All Things Wonder Woman: An Open Discussion - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 25

They said the goddess Artemis, not the Amazon Artemis.

Having two people play characters with the same name would just cause confusion and resentment, especially if Ann Wolfe's Artemis were left out of the sequel.
And if they included Ann, how exactly would that work? Hey Artemis, meet the god you were named for? Isn't it cool she gets a big role and you just had a bit part?
Or does Davis just get a cameo too?

Agree. I think they have no intention of following the original Amazon's story, and while I think Anne was great, she's not a professional actress so I don't think her character will have much more development, which makes me sad. Artemis is such a great character, just as Antiope and Hippolyta. I'm kinda bummed they seem to have no interest in develop more the Amazons world and interaction between them, and the choice of casting athletes as the main Amazons outside Robin and Connie is an indication they will not be following that path. So my hopes are now all in Antiope and Hippolyta, because particularly when it comes to talents like Robin Wright, you just don't cast one of the most skilled dramatic actress around just to have her for 20 minutes doing just physical stuff in the first movie, I think Patty has some plans for her and that's what they probably were discussing at dinner with her and Gal the other night. I hope so at least!

All of WW promo pics have been on point

But if they did want to pursue the Artemis storyline who replaces WW, then Ann Wolfe isn't really an actress. They might want to cast someone else.

How do we know the Amazon Artemis is the only one with that name? What if there are several Amazons with that name? They could all be named after the goddess. That would allow Ann Wolfe's character to still exist while having a more traditional depiction of the character from the comics.

Of course, in films or TV shows, unlike in real life, they rarely have two characters with the same name, precisely for the reason that it might confuse audiences. Although they're not going to be able to avoid that in Avengers: Infinity War with Peter Parker and Peter Quill, but they'll probably use their surnames then. But do Amazons have surnames? They're more likely to be named "Artemis of region A " and "Artemis of region B", or "Artemis, daughter of X" etc if there were more than one Amazon with that name.

We did have two characters with the same mothers' names in BvS, but they played that up and stopped the whole fight because they were both named Martha.

Where are all these new images coming from? Did they shoot a bunch before but never released them? How many others are still not seen?

My understanding is that they shoot a lot of images before release (I don't know if it's during production or after), and that they use them for various marketing purposes (posters, magazines covers/interiors...), some might never be released.

Is that Etta Candy on the left of Patty Jenkins? What event is this that they're doing without Gal?

Artemis wasnt even named in the movie. The general audience wouldn't care, I wouldn't

"A step backwards." Sure, Cameron.

James Cameron calls 'Wonder Woman' a 'step backwards' for Hollywood

It's idiotic what he has to say. So he'd like female heroes to be like Sarah Conner or Ellen Ripley and they all have to act tough and more masculine? No that's a step backwards. I don't think the film would've been as well received if Jenkins just gave us more of that crap. I bet Cameron would've been in favour of Gina Carano or Ronda Rousey.

Indeed, in the interview to the Time magazine, Jenkins said that her idea of WW was not just to be another copy of male action hero.

Q :It's not like we haven't seen female action heroes before in Divergent or The Hunger Games or Tomb Raider or Underworld. Why Wonder Woman?

Petty: There was a very difficult time when a female hero was a man in a woman's body. Hunger Games really changed that: a woman leading a non--woman's film in the action genre. I think Wonder Woman does that on a very big scale.

Wonder Woman has always been a proxy for America: scarily powerful, but a force for good. Did you make love her superpower with current affairs in mind?

She always has stood for truth and love. Her genesis was based on Artemis. However, I do think that it's very important right now to celebrate exactly that quality.

Why?

Our fantasy of a hero is that he's the good guy who is going to shut down the bad guy. That has got to change if we want to deal with the crisis that we're in. There is no bad guy. We are all to blame. New kinds of heroics need to be celebrated, like love, thoughtfulness, forgiveness, diplomacy, or we're not going to get there. No one is coming to save us.

Your dad was an Air Force F-4 fighter pilot who was awarded a Silver Star in Vietnam. Did his experience of war color your thoughts?
Yeah. My father wanted to be a hero. He went to the Air Force Academy, was valedictorian, and then he found himself strafing villagers in Vietnam in a war he didn't want to be in and didn't understand. He was extremely conflicted about the line where he went from being the good guy to possibly being the bad guy.

So, it Not a step backwards, it's a step forward.

So, it Not a step backwards.

I remember Patty wanted WW to be tough/strong and beautiful as well, like all women want to be beautiful, why not? and James seems to think any female lead that decorate herself is like - stereotype and backwards?

and James objectified Kate Winslet and apparently JAmie Curtis Lee himself

Females have either mostly been love interests or damsels in distress in the past or they've gone to the opposite extreme and made them tough and masculine. When have we had all these women who can be strong heroes and still very feminine? So how is that backwards? Cameron's Sarah Connor trope is outdated.

James Cameron's thinking is in sync with those UN women protestors who opposed WW's appointment as honorary ambassador. It doesn't mean it's right though.
