I thought he was the obvious choice of actors in that age range especially since he's shown he can work very effectively as a lead on large budget movies. He also has the the look. And for once I actually called it!

i think he's a great actor for a kid

my biggest problem is that i don't understand why feige/marvel WANTS teenage spider-man to begin with. it's not even the majority of his stories

college/just-graduated college is the best spidey time frame. all the interactions with the street level stuff, adult romances, hanging with the avengers as a more equal

actually i think i do know, and it's b/c they want to recapture an entire youth generation on "their" spidey, but it's still marvel it'll make a billion

well at the time of my writing this, Asa is testing for the role, BUT Tom has tested the week before, and his results were much loved.

when the shortlist came out a few weeks back these two guys were my bets, so im happy with whoever will be Spidey.

my hope is that whoever will be Spidey has a healthy mindset because he's gonna be in it for the long haul. theres nothing that makes me sadder than seeing a young performer be all this happy and sparkly and then a few years down the line they look so worn down and miserable.

yeah, plus being a 15 year old who gets cast in a billion dollar franchise as one of the biggest characters in the world is sure to kind of turn you into a *****e if you're not careful, so hopefully whoever they choose is smart and humble

I do agree that some actors just can't handle the witty part well (Logan Lerman, there's plenty of proof from official performances), but with Asa it's hard to say, since he hasn't played a part that requires that. I remind you that even RDJ isn't funny in all his interviews, because not all comedic actors go for gut busting laughs in interviews (especially if they're also dramatic actors). They more often tend to be a little bit more serious in interviews actually (of course there are exceptions, but my point still stands)

in my opinion there is 3 types when it comes to the comedy aspect in actors: the ones that just can't do it, the ones that have wit in their performance but aren't comedians in interviews, and the ones that are jokey anywhere. It might just be that Asa is the middle one.

After a secretive all-day screen-testing process Saturday, Marvel is on the verge from choosing the actor who will don the red and blue suit of Spider-Man.

According to sources, six teenage boys tested for the highly sought-after role in Captain America: Civil War and follow-up films, one of the biggest "gets" for a young actor in the film business.

Tom Holland, who appeared as one of Naomi Watts' sons in the acclaimed tsunami drama The Impossible, and Asa Butterfield, the child star from Hugo and Ender's Game, were the best known of the contenders. The other four hopefuls included: Judah Lewis (a relative newbie who will be seen in the Jean Marc-Vallee's fall drama Demolition), Matthew Lintz (who will be seen with Adam Sandler in this summer's Pixels), Charlie Plummer (who had a recurring gig on Boardwalk Empire), and Charlie Rowe (a British actor who appeared on Fox's short-lived Red Band Society).​

so there were 4 other boys in the running (other than the earlier names that was leaked out), all of them rather younger than Asa or Tom, but interesting choices nonetheless.

Ok what is with the unnecessary sass? There are plenty of high school students that don't have the appearance of middle schoolers, yet almost all of the choices for the role still look too young to even drive. A superhero is someone that you respect and can count on to keep you protected, and a 5 foot 2" freshmen doesn't fit this quality

At least the previous two actors for Peter actually had a heroic vibe to them; looking at the casting possibilities now makes me think of nothing more than a mediocre kids movie like Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Idc who they cast tbh I just spidey vs venom movie and idk why I'm still waiting on that.

Though that does not mean that you need to cast an actor who could just as easily play Spiderboy (is that even a thing? I don't know). It is complicated, but something just seems very off about casting somebody who is very young in physical appearance

well if theres something consistent with this new Spiderman casting its this:

• they want their new lead to grow in this role
• they want to sell the teen aspect of this new franchise
• his Spiderman trilogy will revolve around his life as a crimefighting superhero AND as a highschooler

im not sure what Kevin Feige has planned, if he's shooting for the high-school musical demographic OR he's just being very prudent by hiring really young and projecting a 10 year production schedule and still have a believable-looking senior year Peter Parker by the time that movie comes out.

..... OR is Kevin trying to grow this Spiderman franchise around this actor the way he will help shape and grow it for years to come? you know the same way how Sean Connery helped grow and mold the James Bond franchise into what it eventually became? gotta admit nobody has really pulled anything like that before or since.

I really don't want Asa, but I think he's the one who's probably gonna get it. I just got a feeling. I could be wrong, I hope I'm wrong, but I think it's gonna be him. And they're more likely to go with an actor of legal age. Dealing with child labor laws on Marvel's schedule is gonna be a lot tougher.

Rowe is also 19. Not sure on the ages for the others but I'd be surprised if they hire anyone younger than 17 because otherwise they wouldn't be 18 when the camera rolled for Spider-Man next year and it would be a PIA to deal with child labor working hours for a lead in a tent pole.

I'm pretty sure that the initial reports of it being between Asa and Tom still hold. Collider is predicting the announcement will come this week, so hopefully we can finally put an end to this madness.

i guess it depends on how much work and supporting cast the first movie will have. they managed to pull it off with the Harry Potter cast and they were much younger when they started.
