Comics Amazing Spider-Man #600 discussion thread

I really need to try out this "Invincible" comic...

You will enjoy it... I describe the book as "Stan Lee Spider-Man" mixed with "21st century grit"... it's what comics are all about.

There's was an issue of the recent Marvel Team-Up (number 14) where Spidey teams up with Spider-Man. It's all to do with a villain in the Invincible Universe that can hop dimensions (hence, why they end up in the Marvel Universe), and that comic sets off an upcoming arc in Invincible's comic (or it did at the time...)

With Invincible and Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman arguably writes the two top comics in the industry.

You'll love it.
Even the comic relief has some pay off.

Minor Spoiler

Mark Grayson (the main character) is a character developing into superman level hero. Issue one starts off with him discovering his powers, when he goes to throw out the garbage at his job at a burger place. He throws the bag INCREDIBLY far. About 20 issues later we find out where the bag landed.

I loved that scene when it happened... great nod to continuity at a time when continuity was not used in comics very much (circa 2004).

I'm sure my great grand kids will be older than Peter one day. Of course he shouldn't be too old. I love this point because its funny to me. Regardless of who makes it, Marvel, pro, anti.

The funny thing is Spidey is still the same age, regardless of him being single or not. "This is the same Spidey we've been reading all these years." Ok. Gotcha

Except the words marriage are now unassociated with him right?
That means they accomplished nothing to "de-age" him in my opinion. They just made him single with less responsibility.

A friend of mine is married. We're both 20. He's in college but I'm single in the military. Is he any older than I am? Does he seem older?

No. We just have different responsibilities.

You missed my point. It's not about his actual age. Stand By Me is a coming of age story, but the characters don't age more than a few days in the movie.

A coming of age story ends when the character has grown to a certain level, not a specific age.

You like stand by me.

Invincible is the best book on the stands. Period.

I got turned onto it when I walked away from the Spidey books. It's one of the main reasons I haven't went back to them. Invincible has characters you care about, action that is INSANE, and the type of angst that Spidey used to be renowned for, but to the tenth power. Honestly, it's as good as Spidey was in his heyday.

I recommend everyone but the volume one Invincible Ultimate Collection, I think it's about 15 bucks or so on Amazon, and then sent your thanks to me, TMOB, and Styleshift. We'll also accept cash rewards for turning you onto the best superhero book of the past 20 years. :o

:cwink:

ps-TMOB, you've got issue #1! I'm totally envious of you, right now!!!:wow:

There's no argument. Those are my two top books, and the best two books being published today!!

It was a fluke really...

I was in the comic shop, looking at the last few weeks of issues, feeling like getting into something new... so there they were... Invincible #1 & #2... I picked them up... kind of liked the art... reminded me of a modern Ditko-esque type style... guy behing the counter told me it was a part of Image's "new" superhero line... (picked up FireBreather as well)... shrugged my shoulders and thought "What the hell? I can always cancel it if it sucks"... LOL

I waited for the first 4 issues before reading them and got kicked in the nuts.

Been buying it monthly ever since.

Romita Sr's cover for ASM #600:

I have to say it's very underwhelming. Nice cover, but nothing special. Looks like I'll just be picking up Alex Ross' one.

^^ OMG, amazing/beautiful cover! Looks like I'm picking that cover up as well as the Alex Ross one and maybe even the others. :wow::up:

I didnt get your comment, Style. My point is that no one lays claim to the one true interpretation of the character--rather, we all have our own views of what the character means to us as individuals. Those views ought to have some basis in the text, I suppose, but no single "true" view exists.

I will check out Invincibles, tho. Loads of folks seem to dig it.

You kidding, i think that one is amazing. Its a total throwback cover, which i love, plus the old school approach of the look of each cover.

ROmita Sr. really never stops amazing me with his brilliant artwork. It just screams Spider-Man. Wouldn't it be nice if Ditko came out in public and did one himself? Still though, I respect his privacy 110%.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a nice cover. Very old school vibe off it. But I'm not such a die hard fan of Romita Sr that I'd considering it amazing, or even want to buy it.

I just find it underwhelming.

No sir....I think you missed my point. :oldrazz:
Coming of age is also a young person's transition from adolescence to adulthood.

His origin.
High school
College
Bachelor
Marriage

He's already come of age, but that doesn't mean his story has ended.
You can only teach this guy a lesson so many times before it gets old. Some characters are flexible because we've only been exposed to them at one given age. Like Batman, Captain America, Tony Stark. etc.

Not the case with Peter Parker. If you try to copy his classic days, you accomplish two things. You make him look like an amateur, or you break him out of his character (See Peter Parker Paparazzi)

At least he's been acting like his older self in American son.....

Off topic- whats the walking dead about? I've heard about it but Its one of those instances where I chose my poison.....Batman R.I.P. is cyanide. :csad:

It took me til issue 7 to get really hooked. You just don't see the ending coming....at all. I miss that feeling in comics.

LOL I've already got the ultimate collection, but thank you anyways.
I remember you talking about it a few months ago as well and it helped set off my interests in the book.

My friend originally scanned issues 1-4 for me and sent them. He said Kirkman doesn't care as long as you eventually buy lol.

I have to admit I wasn't completely sold, I liked the characters and the relationships they had but it seemed a little too generic. If it weren't for the letters column that kirkman wrote I wouldn't have bought the ultimate collection and gotten hooked. :csad:

EDIT: I would LOVE to go in the invincible thread but I haven't even finished reading ultimate collection 2 yet.
As many revelations as this book has, I really am afraid to spoil something for myself since their on like issue 60+ now.

It's like any decent zombie movie that you've ever seen where a group of people band together to fight the living dead whose origin is a mystery. But when the movie ends, you see a few go off and you wonder what will happen.

Walking Dead is the basic "what happens next"...

We've seen many characters introduced in issue #1... many have died, many new ones are introduced, and it's now been close to two years (in the comic) and they just survive their situations... without any further explanations as to why the dead walk again, where to find food, falling in love/hate, etc...

It's a Zombie Soap Opera.

It's an EXTREMELY HIGH character driven book... with zombie goodness.

I recommend you buy the first trade... you will run out and buy the next eight...

:yay:

I know we're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover (and make no mistake, that variant by John Romita Sr for issue #600 is a nice, old school style cover), but given who is featured on that cover and what we apparently know about the story makes me believe each one of these characters will either play a part in the issue, or will be referred to in the issue. Since we're coming off of American Son, obviously Norman and Harry will be referenced, or have cameo appearances. Most of the characters like Jonah, Robbie, and Betty will be there for May and Jay's wedding (since I suspect Jonah will be the best man and Betty will be the maid of honor). And we can pretty much make a good enough guess that Mary Jane will make her return in this issue to spoil and thwart whatever new romantic opportunity that's open to Peter.

And it looks like it's going to be Carlie Cooper. If that's the case, it's a really poor move on the braintrust/webhead's part. For one thing, Carlie hasn't been adequately developed enough as a character; the fact some people can't even identify her on the cover seems indication enough that readers are not exactly emotionally invested in her, let alone see her as a credible potential love interest to compete with MJ for Peter's affections. More readers, I believe, have shown far more interest in Norah, Black Cat, Betty, and even (prior to her being revealed as Menace) Lily than they have a character who, from the very start of Brand New Day, was pegged as a Gwen Stacy knock off. Worse, since it's obvious that MJ's return as Peter's ex who still clearly has feelings for him will be the driving force in the foreseeable future, Carlie's will essentially be seen as nothing more than a plot device rather than an actual character.

Don't me wrong, I prefer Peter and MJ as a couple (especially as a married one) but if Marvel's goal was to, at the very least, create some romantic tension in Peter's life--even if they are still going to pair him back with MJ--then at the very least make the other part of the triangle someone we can give a damn about rather that just a flat, underdeveloped, cipher.

As soon as I read your post I went to go pick up the first trade.
I ended up buying the first three volumes. :yay:

It's been a good while that I've read a really intense story before I go to sleep...

Even if their is the incredibly small chance that I don't like this book, I want to support Robert Kirkman. I want to see him on more titles. Although I'm not sure how he'd work on a hot property like Spider-man.

Brand new day aside I think we all can agree that with any big name character you only have so much control as a writer.

I think thats the charm about his writing. He does whatever the hell he wants because these are his characters.

Hey Stillanerd good to see you again,
Agreed..........I'm one of the people that couldn't tell who the chick with the glasses was. To be honest I didn't care to question why I didn't know who she was.
I just blew it off as her being a new character introduced in the issue. =/

I thought Carlie could be interesting at the beginning, since shes in forensics (something we haven't had before, i think)
But they seriously dropped the ball with her. We saw her far less than any of the other new cast members and with that in mind she's had far less interaction with Peter than anyone else. Even Norah who was introduced waaaay after.

EDIT: Than again we may be looking at the whole picture wrong. She may have nothing to do with a relationship.

But I have a feeling its going to be Norah. Shes trying too hard not to be. Unless they drop the ball again. :(
All of these characters need WAY more time. Even if you haven't read the comics you know Mj is Peter's girl.

Black cat is probably the only one that could come close in terms of competition.

I've just started to get into Invincible. Truly great writing and art, love the characters and the approach to the genre and the whole take on a teenage superhero.

I like the theme they have going that, no one is ever perfect. =)

Man....that cover is classic Spidey-goodness!!

I will hunt this one down, if I have to!!!

I really like the JR Sr cover, but I'm old so maybe i'm nostalgic.

No, you just recognize great art when you see it. I'm 29, and I think it's phenomenol!!! Then again, I have an 18x24 "Spider-Man No More" Romita print on my wall, so I'm biased like that!

So weird to see Norman and Harry drawn like that again, cause those are the classic images, really besides MJ (where i have become to familiar with her more current (90's to present look), all those characters, that is the perfect and classic version of them.

And ol JJJ, just the same from start to finish, he rarely can change his look at all.
