Assassin's Creed

No video game has really become a viable movie franchise yet IMO.

And no I'm not counting Resident Evil. I mean like a big franchise.

Lots in development. Fewer actually getting made.

Not surprised the film was put on hold again. Studio clearly can't commit to a project of this size which would require a huge budget when video game adaptations are still relatively unproven on film.

Fassbender is a busy dude that's in high demand with a lot on his plate. Can't wait around for Creed to get ready.

Its proven that a terrible movie is terrible. Video games are no different from comics or books. Take the idea and tell a good story set in the game's universe. Yet, for some bizarre reason studios are treating video games like studios used to treat comics. They want to give it very little serious effort and expect it to work. Or to go way off the rails and make the movie universe and characters nothing like the game. Studios know that you get out what you put into a project yet they keep fumbling video game adaptions like a bunch of concussed trolls.

I just dont understand why they cant see or realize that movies inspired by a game can be just as good as any other movie when done properly.

I actually think it's far more challenging than what you give them credit for. Games in the last 10 years or so have begun creating stories that are built around long narratives with in depth character exploration that can take upward of 15-20 hours to complete, making condensing into a 2 hour time frame difficult. The other question is what are you actually trying to replicate? The story or the gameplay? A comic or book is easy to do justice to because you only really need to interpret what's written on the page. With a game there are elements of immersive interaction gamers develop that have to also be taken into account. Elements that can be difficult to figure out, or sometimes just impossible to recreate in a satisfactory way in any other medium, as such something is always going to be lost in the translation more so than a book, a play, or even a TV show adaptation. That element of interaction is quite possibly the reason so many movies based off games have failed because writers don't quite know what it is they are suppose to be adapting, there's an imbalance that is difficult to fix, and that maybe why video games really aren't suited for film adaptation in the first place. Maybe we just have to be honest with ourselves in that regard, that video games are more or less an interactive form of storytelling that can't really be replicated in any other way other than in their original form.

Is this movie still able to make 2015? I haven't heard much from it in a while, been tuned into other stuff. Is Michael Fassbender still involved?

It was bumped out of 2015 earlier this year with a new release date pending. No new release date has been given yet. Pretty much this film is dead until further notice.

I feel like this is just gonna be in limbo indefinitely the same as Hardy's Splinter Cell.

Oh no, another film in developmental hell!

Because these game stories don't work as well as movie stories.

It's a shame, because Sony is sitting on a potential goldmine where they can carve out their own and first successful kind of genre blockbusters that aren't comic book movies. This is still untreaded territory. Video game films are where comic book films were in the 90's. All it takes is that one great kind of Blade or X-Men to open the door and then that could lead to their very own Spider-Man. Ironic I know!!!

This.

I think there are a lot of games that have the potential to be the next big thing. If I had to guess, it would be Uncharted which is coming out in 2016 I think. That's the most commercially viable video game property that could be turned into a successful movie imo

It's actually Fox. The title of the thread is a bit dated.

I think Ubisoft is going through a weird stage right now. Despite Farcry 4 and their smaller titles like Child of Light, the rest of their games this past year have been buggy or flat out disappointments. I think they're dealing with that right now before jumping into feature films.

In other words, they were overly ambitious.

Didnt Ubisoft make Watch Dogs?
I heard so much about is up to its release but afterward nothing.

Watch Dogs was a disappointment. Again, they were overly ambitious with that game, and didn't give themselves enough time to develop what needed to be done. The demo from two years ago looked way more advanced than the final game. It was a DRAMATIC difference (i.e. downgrade) with the graphics.

Shame

I was never overly impressed with what I saw, but I know a lot of people were

That's the thing. In the demo from two years ago, the graphics were amazing. But the final game's graphics looked really..ordinary. All of the elements that made the demo cool (like the weather effects, the debris, the lighting) were missing in the final game.

back to the topic of video game films: They just need to get and keep good talent attatched. I mean the Uncharted movie has Seth Gordon, who is a very hit or miss director.

No Ubisoft created their own Film Studio (Ubisoft Films) and partnered up with Regency as a producing partner. Fox would be only the distributor.

You need a 90's Bryan Singer or Sam Raimi. Guys who have made quality films or are up and coming talent that really respect and are passionate about the source material. These principles have never failed comic book films and it's what made them successful.

That's why Sony is lost on their own properties. I like Seth Gordon, but he's known for his comedies and one doc. Why is he the director of Uncharted is beyond me, unless he can pull a Russo Bros.

That's why there is hope: His name is Duncan Jones. Warcraft.

You also need a studio/production team that will follow the game stories. I still dont get why they have the property and then ignore the game completely.

Remember the old Uncharted story where it was going to be about a family of tresure hunters who deal out justice to art dealers or whatever...

They have gold in the palm of their hands with Uncharted. More than Gears of War, Bioshock, or any other video game property. It shouldnt be hard to not screw it up.

Also I forgot about the Ratchet and Clank movie. Ill be surprised that it doesnt turn out well for fans of the film

The thing about the Ratchet and Clank film is that it's not even being made by Sony Animation. It's being outsourced to a different company.
