Comics Amazing Spider-Man #600 discussion thread

Oh, lots of people

knew she was coming back, but I'm saying that her return had an impact. Somewhat, honestly. Obviously, not a huge impact though.

If it wasn't spoiled by solicitations than it would have had more of an impact. :cwink:

Same goes with Lily being pregnant. Well...than again it had a twist. So that's a bad example lol.

The Bad:
Ock's actual plan wasn't impressive. Well, it was, but it never actually SEEMED that way. Ock's plot just seemed rushed and generic.
More build up would have been awesome. Maybe have Ock succeed for a few issues, get some of the public on his side because he's running things well.

The Mj issue was a HUGE disapointment, likely because I was kind of expecting answers. It might be just me, but I think milestone issues should be the FINAL chapter....not a "to be continued" story. So I was pretty disapointed with that.

2 things.
The way Dan Slott played it up was terrible.
He said Doctor Octopus was supposed to be a Doctor Doom level villain.
See what I'm saying is, while it was still a good story.
I was expecting much more.

Doc Doom is more of a "I'm better than you and I'm able to walk around looking like a total goofball and still gain respect, so much so that I can even occasionally force heroes like Captain America to protect me" kind of guy.

Doc doom has even beaten the Silver Surfer.

Ock was kind of grotesque and it only took Spider-man and the torch to defeat him. So you gotta be careful when you make huge statements like that. I think Doctor Doom's design is terrible as well. But I LOVE the character. He's great. I was hoping that for Ock because he's one of my top if not favorite Spidey bad guys....and it's been a while since he's been used very well. Alot of people don't recognize that he took Cap Stacy away from Peter. (A father figure). That's a huge loss. Especially when it affected his personal life when Gwen found out and started hating Spidey because of it.

Oh yea, and Mj was appropriately done. If your reading this without checking solicitations or hearing crap on the boards than it would have surprised you.
I do agree that they should not have made this issue a "too be continued" it should have been self contained to be more special. They've been doing this with the annuals as well, so it didn't really bother me at this point.

I think the "Ock as a major threat" was really set up with this issue...

Remember, somehow, Ock has been a joke in the Spider-Verse since Spectacular Spider-Man #79 (released in 1982), and while I felt that Ock was "threatening", he didn't come off as "over the top" as Dan Slott had us believe.

However, Ock is now out there, dying, as well as mentally deranged in that he's going to come back and do something great AND terrible... and his mental control over electronic devices DOES set him up as more of a threat than a guy with tenticles... Ock's threat level has always been his mind (and in fact, his mind is also his Achille's Heel), so if he indeed has gone over the deep end, that makes him much more threatening than ever before....

I look forward to his next appearance... probably sometime next summer.

I agree completely with carnageehw. Although i greatly enjoyed the issue, i wish it was a standalone story rather than just a setup for future stories, that seems to be marvel's thing nowadays. I just wanted a big epic battle between Spidey and Ock, was that so much to ask? I mean wouldnt that have been appropriate for #600?Still this was miles better than both Cap 600 and Hulk 600. Thor 600 is definitely the best out of the bunch. Now THAT was how you do a centennial issue.

LOL... ASM #200 is how you do a centennial issue... :word:

The issue unto itself was stand-alone-ish, but like everything that's great about Spidey, there's always going to be an element that makes you want to come back... in this case, the MJ tease as well as the Madame Web sub-plot...

And read my prior post on the future threat level of Doc Ock...

:yay:

Yep, Ock's parting words in this issue were that he was going to something really terrible next time, and he's obviously going to deal with Spidey big style because "He's always there to hinder my plans".

Like I've mentioned before, his new look, whether you love it or hate it, is only temporary. Romita Jr confirmed that:

"I was given the instructions to go creepier. It's not a permanent version of Doc Ock. It's a present version, but I don't have a problem with it because it's a good story idea. It's interesting.

So try and enjoy it for it's creepiness while it lasts.

It could have been worse. Spidey could have discovered he had grown 4 more arms in the last panel (ie: ASM #100). :cwink:

Or it could have been more self contained like the Amazing 200 issue.
I bet you tons more people appreciate that story, no? :cwink::up:

There's nothing wrong with planting seeds for future stories, look at what Thor 600 did. We had this awesome epic battle, the battle ended and the book ended with Thor being banned from Asgard. The issue felt self-contained and at the same time set up future stories. If we had just had a more complete confrontation between spidey and Ock, then this would have been a perfect centennial issue.

yeah, you do have a point there, lol. Still though, it was great
to see MJ. Can't wait for the future stories and the upcoming issue.

Yeah, that is pretty much what I was getting out of the Doc Ock thing too.

I mean that seemed Doctor Doom level to me. You had the Avengers and Fantastic Four right there ready to take care of the problem. That usually seems like a pretty huge threat to me. And Spider-Man stopped him and saved the day. Ock got away and is now more deadlier than he's ever been.

Seems Doctor Doom level to me...

Well, in terms of appearance, hopefully he won't look like the Mummy when he returns to do something "great and terrible." As terrific as his return was, that new look he had I thought just a terrible, terrible design. And as I said in my review in my post, I think even Romita Jr. hated it or otherwise he wouldn't have been so quick to reassure readers it was temporary BEFORE the issue even came out.

No sir, Doc Ock is not on Doom's level.....not yet at least. :cwink:
A more accurate comparison would be Norman Osborn.

He's definitely Doctor Doom level right now.

I'm hoping they'll get there though. He DEFINITELY has the potential.
and he's one of my absolute top favorite Spider-man villains. :yay:

It only took Spidey and the torch to beat Ock this round.
It takes more than that to beat Doctor Doom. :csad:

I'll admit that I was a tad disappointed with the "look", and I likes my Spidey/Ock battles to be more up close and dirty...

Well, that's all in the set up of making Ock a much more deadlier of a villain in the whole Marvel Universe.

As TMOB pointed out...when Ock was retreating he realized that he had underestimated Spider-Man's intellect and that Spider-Man will always be there to thwart his plans. He will have to do something bigger and more terrible.

Definitely a foreshadowing of some intensity to come!

Was i the only one who kinda felt bad for Ock? Seeing him in such a deteriorated state kinda made me feel for him. I never saw Doc Ock as an "evil" villain, he was just more of a misunderstood mad scientist who went kind of crazy every now and then. But he was never the kind of villain who went out of his way to kill random people just because he could like Dr Doom, or bulleseye or Carnage.

Yes, he was. He tried to nuke all of New York once just to prove that he was the most dangerous man alive. He tried to poison 5 million of New York's citizens using the ink in the daily Bugle's newspapers. He tried to take over the world in a couple of his Sinister Six outings.

Even in the Stan Lee days he tried this, too, like in The Master Planner story, and the Nullifier arc. Ock is quite evil, but there is also some humanity there, too. He's not your traditional moustache twirling villain. They gave him layers.

.....Oh. lol I stand corrected then. I guess i never read those stories. He just always seemed to be one of the more sympathetic villains to me.

How many times does he need to realize that??
We've seen this all before. It's even cliche with some villains.

I'm hoping they have something new and shocking in store.

I miss the days when (as joker pointed out) Ock used to do things like try to take over the world, or poison the city. I think he can go a bit farther though.

As TMOB pointed out, they've been using him as a joke for years. That's terrible.

It was nice to see Ock genuinely surprised that Spider-Man could be smarter than he is...

Wasn't too impressed with the issue, but it was a fun read.

Just read the issue. I'm just going to say my thoughts on the art. Alright, I believe JRJR did a good job, however, the color artist wasn't as efficient as his partner back in #500, not saying it's a bad thing, but I think the artist needs to learn a little more about effects in OpenCanvas. Anywho, Dan Slott probably wrote the manuscript and JRJR did not change the composition if comparing to his issues before. As you can see, everything's in a box which is good, but Spidey is a dynamic character so maybe we should see him jump out of the boxes, which is a technique to show some kind of emphasized action.

Other than that I thought it was a good chapter, and I agree, I did not want a "To Be Continued," that last part makes me think it should've been in the annual.

Aloha,
Just finished #600.I'd give the entire issue a B+.For my money, it's 200,400,600,300,100 and 500 as far as centennial issues. Don't know why some didn't like the ending to the first story, you do know that the next few issues are Red Headed Stranger! So MJ will be at the forefront of those stories. Can't believe no one noticed JJJ's change of mustache. To my recollection it's the first time he's changed that thing in HISTORY(so long Hitler look:word:).I would imagine that the last story with Madame Web is a prelude to the return of Kraven's daughter and wife(?)baby mommy:cwink:Lastly, no one should count Doc Ock out. He's a crafty fella that will find a way to return stronger than ever. If the Vulture can overcome life threatening illness, you know Doc Ock can.
Spidey rules for 600 issues and counting
