I really don't care if the guy with 20 nose rings and his chubby friend were in the comics. It doesn't mean they were essential to a Punisher origin movie. And replacing the New York origin with a beach in Tampa were the skull is a tie dye shirt? What classic Punisher comic was that from?

I mean I recognized the ice cream/blow torch scene from War Journal but I came away thinking why they chose that from all the great War Journal moments.

and the ice cream/blow torch scenes was done way better in the comics. Not that execution matters at all. I mean all that matters is the fact that it referenced a comic page, not whether it works well on screen. Right?

This project gets more awful with every bit of news.

Lionsgate has officially done the near impossible. They've managed to start to generate a Marvel film in which I have no desire to see. I live for Marvel films and usually support them with everything I've got. For them to alienate me, they've really hit the bottom of the barrel.

I will agree on the fact Tampa was not the best idea. You can thank a low budget for that.

They were not cheesy in Ennis book. They were only cheesy in the movie. In the movie they felt like the lame sidekicks from an animated disney movie.

Hmmm reread the first Warzone arch not long ago and didn't see how the Blowtorch sequence was done more effectively in it. As for the Neighbors being essential they aren't but at least they are elements from the comics not just some **** they threw in there. The reason they were in there is because the Welcome Back Frank story revived the characters popularity in comics. It's not like they didn't have moments from Warzone ( Blowtorch) or the best Punisher mini series ever produced Year One ( most of the end battle in the film) There are a lot of comic book films that hardly have any scenes directly lifted from the comics. As for the Tampa issue I agree on that it should have been NY but the budget didn't allow for it , it could have been worse they could have had it set in a small town at least it was in a city.

Spacker Dave and Bumpo were not Cheesy to you in the comics? They were to me but I thought that was the point Ennis used them as Comedy relief, that and a ton of dark humorous kills.

The blowtorch scene is great no matter what. They copied it almost exactly from the comics. The only reason why thats a bad thing is because it feels completely out of place in the context of the film. Yes its nice to have those moments that comic book fans can pick up on but just throwing them in with no respect for the actual flow of the story is not a good thing. The guy just had his whole family (including his in laws and great grandparents) and hes playing with popsicles??? The WBF storyline shouldn't have been used at all. Its would have been great for a seperate movie. War Zone, WBF, Y1, great stories but throwing them together in a blender is not going to make a cohesive story.

I'll be completely honest. I really liked Jane in this part, but he never struck me as Frank Castle as much as I would have liked. His acting isn't even really suited for the character. The one thing that won me over was how hard he worked and how dedicated he was. He was good to the fans too.
But he never really hit me as Frank Castle. In fact, I think Lundgren was more suited to play Castle..however horrible that might sound.
Now this Stevenson guy...the only thing that I have seen of him is that Rome clip posted in this thread...but I'll say this..He seemed scary as hell. If Punisher 2 is movieng into darker territory, he may be the right guy for the job.
It's funny, but TJ may have been better for the first film's Marvel Knights, "Welcome Back Frank" Punisher with it's dark sense of humor...but Stevenson looks like he is suited toward the MAX version of Frank which I can get on board with.
So maybe this all worked out for the best.

Also Saw was a monster right out the gate...didn't Punisher flop....I'd say them trying to get another movie done considering they probably will make barely any money off it is pretty good.

Probably just so they can keep the rights. If you think about it Lions Gate really doesn't have that many franchise properties that they can call their own, they're mostly distributors. They've pretty much lost out on Black Widow and Iron Fist. And the only franchise that they pretty much own is Saw.

Thank you Warhammer, I've been wanting to say that in almost every thread I have read today. When TJ was first announced for the role he really didn't look like The Punisher, but after he transformed into the character he did look MUCH better (though still never very intimidating). Ray Stevenson is a great actor and I loved him in Rome and the other small roles I have seen him in. I really think that once he cuts up like TJ did and gets his hair right and we see him in a promo picture people will start thinking differently. The Punisher is a great comic and has the potential to be an incredible action franchise, everyone seriously needs to chill out and just give it a chance at the least.
