There's no reason for a character with The Riddler's gimmick and attributes to be played in such a manic way, especially when The Joker is a much bigger character and it's just going to draw negative comparisons.

Carrey's performance is based almost entirely on Gorshin's, which is to this day the most iconic portrayal of the character.

You prefer a less manic take, so do I. I want something akin to the Arkham games. But I'm just saying, the character has evolved a lot since '95, and Carrey's take on it was in keeping with the character and wasn't inaccurate or invalid, despite being a little goofier than necessary.

That's fair I suppose. I just feel like the character makes more sense as a dry, sarcastic, and calculating individual. It's less a knock on Carrey and more creators who made the character appear that way over the years and making him an inferior character and not separating him enough from Joker.

I agree, the next cinematic interpretation should definitely try to make Riddler as distinct from Joker as possible. It's funny, I honestly think that Eisenberg and Leto would've both been better as Riddler than the villains they were cast as.

Back to Bruce though. Jake Gyllenhaal should definitely get the part.

I'd LOVE to see his old screen test from the Begins days. It was down to Bale and Gyllenhaal back then, and Gyllenhaal's gotten so much better since '04. I really think he's the absolute perfect choice.

DC needs to offer bale 50 million to come back or i will take a CGI michael keeton *shrugs*

I am really digging Jake Gyllenhaal as Bruce the more I've thought about it. That manip by Boss Logic really gave me some Michael Keaton vibes too.

I'd love if Matt Reeves is cooking up a long arch Batman trilogy. One where he may run into the likes of clay face, freeze, ivy, two face, riddler, joker, talia al ghul, hush, the court or something all on the way to the big bad.
Make it long halloween-esque, or moreso like volume 2 of the current all star Batman comic.

I remember when Batman Forever came out, there was this rather excellent one shot about the Riddler where he would broadcast this pirate game show where he exposed people’s deep dark secrets on the air, inflicting serious damage on their personal lives. One victim ends up killing themselves. The Riddler is portrayed as cruel, sadistic and sociopathic.

I’d love to see THAT Riddler show up in a film.

pathetic / weasley riddler only

I'd be cool with both. A Riddler that appears confident at first and only gets more and more pathetic and weasley as the story progresses and Batman foils him more and more.

On one hand, I'm pulling for Oscar Isaac and would be completely cool with Gyllenhaal, but on the other, it'd be kind of interesting if Reeves pulled a fast one on us and went with someone as unknown now as Hugh Jackman was when he took on Wolverine.

I really think NPH would be perfect as a weasley Riddler

I think Gone Girl proved that he's capable of serious roles outside of comedy.

Still repping Jake Johnson as my left-field Keaton-esque choice.

Issac would be brilliant but I just don't see it happening. My honest opinion is he's the best name I've seen suggested by anyone since the recasting conversation started.

I don't see Oscar Issac as Batman at all. I like the actor a lot, but no.

I haven't seen anyone that hits you in the face with how perfect they are like Bale as Batman or Cavil as Superman. I just feel like Issac could convey all the personality traits I like in my Batman.

Isaac is an interesting suggestion but they are going to need to do better camera work than Singer did in X-Men so that he looks big and imposing.

So I have a question.

Steve Weintraub said that they are still very early in the development of this film. He emphasized the "very early" part. Isn't it a bit odd for a director to make meetings from multiple actors if they don't even have a script in place?

I'm honestly not sure what and what not to trust when it comes to Frosty's comments. I got the sense he was doing a bit of damage control for Warner Bros by trying to make an argument that Affleck might still be in the role for now.

At the same time, I do buy that Reeves is generally still early in developing the film. He only started working on it back in July or August after finally finishing work on War. What that means exactly though, I'm not sure.

As for the script question, Reeves might have a draft of the script already. It just probably isn't the final draft and might still be a work in process. Likewise, he might just have a full treatment for the film right now. No one knows for sure at this point. But my guess is that Reeves at least has a general idea of what he wants the specific story to be and how he wants to go about portraying Bruce as a character in the film. He's probably got enough to talk in depth with Gyllenhaal or any of the other actors he's reportedly met with about the role.
