I find that makes Lex more into a cookie-cut bad guy. These days the audience are sympathetic to villains and are just as interested in them as the hero. Keeping background history a secret works well for someone like the Joker, but being able to sympathize with Lex makes Superman more interesting because it adds a different perspective of him. Besides, Lex has been made increasingly complex over the years - less plain evil, more narcissistic and politically driven. The movie should take advantage of the character development already available in the comics.
It's not 'cookie-cutter', though. That's decided in the writing in terms of his character...and it doesn't always need a clear background and/or history. I think Joker in TDK was a good example of that....the lack of 'origin' did nothing to diminish his effectiveness and originality as a film villain. And I see no reason why Luthor can't be complex, more narcissistic and politically driven while leaving the origin parts for Superman and other broader story developments.
