2) Any movie that makes between $700 million and $1 billion can't reasonably called a failure. It might have a smaller profit margin because of an inflated budget, but more people went to see this movie than many other superhero movies, and any way you look at it that's a lot of money.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple. By this logic, Spider-man 3 wasn't a failure. It made 890 million dollars world wide, in a time when a billion dollar Superhero film was unheard of. But it was still considered a failure.

It's not as cut and dry as making a profit or not. And even from that standpoint, WB is in trouble, since this probably will barely break even for them during it's BO run. That's not good.

And then there are all the other aspects that go into this. First, it's expectations. WB expected to hit a billion at least with this film. They didn't. That's not good. Second, it's about setting up a brand that will last and continue to generate revenue. But the poor critical reception, combined with the lukewarm audience response and how hard this has dropped after it's opening weekend make the future films based on this universe much more shaky.

So given everything WB was trying to do with this film...it certainly wasn't a success.

Only would be stretching it, but for the interim the move makes sense. Smaller pics can and are made in large part to the success of blockbusters. Studios can afford to take more risks because of their surplus.

WBs past 18 months have been dreadful to say the least, so I'm not surprised by this new tactic. Once they've lined up a couple of runaway hits I've no doubt they can start moving back to the director-friendly studio they've made a name of themselves for.

Putting most of their eggs in the tent pole basket sounds treacherous. Marvel did it because they had to. WB doesn't have to. The choice to do that in hopes of greater BO returns feels silly.

My 'Knightmare Vision' here is WB ends up bankrupting themselves with this whole endeavor and then gets bought out by Disney, effectively creating a monopoly on blockbusters in Hollywood.

With DC's luck, they'll be bought by FOX and they're back in Robinov's clutches...

Anyway... So we are expecting somewhere around 850 million?

I know they'd probably do a great job, as they have with Marvel and Star Wars (so far)...

Just....Batman being under the Mouse Empire. I can't do it. Can't do it, it's just not right. Not right, I tell ya.

WB/DC needs to climb out of their own pit here. *Cue the chant*

Is Civil War reaction going to affect things? It's 3 weeks away but if early reviews are stellar people might save their money until then.

Definitely a possibility. Very very few people are in a rush to see a movie three weeks after it comes out if they haven't bothered to see it yet. Especially with Jungle Book and CW coming out

I'm still in shock that this thing is freefalling so fast. Early buzz on Jungle Book is good. Civil War will be huge.

Honestly, I'm not the world's biggest fan of this film but I still would've liked to see it perform better and get some excitement going for the DC Universe. Marvel deserves to have some true competition. The fans win when that happens. See: the WWF/WCW Monday Night Wars.

WCW effectively died shortly after those events. Sure you want to go with that comparison?

Maybe not the best comparison, lol. But the spirit of those times, when both companies were firing on all creative cylinders is what I'm getting at here. If WCW hadn't been run so abysmally, who knows what would've happened?

I get where you're at. I distinctly remember constantly switching back and forth during commercial breaks. It didn't register at the time, but wrestling fans were most definitely spoiled for a good few years.

A shame it doesn't look like it'll translate to the CBM genre for the foreseeable future. Marvel is only competing with themselves.

Civil War reviews are coming in, from critics, looks like it's going to be big.

Luckily Marvel is like that child prodigy who keeps laying golden eggs.

On a more serious note, there are many reasons why Marvel is so good at what they do. They're like The New England Patriots in terms of how their system leads to constant, sustained excellence.

Tbh I don't think competition even matters to Marvel right now. Unlike Sony or especially WB, who are so incredibly fickle and lost that they seem to change plans every week (Deadpool doing great? We have an R rated cut! BvS too dark? We're reshooting SS to make it funnier!), Marvel actually has a vision, a plan, and a system to make it all happen. They just do their own thing, and most are loving it.

WB being bought out by Fox or Disney??!?!?! Whaaaaa? Sure that isn't a fan-fic idea? Sounds like one. That ain't going to happen just because of one film.

Well fox tried to buy them last year but got blocked. That scenario is surely in play for future depending on stock price.

I think in many ways, Marvel's survivor instincts are serving them greatly right now. Before MCU, Marvel was near bankruptcy and had to sell off many of their most lucrative movie properties like Spider-Man and X-Men to stay alive, and when they tried to launch their own brand of movies they had to borrow a loan from Merrill Lynch in order to finance their movies. That's why they learned to keep the costs down and make movies that people want to see, because if they don't they won't have been able to paid off the loan and they might really go bankrupt for good.

Marvel made their movies because they had to, and because of MCU's success they were purchased by Disney for 4 billion. DC, on the other hand, has always been in the safety net of WB, and making superhero movies has never been WB's top priority until after the success of The Avengers. This is why Marvel is doing better than DC right now.

It's similar to why Deadpool succeeded. It was handicapped with so many constraints but the team worked the hardest they could to achieve the best result.

Man, Lee is gonna come on and just bomb this thread. Like just drop a nuke on the last 4 or 5 pages.

My prediction is the right one ladies and gentleman. No bias, just pure divination. 912 mil... exactly. I need you all to know thats my number so when it happens you know who to worship.

LOL. I hope you're not a betting man.

If I would be so bold, my prediction for an exact number is $833M worldwide ($333 domestic, 500 international)

I KNOW you ain' talking about the Lee comment.

daddy's on point 50% of the time, but I'm all in on making it 2 fer 2. So now I'm calling a fat finger and it's 812 mil... exactly.

This is the BATMAN V SUPERMAN BOX OFFICE THREAD....

That means you discuss the Box Office results and predictions for the movie BATMAN V SUPERMAN....it DOES NOT MEAN you discuss if DC movies are better than Marvel movies....it DOES NOT MEAN you discuss what WB plans to do next....it DOES NOT MEAN you discuss the good and or bad points of the BATMAN V SUPERMAN movie....it means you discuss the BOX OFFICE FOR THE MOVIE BATMAN V SUPERMAN

"The fate of DC's most beloved heroes rests at the feet of its most vile villains"

I swear, following this release was WAY more fun than I ever expected

Same here brother.

This is greater than simply watching history unfold.
I feel like we were not mere watchers, but participants.

We invested our money and wide-eyed fandom to witness it for ourselves.
Only to swallow that jagged pill.
That is, our expectations being dashed to pieces against the stones of dissonance.

The degrees of such:

We the People, wanted to see: Hope. Heroism. Heart. Humanity.

We received, like scraps, discarded upon our outstretched arms -
something Distorted. Arcane. Crestfallen countenances. Apathy.

We needed to make sense of this tragedy.
To salvage something of substance from its ashes.
Something valuable.

We found it in this forum.
Financial forecasting. Friendships. Fraternity.
Foolish foes who fought us with fantasy - were flattened by facts.

Avarice. Is what the Brothers Warner wanted.

Justice. Is what they received.

More like SEGA and Nintendo in the 90s.

It's funny that bvs is a considered a flop but it's not a flop. It will make $1 billion. MOS made only $668 million in 14 weeks and BvS has already made $723 million in 2 weeks.
