All Things Wonder Woman: An Open Discussion - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 25

Is Fox making any effort to push Logan for an Oscar though? Seems like Warner Bros. has more faith in Wonder Woman being Oscar worthy.

Fox will push The Papers (main Oscar candidate), Suburbicon and The Greatest Showman at the Oscars. Those are most likely to be Fox's main players in 2018.

It's a fine film. I HOPE it has changed the perception of the studios in regards to female led tent poles (in front of and behind the cameras... Though the successes of previous female led blockbusters didn't move the needle much in previous years, perhaps the super hero zeitgeist thrust of WW will give it more influence...) and I am more than happy with it getting the response it has...

But it's not an awards worthy movie outside of it's incredible technical acumen. I maybe... MAYBE could see Jenkins getting a nod but even then... It's a sturdy and solidly made film that will be remembered well but... Jenkins getting a best director Oscar seems it would be about the cultural context of the film's release (which I can't say is easy to tease from any appreciation of the film, true...) more than trying to objectively assess the film's strengths or weaknesses.

Put me squarely in the camp also that views this film in a positive light... But I can't at all say it reaches the dramatic and emotional heights of LOGAN. Who cares if more people saw WW than LOGAN. That's an immaterial to the judgment of the respective films' quality type of metric.
First of all, I'll start by saying I agree with you that it's not Oscar-worthy (in terms of any major categories). All this Oscar talk surrounding any recent CBM's is totally bogus to me. The last and only one I've thought worthy of that consideration was TDK. Nothing else since has come close.

But I will say this film affected me far, FAR more emotionally than Logan did. Logan was just more depressing than emotional for me. This film got me actively rooting for Diana, cheering at the catharsis when she finally owned her power, and broke my heart in its 3rd act revelations. It really ran the full gamut of emotions for me. Logan by comparison pretty much ran one steady line of, to quote Veronica Mars - "life's a b****...until you die." Despite thinking it was a very well-crafted film, I just couldn't find any emotional investment in that one. Left me completely cold. *shrugs*

Agree with you on Logan vs Wonder Woman effect.

I would have thought Logan would've affected me more but surprisingly it was Wonder Woman which did.

I think Logan had too much hype that screwed up my expectations.

I haven't seen Dunkirk yet but Logan is by far the best movie I've seen this year and I think it's Oscar chances are slim. I applaud them for trying but I think any Oscar push is going to be for not. But who knows Deadpool ended up being a Oscar snub by the time award season came along. For those who don't know Deadpool was nominated by the producers guild, and I think writers guild. Which is usually a good precursor for the Oscars.

Pre-orders are estimating September for the Digital/DVD release of the film. Does that sound correct? I am really eager to own this film and watch it over and over again.

Etta's mission lol, so that'd be like Shaun of the Dad Lucy Davis bonus clip =P

Cool stuff! Go Etta :word: So is that the Blackhawks or Oddfellows (as seen in the Steve Trevor comic)?

So happy with the official Blu-ray covers:

Can people order any of those covers or do you not know what you're getting when you place the order?

You don't get to choose the cover... The DVD and regular Blu-ray has the bracelet block pose while the 3D Blu-ray has the first poster as its cover. The 4k Blu-ray has the one with the other characters in the background and finally the Neo-pack (Wal-Mart exclusive I believe) is the one in the middle.

The shining bracelet one is my fave.

I like the middle one, but I would prefer the one with her holding the tank over her head.

I like the one in the middle and the bracelet one is great as well, though I'd love to have the tank over head one

I'm waiting to see what the Steelbook is gonna look like

Ok I see. Thanks.

Seems like the Japanese marketing of WW might not be very good at all

Wonder Woman doesn’t need the kawaii treatment

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture...s-not-happy-kawaii-wonder-woman/#.WYMQgYjytPY

If they did it to Cutie Honey and Fujiko Mine, they can do it to Wonder Woman. I’m talking about the kawaii treatment, which works like a kiss of death to bad-ass super-heroines in Japanese pop culture.

Like Wonder Woman, Cutie Honey and Fujiko were butt-kicking superstars in an openly discriminating, rigidly patriarchal society. But when the two characters made the leap from the pages of their respective mangas to live action on the big screen, the kawaii factor was employed, turning them into demure sexpots. What happened? Marketing, that’s what. Or studio executives who refused to budge from the notion that audiences don’t want to see a female character that’s too assertive.

In an interesting culture clash last week, Japanese fans of amekomi (American comics) have expressed their deep displeasure at Warner Brothers Japan’s online trailer for “Wonder Woman.” It didn’t help that the narration was done by Kotono Mitsuishi, who voices the character of teenage anime heroine Sailor Moon, as she makes three main points: 1. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) grew up on an island entirely populated by women and has therefore never been with a man; 2. Wonder Woman has never known love (alluding to the first point); 3. Wonder Woman is adorably clueless (because of the first and second points?).

Japanese fans took to social media to call the trailer “saitei” (the pits), pointing out the glaring differences between the mature, feminist discussion surrounding “Wonder Woman” overseas and how she’s being reduced to a naive male fantasy (cue the batting eyelashes) in Japan.

“This is what happens when a polished, sophisticated story like this goes through the Japan filter — it just turns into trash,” tweeted one enraged fan. Another tweeted: “We’re not the bigoted, ignorant audience that these studios think. We deserve better and so does Wonder Woman.”

Warner Brothers Japan got the message — to an extent. The official theatrical trailer has toned down the “clueless” element and the voiceover narration is now male (uhh, problematic?), but the kawaii factor lingers. Honestly, it’s about time female action heroes in Japan are liberated from such stereotypes and are allowed to own who they are — which is what “Wonder Woman” is all about.

If you can gets past the trailer, the film is a formidably fun experience. More than one tweet vowed not to see the movie in protest, but that would be self-defeating. Witness the confident direction employed by Patty Jenkins, and see “Wonder Woman” for its beautifully written female characters — courtesy of a writing team consisting of four men.

It might end up quite a different movie to what Patty Jenkins produced, and Japanese fans might go in seeing something different and not liking it, thinking that this is what the movie is. But in the first place, they might have misinterpreted what Jenkins was trying to do.

Wonder Woman promoted in Japan with idol song “A Woman Can’t Sleep Alone,” angering some fans

Detractors call the title and lyrics of Nogizaka46 song, the video for which has just been released, a poor fit for the independent DC Comics star.

Wonder Woman doesn’t have much of an existing position in the Japanese poplar imagination, but a number of Japanese fans who are familiar with the character weren’t pleased when some ads made a noticeable point of her lack of romantic experience. Now, though, it’s the film’s Japanese language image song that some are saying betrays the essence of the character, due in no small part to its title, “Onna ha Hitori ja Nerenai,” which translates to “A Woman Can’t Sleep Alone.”

The song is by idol singer unit Nogizaka46, the “official rivals” of AKB48 (though producer Yasushi Akimoto is in charge of both groups). Nogizaka46 is also acting as Wonder Woman’s “official ambassadors, in Japan” participating in cross-promotional projects, one of which is “A Woman Can’t Sleep Alone” being designated as the “image song” of the film.

Those critical of the musical tie-up say it runs contrary to Wonder Woman’s strong, independent personality to promote her film with a song claiming a woman can’t sleep by herself.

Online criticisms have included:

  • “This is Wonder Woman we’re talking about. She should have a stronger-sounding song.”
  • “If you’re going to choose an image song for Wonder Woman, shouldn’t it be a powerful song about the beauty of life?”
  • “You’re saying Wonder Woman can’t sleep alone? Please, don’t put this image song in the Japanese-subtitled theatrical release.”
  • “As someone who likes both Nogizaka46 and American comics, I’m really disappointed by the title and lyrics.”
  • “The song’s guitar and strings are a good fit for Wonder Woman, so I really wish Akimoto had given it a proper title and lyrics.”

In the video’s defense, the visuals don’t do anything to imply that the women portrayed (members of Nogizaka46 living in a dystopian future) need a man’s help, as they’re shown to be capable of medical care, botany, melee combat, and magically controlling the powers of fire and ice, As a matter of fact, the only male characters who show up at all in the five-minute music video are a team of semi-demonic assailants, all of whom are killed off-screen by the armed idol singers.

Even still, some online commenters have interpreted the lyrics as an association that women are inherently weak, and say the song is putting a damper on their excitement about watching Wonder Woman’s first solo film.

I get the feeling that WW might be promoted as something other than she is in Japan, and then movie-going audiences there won't like what this thing is and could dismiss the movie, not realising that it's the Japanese marketing's own doing and not the movie itself.

If her voice is dubbed in Japan, I hope Gal isn't given some very shy and demure kind of voice that makes her sound weak and submissive and lacking any authority. But it wouldn't surprise me if they did do that.

Target Exclusive Digi-book for me. It'll match my collection of DCEU Target Exclusive Digi-books for Man of Steel, BvS, and Suicide Squad.

I'll definitely be throwing some money at the DVDs, maybe the steelbook, or some other collector's type edition.

They should have holographic covers that, when you hold it one way, gives you one cover, and when you hold it another way it gives you a different one.
