at wb are getting in the way. Who knows.

i hope that we're just jumping to conclusions but there's always a possibility that the project may fell apart, or gets a new director. which worries me.

In theory, this is the same situation as the Bioshock production; it was all about money and shooting locations, and the recent director switch..

Its possible we're reaching although i'm using another wb film to go by, JL.
Both were supposed to film in Australia, both had money issues, both had/is having rumblings of delays, both directors were/are silent for long periods of time.
We saw how JL turned out. It remains to be seen how GL holds up.

Campbell was the best thing about the project. That would suck.

Just my little HO, but if GL dies, I think WB will have a hard time getting the fanbase up for any other CB film they announce in the future (other than Batman).
I think it would be met with skepticism.

this reminds me of the situation with Bioshock.

Nevertheless, I think the movie will be made. Maybe it's due to my blind optimism.

Speaking of costs, I think that's why they kept the same screenwriters. If they HAD A PROBLEM with the budget or script, they would have brough in new writers. Of course, that would mean more money spent.
