I have to agree with you. I never trusted Jane because he has his own agenda. I didnt really like the Taxi driver movie that much. If anything Punisher should resemble Dead Presidents. Good choice. Im with Stevenson.


But if I would choose a director for Punisher. Hands down, the Hughes brothers.

In the comics Frank Castle is supposed to be 57. But this is a Sequel to the'04 film so that should be the issue, Stevenson is only 5 years older than Thomas Jane. Not a big deal, I just do not think he looks right for the part(looks a bit dopey and out of shape) at all and have yet to see anything that lets me know if he can act, Both in Rome and King Arthur he does action but nothing that takes much acting skill. Thomas Jane is one hell of an actor no matter what film he is in and I am pretty sure I have now seen everything he has been in and he is always good. I have a very very bad feeling about the sequel. I have a feeling that Lionsgate mainly cast him because he probably comes with a pretty cheap price tag since most of his roles have been for British TV.

Erm....really? Have you watched "Rome"? In an ensemble cast filled with great performances, he stands out as one of the best. Like this scene illustrates. WARNING: MAJOR ROME SPOILERS:

And his confrontation with Cicero is also a standout moment in the series. Ray Stevenson is a great actor, and one I'm already a fan of.

I hated the last "Punisher" hilm. Hated it. Thomas Jane's Punisher came across as a *****, and the film itself was cheesy beyond belief. When it ended, I thought "No way do I want to see part two." Well, news of this casting has got me interested again, to the point where I might end up checking it out after all.

How ironic. You defended one guy from shallow, knee-jerk reactions, yet you are in the process of having one in reaction to Ray Stevenson now.

Also...have you concluded that Ray Stevenson is "mediocre" based on an informed verdict taken from viewing his work, or is he just "mediocre" by default because he's not Tom Jane?

I remember those days.
People didn't give a damn about his acting in Layer Cake or Munich. They all acted like stupid pieces of trash just because of his look and because they couldn't comprehend change, which was stupid. (Most of) them who actually saw Casino Royale and took back their harsh criticism of Daniel Craig was like icing on the cake for me.

I am glad that you stood up for Jane. He is definitely a great actor, IMO. I don't want to start an argument between us, so I won't comment on the other stuff in your post. The only advice I can give is to not judge so quickly before we see a final product.

Since Stevenson is the Punisher now, why don't they just redo everything? Like the new hulk movie, it's not a direct sequel, it's basically a different take. It's asking you to remember the 1st hulk film, but then again, it's really not. Why don't they do that with the Punisher? Screw the previous takes and just make an ultimate Punisher film, for fans only, cause I doubt much others will go and see this. I doubt casual movie goers will remember 2004's Punisher, and if they do, there's going to be confusement since Jane isn't reprising his role. So, **** it, just go ahead and make a totally awesome driven Punisher film. Show flashbacks of him in Vietnam, of his family being randomly shot by mobsters in a park. His daughter, son, and wife dead in his arms. Hell, do it during the opening credits or something. Who cares, the fans will know what's happening. Forget the Saints, throw in Jigsaw, have him narrorate the war journals like they did in the Sin City Film, have over the top violence, dark comedy like in welcome back frank. Just go ahead and do it. Nobody will care. I have no idea how this isn't going to be straight to DVD anyway.

Hulk is a sequel, they're just going to reference the first movie very little to not at all. What with the origin done and everything they figure what matters now is just the current story. It doesn't need to be like The Dark Knight where Scarecrow is making an appearance (and with the twists they like to work in, I'm sure there will be a Ra's reference). Same thing for The Punisher. There will probably be a mention of what happened to his family or a flashback of the dead bodies and that's it. I'm okay with that.

Jane's only great movie was Thursday. He was the Punisher in that movie, but in reverse. I keep waiting for him to slice through a roll with the same grace he showed in that, but it's yet to happen. If Ray does Punisher with the same emotionless determination he had when he bit out the tongue of the rival gang leader in the Aventine of Rome, he'll be trying to escape his association with the roll for the rest of his career. He'll be defined by the Punisher.

Have you guys noticed most of the press regarding Stevenson is that he's a better choice for the role than Jane? I've never seen this guy act so I can't say either way myself. Thats another wrong with the movie. There are hundreds of movies, or at least ten that I saw watching Cinemax growing up, about a badass guys family getting killed and he has to become a one man gang to get revenge. They turned Punisher into a stale personal revenge movie, when he should have been after criminals trying to punish them for unrelated crimes. Thats much more insane and interesting. Then he could have gotten revenge on his family's killers in a sweet ass sequel. The Punisher traveling to different places in the comic doesnt mean its okay to set his origin movie as him living in an apartment in FL, especially a movie based on Welcome Back Frank, a NY story. Even Kevin didnt want to goto Florida cause its so lame they have palm trees instead of Christmas trees. FACT.

I changed my mind about this new guy. He is a briton and not the Punisher. I'm just like you now. I would kiss Tom Jane's rugged lips if I could, he is such a good Punisher. I want to smell his musky odor and thank him for his performance in a strange way. I want to sit in his lap and let him punish me, if only he would be interested.

What kind of a plot would that be if he just turned vigilante over night, then decided to hunt after his family's killers another day. Believe it or not, The Punisher came BEFORE alot of those films. The films are essentially copying off of the Punisher, not the other way around. Besides, The Punisher was an origin story. It was a revenge story, then at the end of the film, he finally became The Punisher.

No, but Jane's absence is part of the reason. The main fact is that everybody who has seemed to get a glimpse at the script(s) is reported to saying that it's not very good. I mean Jane, who seemed pretty happy with the 1st movie AND respected the character, did leave because of the script. He said himself that it wasn't a great representation of the chracter. And if He felt the first film was a good representation (I only see the true Punisher within the last 20 minutes or so of the film) does he really know the chracter at all? Or is he screwing with us like MSJ said he knew Ghost Rider? The only solution: Wait and see the film.

when i saw the story on ign, it was accompanied by this picture.

the first thing i thought was that he kinda looks like the max punisher. some of you need to get over thomas jane. i loved him as the punisher, but that movie wasn't the punisher movie i've always wanted. it wasn't as gritty as it should have been and i kinda hated the new origin. if they go for more of a hardcore max feel in this new movie, a bigger rugged guy like ray stevenson may just be the man for the part.

I agree. I meant that since I've seen similar stories on film all ready, I would have preferred if it wasnt an origin story all together. It would be far too much to show his origin and then somehow develop him into a vigilante seeking justice for everyone in one movie. They could have started it off with the Punisher being all ready established and then through expositioning (I dont know what that word means but I think it means explaining things without showing them happen) let the audience know why he does what he does.
