Although I do agree with the spam, I like 2 better because it filters out the spammers more.

Since the votes are so high, if and when do the changes happen, Drakon?

Sorry I missed this earlier.

Yeah, the votes are pretty high, but there's still going to be the two week time period--that's only fair.

And for the record, this isn't officially going to happen. Mirko still has the final say-this is just a census he's given me permission to make.

Any option would be good. I've noticed spaming has increased, their is a user who on average claims to watch 8+ movies and 10+ tv shows a day? talk about abusing the thread.

Well, in this case, it'd go from 7-30 days to 180 days. Overall, that's a pretty steep incline.
That it is. But are avatars in general that important? I mean, if you take away or decrease my avatar for a time, it's slight annoyance, but if you take away my name (which already happens when you get banned, obviously), and I'm really pissed.

Agreed. I tried IMing you to make sure you didn't think I was just discrediting your ideas because it's the thing to do.
Any reason why you couldn't get through? I'm always available...usually. :o
Admittedly, I'm for the ideas, because I think they will really help. I'm not so much trying to make you agree with me, moreso that I want you to see why I think they will help. Making you see my logic and why I made the decision I made is infinately more important than making you agree with my decision. Admin or not, it's better to teach a man to fish than feed him once.
Oh yeah. With you (especially) I know. You always make that pretty clear.

How many, "How do I get an avatar?" threads do we get, even with the sticky in Tech, and usually within like 10 posts of the person joining? Seems the avatar's pretty important to most people...

I edited your above post--you had an open quote tag, and I closed it for ya.

To some, yes, it is. I know of one particuluar user who's been banned several times, and each time we let him back, he'd go right back to a specific avatar once he got to the level enough.

Honestly, it's either this, or start banning with an Iron Fist. And what's that gonna solve, really?

Dunno. It said you weren't online. AIM or YIM.

I try hard to. Ever since my boost over a year ago, people started listening to my suggestions because I was a staffer, not because I've been around for a while, or because I'm a friend. That honestly kinda bugs me. I even went into a thread [admittedly, yes, because there was a report], but a lot of familiar faces were there, and I wanted to join in the conversation, but, I felt less-than-welcome, and I think a good part of that is because of my red name. I'm not mentioning the thread name, but I'm sure those who frequent said thread know what I mean.

On that note? Toven, everytime she's banned goes back to her same avatar. The same avvy she had when she was Bloody Mary (earliest version I was around for), Uncle Petunia, and Holly Goodhead...

I also think mods should close unnecessary threads like "What is the last thing you did" "The last thing you ate" Seriously who actually goes in their and checks what people do? The mods should limit amount of threads with the What you did/doing/watched/looked/ate...ect threads.

Greetings. I hope you've all had a fun, safe weekend without SHH! vampiring all your time. ;)

As some of you know, while we were booted off Hype for some much-needed maintainance, a good portion of us used our exile time to visit our sister site, Coming Soon!. While there, I kind of got a bit miffed at everyone complaining "Oh, this site sucks compared to Hype!" and, in particular "I miss my avatar and siggy! Now I've gotta spam to get my post count up!" So, I made a thread, and it seems that a decent amount of you guys are somewhat in agreement with me on several ideas. I know most of you aren't even going to bother reading the entire thread once you realize it's over 200 posts, so here's my proposal to limiting some of the more blatant spam and keeping a viable reward system in place.

1--Set up a "Game/Trivia thread" for stuff like "Last thing you ate/drank/wore on your head" or "Three Word Story" that's separate from actual community. Posts in this forum will NOT count towards your post count. This will eliminate all these kind of threads for community so that we can get back to discussing "you know, the important stuff". And by, discuss, I mean pages. Not, at most, 3 posts. There are people who have at least 40-75% of their one-word posts in spammy threads like "Last thing you ate/drank/peed/pooped/wore on your head", or something similar just because they want an avatar/sig/title. I'm all for chat-chat til you're hands fall off. Hell, if you look in Games, I'm in the top 10 in terms of chat thread posters. But there's a difference between chat and crap.

2--User Join Dates will actually contribute to earning an avatar and such, in addition to post count. This way, if you're banned under your regular name, you won't be able to go back to an old name and still have avatars and such. By doing this, I hope it makes a lot of the people who like to "sit on the fence" when it comes to getting in trouble think twice, because they'd lose everything, and it'd be harder to just spam them back. This will would very well with the above idea. To quote a good friend--"The idea behind those things is that they are "privileges" or "rewards" that are meant to be earned by being a contributing member of a community over a period of time." By combining length of membership and post count as prerequisites for benefits, only members who are both active and patient would be rewarded and there would be less benefit from spamming. Also, bans would become a lot more meaningful when you not only lose a few nights worth of spamming, but you can also lose up to 6 months of your life.

Something like this order--

Code:
Signature--1 Week
Custom Title--2 Weeks and 100 posts
Small Avatar--1 Month and 300 posts
Medium Avatar--3 Month and 1000 posts
Large Avatar--6 Months and 2500 posts

With these ideas in mind, hopefully it would help keep Community feeling more like a Community rather than a collection of random people. Conversations will be able to mean more, there would be less spam to wade through, and everyone can have a little more fun. I know I'm being a little idealistic here, but that's what ideas are for--being idealistic.

Please post thoughts here, and vote. The poll will be up for two weeks.
THIS IS A MULTIPLE CHOICE POLL!!

you're talking about me aren't you. What the hell did I even do last time to get banned? :(

And once again I need an "other" option... Or better yet the choices should have been broken down a bit more.

Option 1:
A. Games Forum = good idea - however, be prepared for Community to become very quiet if this is done.

B. Doesn't add to post count = bad idea - the people who post to those "games" threads are making a contribution. It may not be one you appreciate, but it still takes them time and effort to put in their posts. They are usually not swearing, they are confining their "spam" to the proper threads, and they are having fun. Some of those "game" threads actually teach you something about the other posters (favourite foods, music they like to hear, things they care about, things that tick them off, etc.) By learning about our fellow posters we learn a little bit about society too.

Option 2:
A. "Rewards" should be based on both post count and length of stay = yes

B. Do I agree with the number of posts and the length of stay = no, I would have set the bar a little higher for both for some of the "earlier" options.

I don't like option 2......I love it!

I'm not much into little chats, but have been around forever. In other words.......Gimme my big avatar!!!! Just kidding. I'm fine with my teeny, tiny itty, bitty avatar.

Option 1 is too arbitrary for me to agree to. If there is a seperate community games forum that's fine by me. Affecting people's post counts and saying that posting in the games forum is less valuable to the board than some of the other crap that gets posted isn't right.

Option 2 is long overdue.

I didn't vote on option 1 because I could really care less (seeing as how I don't visit the Community Forum often).

I voted yes on option 2. However, I do have one thing I'd like to see: the 20kb limit on 50x50 avys raised to at least 30kb. It's an uber pain in the a$$ trying to do decent animated GIFs for people when you've only got 20kb to work with.

I approve of both options.

Despite the fact that I myself have used the game threads to up my post count in the past, namely to gain a medium avatar, I think it's better they don't count toward post counts, and that they're given their own separate forum.

This way, the community forum will be filled with threads which actually promote discussion rather than flooded with threads which promote one word answers. For those who genuinely like the game threads, they're still going to be around. For those who are just using them, then hey, they're going to have to be a little more productive to earn their posts.

That said, there is a danger that in removing the post count inclusion in this threads, members will just spam elsewhere, polluting threads that might normally have escaped.

I agree with the time limits too. I think maybe the upper limit should be a year rather than 6 months however.

I've never been a spammer or silly-one-word-game poster, so both # 1 and #2 work for me.

Ideally, yes. But that's not always the case. With a site this big you've really got to watch yourself when it comes to moderation. You add too many at once, and you're gonna have people with sore feet, cause a lot of toes will be stepped on. That's why I keep worrying about my admin boost. The last time someone was boosted to admin was 2001, and that was Dew. I know that they wouldn't have given me admin without trusting me with the "keys", so to speak. But at the same time, I know I've got a lot of ideas and vision for the forums, [and even the site], and I don't want to step on any toes, what with me being the new guy and all.

You don't need to worry about that in my opinion. :)

Oh, so the only Real higher up is Mirko then? :p

I like both options. The spamming really needs to stop and be controlled. Hack and Slash a user here has 6000 posts in less than a month? WTF? You have to earn your avvys not spam your way to them. :o
