2) Any movie that makes between $700 million and $1 billion can't reasonably called a failure. It might have a smaller profit margin because of an inflated budget, but more people went to see this movie than many other superhero movies, and any way you look at it that's a lot of money.
Unfortunately, it's not that simple. By this logic, Spider-man 3 wasn't a failure. It made 890 million dollars world wide, in a time when a billion dollar Superhero film was unheard of. But it was still considered a failure.
It's not as cut and dry as making a profit or not. And even from that standpoint, WB is in trouble, since this probably will barely break even for them during it's BO run. That's not good.
And then there are all the other aspects that go into this. First, it's expectations. WB expected to hit a billion at least with this film. They didn't. That's not good. Second, it's about setting up a brand that will last and continue to generate revenue. But the poor critical reception, combined with the lukewarm audience response and how hard this has dropped after it's opening weekend make the future films based on this universe much more shaky.
So given everything WB was trying to do with this film...it certainly wasn't a success.
