All Things Wonder Woman: An Open Discussion

I'm not opposed to seeing Wonder Woman's origins on the big-screen, but I don't think that her origin story needs to drive an entire movie.

Personally, I would be happy to see Wonder Woman's origins established in a brief "interview" between Wonder Woman and Lois Lane in DoJ. Diana can explain that she's a demi-goddess from a hidden island of (immortal) Amazon warriors who, after the events of Zod's attack, has been sent to man's world as an Ambassador of Peace. If anything more is required to be known about Diana's origins, then it should be critical to the plot and can be shown in flashback or simply narrated by one of the characters.

I disagree. There is so much good and important to Diana's character stuff in the origin. Especially the contest, the circumstances of her birth, the culture of the Amazon's, THE ORIGIN OF THE AMAZONS, the relationship with her mother, who would rather her daughter stay home... So much. To be TOLD all that and not see it would be disappointing not just to fans but the general audience as well since it sounds like a great tale to see. Plus... I don't want to hear the usual complaints about "show, don't tell". Which if they covered her origin in exposition would finally be an accurate complaint. YMMV of course.

I agree with KRYPTON. Diana's origin isn't one to gloss over, especially considering this is her very first big-screen incarnation. Aside from The Lego Movie that is, lol.

Yeah. I get wanting to get to the meat of things, as it were, but the origin is so important, especially to Diana's character. We need to see her interaction with Hippolyta and the other Amazons on the island. We need to see the contest and her mother yielding to her daughter's wishes and her birth alone has got to play a part in the film's plot or at least be alluded to for future films. And c'mon... it would all be a visual feast if done right too. Who wouldn't want to see Diana competing for the right to visit the outside world against other Amazons? That would serve the function of what we've gotten with Spider-Man films and tv shows where he starts to test his powers before putting the suit on. It gives the audience a rundown as to what exactly the hero can and can't do and preps us for the use of power later on in the film.

Some characters, like Flash, I don't think we need an origin film for (an origin tied movie for new characters to the screen though would be a good idea, but maybe it's just me that doesn't need a full Flash origin movie). Wonder Woman is not one of those characters.

You know what? I kinda agree with your sentiment about Flash. Yeah, would love to see a full on origin on the big screen. However, and this is NOT because of the existence of the TV show and it already covering it, I could see a Flash movie taking care of the origin with limited... um... Flashbacks (:cwink:) and getting right into it. I like the use of narration in the tv show but I could see even more use of it in the Flash movie. From the start we could get right into it with Flash talking to the audience and, um... getting us up to speed (man... Archer was right... We do use a lot of idioms) so that we get right into things and the meat of Barry's story, which is about how being the fastest man alive affects his life.

Again though, Diana? We really should see her origin play out in some way.

Did WB/DC choose the demigod origin for Wonder Woman because it would be simplier to explain her powers to the general audience?

Maybe, because the original clay origin would throw a lot of people off and would confuse people.

But, I hope they still keep Wonder Woman in character, as being a warrior and Ambassador of Peace.

Simplicity is probably part of it and it's easier to connect to a plot. Both origins have their pros and cons.

Funny thing is the Lynda Carter TV show and JLU doesn't mention the clay origin so it hasn't really been popularized mainstream.

I think they should have the clay origin but reveal it was a lie made up by Hippolyta to protect Diana from the wrath of Hera.

Yes, they need to pay homage to the clay origin somehow, and this worked for Azz in the Nu52. I also believe having Hera, the queen of the gods, be a lethal threat to Diana could make for a super-suspenseful movie. It seems that CBMs are not shying away from those grand stories from comics anymore (never thought I'd see Marvel's Civil War onscreen).

Last, I don't get why actually making her clay origin means people will get confused or won't relate. A huge part of the human population believe Adam was made from clay and God breathed life into him...so I guess they believe we all came from clay. Plus, they could play up the whole "I'm different" angle, which people do relate to. That said, I have no problem with Zeus being the father.

It actually was mentioned in JL/JLU. On the show Hades talks to Diana and says he and her mother brought her to life and that both Hippolyta and he shaped the clay that formed her. It's why when Hermes shows up to give her a mission to go to the Underworld and take care of Felix Faust who has overthrown Hades the messenger of the Olympians says something like, "No need to stand on ceremony and call me Lord Hermes. After all Diana... You're, ah... Practically part of the family." Later on that episode is when Hades tells her about he and Hippolyta.

Ah, so it was only in dialogue? I forgot about that.

Hades creating Wonder Woman... to think some fans were upset with Azzarello just for Hades teaching her how to fight.

Ares taught her how to fight in Azzarello's.

I hope this happens in the DCCU. A bad seed uncle who happens to be the War God secretly training and perhaps corrupting a young Diana was brilliant.

Although I have never liked her taking on the War God mantle. What does it even mean? She basically does whatever she wants regardless of supposed responsibilities on Olympus. They should've made it more like she became possessed or something and becoming the War God totally changed her for a few issues until somehow she broke free of the influence.

Speaking of Azz, I miss him on the book. I've given the Finches several issues but I'm not impressed. In fact WW is no longer on my pull list, at least I don't download on day of release.

One of the things I like about Azzarello's take is that the gods are morally ambiguous like in Greek myths. They aren't flat out evil or good. They just have their own self-interests and agendas like real people.

Azzarello's Ares wasn't a bad seed. The point of Diana taking the God of War title is that Ares was tired and his mind changed because of his relationship with Diana. She was the best qualified in his eyes even though she turned him down when she was young.

Remember the arc of their relationship that started when Diana was young. She taught Ares, the God of War 'mercy'. Ares became tired of his old ways. So he wants Diana to redefine what it means to be the God of War.

An important point is how Azzarello defines War. War isn't violence or aggression which is the simple way Ares was depicted before. War is political and sociological. War is the ultimate "settler of dispute". So the way I see it, Ares wants to pass the baton to Diana so that she could represent a new way to wage war, to settle dispute with the mercy she shows. Think of the title as The God of Ending Conflict.

Everybody interested in mythology should read CRYPTONOMICON by NEAL STEPHENSON. There is a section in the end where he goes into an idea that the world can be seen as dividing between cultures that choose to embrace Athena over Ares even though both are war gods. Very interesting stuff.

While you're technically right about the bad seed thing, if I had a daughter and Ares sneaked into my house to train her, he's BAD SEED. Period. lol

I like the way you think but the book doesn't seem to be going that way. If Diana is the God of Ending Conflict, sounds great, but I don't see that happening. She just sorta wears her War hat a bit and then throws it down for another one of her many hats.

He didn't go to her house. They met in a forest and trained outside when she wasn't doing her Amazon studies.

Yeah, the Finches write as if they didn't read Azzarello's run.

It's really disappointing to hear, though I haven't read it (and don't plan to). Both my favourite New 52 titles got writer changes and went downhill.

I wasn't being literal. Yeah, I read the issue where they met in the forest. I'm thinking Hippolyta wouldn't be amused.

But again, I hope they use this in the DCCU.

I'd rather go for General Phillipus training Diana, since the Amazons have to play an important role in nutruing and developing her, as a warrior and a princess.

I'd like to see the conflict between Ares and Wonder Woman play on the big screen.

Yeah, I would have it so that Phillipus is Hippolyta's closest friend and chief adviser.

Nubia is Phillipus' daughter and she's BFF with Diana while Aleka is Diana's frenemy.

This Stars filming soon, right? Will we be getting casting news in the next few weeks? I hope we get some GoT alums.

Fall this year, according to the Hollywood Reporter. :) I'm betting on a full (or at least majority) cast at Comic Con for the announcement.
